I buy the smaller cans around the corner from me at the Greek deli. It is made up the road from me in Escalon. Perhaps I should buy all he has!

Yep, freeze 'em! I get them in those whoppin' big cans from my caterer friend, put them in smaller freezer containers and stash them in the fridge.

I got my first order a couple of years ago through Escalon.

Thanks for verifying that Jessy. I ordered an extra case yesterday to take to my Italian grocery store who insisted that they weren't making them any more.

So, Escalon answers your phone call placed today (where did you get the number, it's not on the "contact us" page on their web site?) but they have yet to answer the email I sent last Wednesday.

Off to order a case or two, even if that did just piÃÂ me off a bit.

FOAS, somehow I found it on a business profile website. And it took me three phone calls to get a live body - the first two went to a voice mail.

I just received my order of 40 cans of 6 in 1 tomatoes from Escalon! The price was extremely resonable...less than I would have paid in the Italian market. 40 cans that are 1 lb, 12 oz. cost $66, including the shipping. Now that Progresso doesn't make tomato products, this will be the only way I can get the goods I need.

Eileen, how did you manage that...$1.65 a can? When I put a quantity of 40 into the order form, the price came up $100, or $2.50 per can. That was before factoring in any shipping costs--unless that's included in the price per can.

Yes, that's what I was wondering too. How did you get such a cheap price? I get the same hundred dollar price that ci lantro gets. For $1.65 a can, even old cheap me would buy them.

I got an email from Amazon advising me that the 28 oz cans are now available. I guess all is okay.

They called before the order shipped and let me know that if I ordered more, the price went down to something like $1.63 per can and the shipping would stay the same which was still $6. I wish I knew how to post pictures here because I have the boxes, still with the cans inside them, in the garage. I also ordered from Amazon last night. I'll have to check out the price I paid..it wasn't as good as Escolon, but I ordered some anyway. We can't get tomato puree here in Phoenix any longer, unless it's the store brand. No more Progresso, Red Pack or any of the brands. If we go to an Italian speciality store, the price is out of this world!

I like my institutional cans of Red Gold. It might seem hard to use them up but I've never thrown any out. Not the best tomato year going... I may be buying store bought tomatoes next spring.

I still have a quart or two of home-canned tomatoes from 2009 plus all that I canned in 2010. Most of my plants got some kind of late blight this year but I managed to can over 48 pints of salsa. We've not yet had a hard freeze so I'll still prolly get a few quarts of toms & sauce from this crop.

That said, I'd like to try the 6-1 toms just to see what all the hoopla is about.

The hoopla is that they taste as good as one's canned homegrown tomatoes. At least I think so.

I like that they are vine ripened and don't have citric acid. I don't like 'sour'. These are so good and almost sweet, with no 'canned' taste, that I find it hard not to grab a spoon to eat right out of the can.

Amazon order is 8 cans for $16.91. Not as good as a deal, but I'm trying to stock up because we can't get anything but store brands for making sauce.

Eileen - Sounds like you lucked out. They said no bulk discounts, and my order is only 24 for that 60+6. Still competetive with better brands here so I'm ok with it.

By the way, are you sure you ordered direct from Escalon? They seemed to doubt it when I mentioned your order, because they only ship in multiples of three, and there are 24 cans to a case. Neither of which works into 40 evenly.

I ordered 6 - 28oz cans directly from Escalon. They came in an Escalon marked box the specific size for 6 cans; so they have the packaging for 6 cans.

Which is evenly divisible by three. Per the web site, and what I was told over the phone, "NOTE: Total quantity must be a multiple of 3." Now I see on Amazon they're packaging them in 8, so I'm not doubting that Eileen bought 40, I'm just questioning from whom she bought them. If not from Escalon directly, I'd love to have the name for future orders. She paid a lot less than I did.

So they only come ground? I usually buy whole or diced canned tomatoes.

I really like 6in1 too, and found it thanks to a recommendation on this board. Fortunately I can buy it at two local stores. In my experience the product freezes well, as was mentioned.

There is no sharpness from citric acid, and I have to think the vine-ripening also adds to the good flavor.
