Could use some uses for cookie tins with lids...

...before I toss them. I have a number of them and use quite a few at Christmas time for cookies my DD and I bake each year. But found extras. Thought I would look for ideas for ways to use them before I toss them or give them away.

When my kids were small I use to use them for crayons, pencils, hair supplies, pony tails, etc.

They make great gift wrappings. If their decoration doesn't fit the occasion there's always spray paint.

Screw the bottoms into a wall (the stud preferably) with two screws so they won't turn and use them for storing season packettes or other small items in your pantry.

If you have a number of them the same size you can make one of those funny looking footstools that coffee cans used to be used to make.

Store Leggos or other small toy parts in them.

Fill them with sand and cover the outside with fabric and use them as a doorstop.

Use one to hold a first aide kit in to keep at home or in your vehicle.

If you have a very pretty one you can add cabinet knobs for feet to the bottoms and one to the center of the top for a handle. If it's not so pretty you can cover it with fabric and trim to make it pretty.

lol ya'll:D i looked all over for a church key type can opener...Hoss even went shopping for one for me. finally.....one of his buddy's said he had something.....omg i need one of these...it's a larger type church key, on the end of a BBQ fork. so i borrowed it and commenced punching holes in all the ones i'm making feeders out of....and i even took apart the ones i already made, and redid them if i could. oh i remember the aluminum sprinkler cap on the soda bottle. and...we had this huge piece of child-eating machinery called an "ironer"..about as big as a chest freezer. i can remember ironing my dads dress shirts in it when i was so young i had to stand on the kitchen step-stool! and the wringer washer.......my twin and i had to hold each other up to run the clothes through the wringer on the back porch, then carry the basket out to the line to hang them :D what an ordeal! and i don't know if it was just my household, but how did we manage to survive childhood with so many things that shocked the #*@! out of us:D plugging the iron in, our metal play oven..with sharp edges :D...touching the handle of the freezer .....lol kudzu i'll probably make a tutorial for these for next week. happy yard sales! kudzu

The boiling water process is very necessary for the safety of jams and jelly. It helps to kill off any bacteria that may be left in a jar, or lid. The lids are never boiled prior to placing on the hot filled jars, so they could carry a possible bad thing if they were not heat treated by the boiling water batch. The amount of sugar and REGULAR pectin is VERY critical and can cause a poor set if the sugar isn't sufficient enough or the pectin isnt enough or is too old. I would suggest using the Pomona pectin as its much more stable, and can give very reliable results without any concern about the sugar. Its especially useful for those who have never made jellies or jams before, and need 100% positive results. The lemon juice mentioned, doesn't state the amount either, so there, you could add enough to taste. With pleanty of added acid like BOTTLED lemon juice or citric acid, the product can usually keep for well over a month in the fridge, once opened. If you have a lot more figs than the 4 cups, you could also make a larger batch with Pomona pectin as it will set with the added calcium as opposed to sugar. LOTS of sugar in a jelly or jam will help keep it from spoiling once its opened and refrigerated. Figs, usuaully have a lot of natural sugar, so they are needing an acid to enhance their flavor as well as safety. The canning jar size would be 8 ounce. I use pints for my stuff when using Pomona and have put up about 15 pints of jelly using a whole box of the Pomona pectin. I use a 10 minute BWB for pints. Fig jam is quite simple, and you have found a decent and basic recipe. For me, it would be some fig squares I would make from my brown turkey figs. This year, all my figs were lost due to my long stay in the hospital, and the tree getting too dry in its big pot.

Biggest advantage of watering from below is being able to keep the tops from getting as soggy, where mold/fungus/gnats are more likely to be a problem. But some people prefer to water from the top. It can certainly be done, although if you do, it needs to be done with something that's more of a drip spout rather than a wider pour spout, or else you may wash your seeds out. Most of your seeds will just go 1/4" deep in rather loose, fluffy seed-start soil that's disturbed pretty easily with much water force. You just need to play with it some. But I think you'll find when using the standard thin 6-cell packs, it gets pretty easy to tell when they dry out. Even if you choose to water an entire 10x20" tray (72 cells) at once rather than pulling each of the 12 6-packs out and dipping them individually like I do, you'll figure out the approximate watering balance before long. Just give the tray maybe 1/2" of water. All or most should get absorbed within 5 minutes or so. It may take another 10 minutes for it to creep up to the tops of the cells, and you'll see those turn darker in most spots, but with maybe some light (dry) edges still. That's good. If it all turns really dark, and almost shiny, you've probably overwatered and made it soggy. You don't want the trays actually sitting in water for more than a few minutes, otherwise they will sop up too much water. Better to add less and see if it all absorbs than add too much at once and find you've saturated the cells and made them soggy. You can always add more if it looks like it needs more. I water roughly every 2nd or 3rd day. If you have a fan gently blowing on it, then a bit more frequently. Don't sweat the details, because it varies and there's a lot of different ways that work. Just need to start some and play with it, even if you end up discarding it as a test. One of those little $1 12-cell trays would be perfect for testing on. It's really not as difficult as I'm probably making it sound.

Thank you dd50 and justgotabme ! So many good ideas, I am glad I held onto them.

jgbm...tell me more about the footstool if you can also I like your idea about spraying them or covering with fabric.

I have a very large can from popcorn...it works out great to store my birdseeds in outdoors!

My DH used one to make an air filter for the riding lawn mower he turned into a model sailplane winch, but I guess that's not what you had in mind. LOL

First I want to add a kudo's to iread's hubby's inovative use for a cookie tin! Amazing!

Funny how I thought you'd think that was the dumbest idea I had and debated whether to add it or not. I found a picture of a fancier one than I'd ever seen in person that I found on etsy so you have an idea what they look like when you read the article that had no pictures. I thought for sure I'd find some crafty website that offered detailed instructions with pictures, but I had no such luck.

iread...don't think I would have a use for one like that, but who knows DH might! I can suggest it if he ever needs an air filter! He'll think I am soooo bright! The things I learn on this forum! Thank you both!

Isn't that just the cutest thing? The ones I've seen are quite different though the main idea the same using seven coffee cans. One in the middle with six around it like a flower.

I've seen people use them to display family photos (unfortunately I don't have a picture to contribute). Basically, they take family photos, copy them (color or B&W), then adhere the photos to the tin lids with spray adhesive. The screw the base of the tins to the wall and securely attach the photo lids. It was a very cute, innovative way to use the tins (and old gift boxes) to showcase photos of family and friends.
