Bed & Breakfast color scheme?

I'm fascinated by the color scheme of this B & B. If you 1st click on to "Accomodations" then click on to Public Areas (the 1st pic) & "go to room," you will see a sitting area with very deep gold walls, & rugs & pillows with lots of rose & blue. Next room over is flaming orange. It really should look dreadful, but it looks pretty good!

It's an "anything goes" approach to color, as if they said, "Well, we have these blue & rose pillows & rug & art, & this gold paint was on sale, & someone gave us this orange stuff, so hey, let's use it!"

We fret so much over getting it all right, & then I see people in the business of creating a welcoming atmosphere throwing all caution to the wind. Any thoughts?

I just painted a room that flaming orange color, and to my surprise, it looks good with a variety of colors.

But in looking carefully at those beautiful room photos, it's not so random as you think. You can see it's actually an analogous color scheme that's going on there: red, orange, yellow in the guise of rose, flame, copper, & golds. There is the fabulous white woodwork & decor style to help tie it all together, and bits of blue & green here & there to provide punch. What a delight to look at -- thanks for the lovely eye candy, stinky_g!

I love the way people take a chance and get it right. Savannah knows how to do it right. I love that town with all it's fabulous townhouses and squares.

There is no way in hell I would even consider painting walls in a house I had never lived in.....and even without my furniture in place. The sun in the morning and the sun in the evening....what reflects off a garage a fence or a neighbor's house how your beloved hutch looks all affect the colors and tones of the paint and finishes I would consider. Colors look very different at night then they do on a sunny day and walls look different in an empty room than in the same room with furniture. Tell your friend to move in before he begins to select paints and finishes. I know it's a pain to move out of a room to refinish it....but I believe he will be happier in the long run. I have seen too many people who had to choose the colors and finishings in a new house, repainting in 3 months because the color was too dark or looked like white in the day time or because with the tile the walls look wrong and it's easier to paint than re-tile. It's fun to plan new finishes....but don't do more than fix a leaky faucet until you have been in the house for a while. Our first house was brand new plaster on lathe and we were told not to paint for at least 6 months to allow the plaster to fully cure. By the time the 6 months was over, I was so sick of all the white walls, I painted the living/dining area something like harvest wheat.....which was like dark mustard when all the walls were that color! I could hardly wait until the paint was dry to re do it!...But I was over reacting to 6 months without color!

KSWL, I am using FnB lime white on the interior trim (except for the ceiling). I will try that just for comparison, I hope it wont look like a near miss. Here is the Hampshire Grey test: We need to get new garage doors anyway, which will be a whole nother post someday. Kitchy, I don't think it read as a whole. But I would not do ALL exterior doors in HG. We have a oddly pourous house. We have a double front door and then a front to back hallway with a back door (that is the one I might paint HG, but it has very little wood so I'm not sure, to wit:) But if we did all exterior doors... there are double french doors all the way around the pool building, and another set to the greenhouse. There are double french doors from the DR to the back patio. Then there is a single french door to the side, one to the garage, one from the LR to an interior courtyard, from the LR to back patio, from the side to the mudroom, from a powder room that connects to the pool, and I think I still forgot some. Oh yes graage doors on our little "barn" and on our garage. The only ones in the running are the back door to the center entry hall, and barn and garage doors. You can't see the stonehouse from the main house, except maybe from the pool when the leaves are bare. Even then not really. And the only place you see it when you are walking the far side of the pond (below, the stonehouse is all the way to the left, where the ladder is)..

what color scheme and style rug to go with bed?

I am looking at this bed (looks different colors but it’s cream) and included are pictures of the color flooring previous owners installed, which are staying. Wall color will be selected after rug to coordinate and have no bedding/linens yet. I would like blues and creams mixed with another color. Not sure on if to go with something textured, busy/no busy pattern, style etc. Any guidance is appreciated. If you keep going, there is another shot of the same "flaming orange" room, although the sun is not hitting it and it is very subdued, almost a clay color, but still gorgeous!

What a gorgeous place! It's a perfect combination of exquisite taste and the money needed to make it all work. There's such richness there but never overdone. These rooms are going in my permanent file. Thanks so much for this beautiful treat!

I appreciate the thoughts shared here, as I want to more fully comprehend why this relatively haphazard color scheme still works. The designers of these rooms are probably "trust your gut" people, where as I want to understand WHY something works & why something else doesn't, & would preferably like to have a "rule" to guide me!

Awm03, I saw what I would call your "Pumpkin-Pie Room" & think it is beautiful. The palette of your whole house is very harmonious. So the B&B has an "analagous color scheme?" I like being introduced to concrete terms like that. I'm here to learn!

Newdawn, yes, isn't Savannah an inspiring city? (& Charleston, in a less idiosyncratic, more traditional way.)

Kmcg, queen of coordination, yes, I saw that pic, but didn't realize until you pointed it out that it was the orange room! It looks so different in that lighting. In the 2nd pic it reminds me of a Martha Stewart paint color called Pinecone that I love.

Hi Amy! That's cute! Well, since you asked...

I don't have a good imagination, so I bought an inexpensive software package at Lowe's that lets you download your own photos & do a very crude photoshop with the particular paints sold at the store. I tried the ones that were close to Silver Sage & wasn't crazy about them. I tried many others. Long story short, I didn't like anything as much as the "queen," except for medium to dark beiges, taupes & browns. However,while the ivory curtains & chairs would pop & a dramatic effect would be created in the LR painted brown, all my wood furnishings in the DR would be lost & the effect would be dull & drab.

I did the exercise you suggested too. I'm very fond of the pink at night as it turns into a "non-color" & just sort of glows & feels very warm, soft & neutral, but somehow has a little excitement. In the day it just feels very muted & not so exciting.

I really love the drama & impact of the B & B rooms. Understated is good, but I also appreciate a little "wow" factor, & don't know how to achieve that with this palette. Reds & golds like my den colors are so much easier to make a statement with!
