Are you feeding finches?

We've always had finches here--goldfinches, purple finches, sparrows--and I used to buy niger (nyger) seed to mix with the black oil sunflower seeds that were our main bird entree. This year I read that finches like the black oil seed just as much as the niger, so I decided to save myself some money and feed just the black oil, along with suet, plus cracked corn on the ground for the doves and blue jays (and occasionally turkeys).

Well, we are overrun with goldfinches! I haven't seen a single purple finch, or even a sparrow, but I've never seen so many goldfinches in my life. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the change in feed, or if if it would have happened anyway.

They're quite tame, BTW. Just like the chickadees--I can walk right up to them.

What's up with your finches?

Susan
