mounting ceiling fans in old house bedrooms

I am wishing to install ceiling fans in the upstairs bedroom of my 1920s home. I will be replacing existing light fixtures with the fans that include light kits.

My question is if I really need to reinforce the boxes somehow. the instructions say there needs to be a cross-brace or something up there with the electrical box screwed into it. Yikes! I'm sure new homes are build that way from the beginning, but I doubt my old home would have that.

I do have limited and difficult access to the attic, but would like to avoid going up there unless neccessary. there is a thick layer of blown-in insulation everywhere. I don't know if it contains asbestos or not so would like not to disturb it.

Any experience with this or suggestions? A contractor wants to charge $150 per fan to install them. That's more than the fans were.

Thanks for any help you can give.
