appeal to the police station

Today my postman brought 3 appeals to the police station -for me,for my sister and for my brother.I was totally suprised (cuz I know nothing and I am innocent :D )what it can be.We have to go as a witnesses in drugs's case.I know that ex-friend of my brother (they don't have a contact since some time)has a problems with drugs,as I heard we was a dealer and he is in jail now.But what police want from me and my sister??? I'm little worried cuz it's really strange for me.I can understand that they wanna ask my brother about this case(cuz they were friends)but that boy had never been my friend,nor my sister,so ?? anybody knows what it can be?

Man, this sounds awful. If it was me, I'd take the papers to the office of a lawyer who handles criminal cases. Ask the lawyer to help you figure this out. Sounds like you're not actually charged with a crime, they just want you as a witness. Sorry. I don't know much.

yeap I know that I am just a witness (on paper),but what can I say if I don't know him? that is the only thing which I can't understand,I didn't meet with him and I've never had his phone number.I wrote here cuz maybe someone had similar situation:)

I had the same problem. jdbillp made a nice list except he forgot the Volvo station wagons. We went with a used Subaru outback and we LOVE it. volvo was a bit too expensive and VW actually didn't have that good a rating (for used) the outback had a high safety rating and high reliability, which is why we chose it. In addition we have ALOT of snow here and found that the all wheel drive does come in handy. We are thinking about buying our second one, which would be the smaller wagon outback (impreza outback). it is a little shorter than the legacy outback. Anyways, we have two dogs and we love being able to put them in the back for long trips and we still have room in the back seat for our stuff. One thing I have heard about the older outbacks is that if you are taller you may not like them. I am shorter and the outback fits me perfectly. My bestfriend's husband is almost 6 ft and he can't stand driving them. I have heard the 2006 outbacks have more legroom now. Mileage is ok. It isn't any worse than my 10 yr old pontiac grand am V6. However we are thinking of buying the impreza to take place of the pontiac, which hardly runs anymore and we will use the impreza to commute to work. We rarely use the full sized outback to commute. We just don't need something that big for everyday use. It also has a V6 so we can tow easily however this does mean it uses more gas. -renee -renee

Again, I have no idea how your police and court system work compared to ours but taking the phone number here is very common. If you're interviewed for anything, they'll ask a phone number, address and usually Social Security number. It goes into the report (here I mean) and they have your number if they need to contact you. In this country they can tap your phone most anytime. It's easy for our police to get someone's phone number. These days you have to be careful what you say. With the "Patriot Act" the invasions here are many. But even joking about growing weed in a basement at worst would get a search. If you don't have it, there's no problem if they do. And here they would need a warrant, which isn't hard to get or your permission. I hope you can relax a bit more now. Hope you're having a great week! Oh and thanks for the update!

Before you go critizing Jannie for her lack of responsibility for not planning ahead, try walking a mile in her shoes. See how you would feel with the poisons in your body that the kidneys automatically excrete. I don't know her circumstances but her husband may be handicapped, her daughter may not live near her....we don't know. How many neighbours would be up in the middle of the night and would be willing to shovel her out when she has to be at dialysis so early? Are there even neighbour's around her? Now how does one know in advance that there is going to be a snow storm so severe that you can't get out of your driveway because the snowplow has totally blocked you in? You may go to bed at night knowing it will snow during the night but it is anyone's guess how accurate weather forecasters are, how much snow there will be. Areas in the States that aren't used to snow have been bombarded with snow this year. Would Jannie even be well enough to shovel the snow feeling poorly needing dialysis? Where I live, police don't automatically come for rescue calls. You explain the circumstances to the 911 operator and they decide who is the best people to dispatch. If it is not an emergency you just call the police station/fire station which Jannie did. How was she to know in advance that the three taxi cabs she tried and the ambulette service wouldn't take her? She exhausted all of her options first. The police man could have been more help. If he wasn't called out on an emergency it wouldn't have killed him to offer some assistance. It would have been better helping Jannie, than spending time in a coffee shop or just sitting in his car waiting for a call. There are lots of times on a policeman's shift where they aren't doing anything. Yes policemen work hard, when they work, but they do have down times on their shifts as well. Since there are three taxi services where Jannie lives there would be a fair number of policemen as well. Jannie pays taxes and this was a one time emergency and not one that is a habit. Talking to the police chief at least sets a standard in case such a situation should arise with anyone in the future. It does not mean that it will go down on anyone's record. It would be interesting to know what was actually decided by the police chief, if a policy is now in place to help out in situations like this.

I live where the the department is so corrupt I can't bring myself to call them officers. First hand knowledge. Kudos to the good police officers who take their duty to serve and protect seriously but not in my town. I'm sure some will say but "they can't be all be bad". To that I say as long as they protect the bad apples amongst them they are just as culpable as if they did the misdeeds themselves.

An "appeal" is usually after you've been to court and had the judgement ruling against you, then "appeal" to a higher court, isn't it?

If you are called to be a witness, isn't that a "subpoena"?

I have no idea what this may be.

Maybe they're fishing, to try to find, among acquaintances, someonewho may be able to shed some light on a situation. Which it seems that you know nothing about.

You are under no obligation to give a witness statement to the police unless you wish to.

The court however can subpoena you to: 1. Appear in court and give testimony 2. Appear in court and produce documents or evidence you may have or 3. Order you to testify at a deposition usually held at a law office.

Did you actually have to sign for the letters? If not you probably were not properly served. They have to be court documents. The police have no power to subpoena on their own.

No sure what you mean by "appeal". An appeal is something a convicted person files to get the case retried.

OJ makes a good point. The police may just be on a fishing expedition. Refuse to take the bait. For that matter don't play. You may even become the bait. Bad cops will do anything when their case is weak.

sorry if I used wrong name.I'm from Poland and here it's always call an "appeal".Maybe you are right.The only thing I can say them is "I don't know" and it's not a lie,cuz I know one thing-that boy has a problems with drugs.But I don't know nothing more,I didn't talk about it with my brother.Maybe u are right that cops are looking for bait.Thanks for posts anyway

Well Polish law is probably a lot different than US law. So maybe the police can force you to give a statement there.

Our constitutional rights and laws are different so you will have to seek advice there.

If you don't know, then saying "I don't know" is just fine. Are you saying you have to testify in court? If so, don't offer additional information like "I know he has a drug problem" unless you are asked specifically.

Sorry you and your sister have to go through this. And tell your brother to keep better company from now on. You shouldn't be put in this position!

Ed, zuzka is not from US or Canada so I'm guessing Polish laws are different as well as terminology. We might call what she calls an appeal a summons? In any case I think someone familiar with Polish law should answer this question. Contacting an attorney could be a good idea as right now she's just guessing as to what they might want.

thx for advices.It's not a court,it's police station,maybe that's why I am little woried (even if I really know nothing in this case)cuz I don't trust cops after all bad things I heard and read about them..About my brother-he changed his company when he got married,but as we can see an old "friend" didn't forgot about him.

Zuzka, this is what I expected. The police are only interested in finding out if you know anything about this man. You should tell them what you know, even if that means you don't know anything. Police need to question all possible witnesses to determine if they have enough evidence to charge this man with a crime; it's part of their job.

They would never ask you to testify in court unless they knew you had something of value to say.

Don't fear the police, just answer their questions honestly and you'll be fine.

Maybe the police are just wanting to know where your brother is? I know you want advise but I doubt that anyone here can help you since most of us seem to be from the US or Canada. I'd hate for one of us to give the wrong advice. Is there someone there you trust and can ask? I hope you get your answers. Are the police in your country usually not to be trusted? I know is some countries that is the case but I don't know that about Poland. I've only known one other person from Poland and we never talked about Polish law. Sorry I can't be of help. Please keep us posted. Personally, I love hearing about other countries and customs. Welcome to the site!

zuzka lives in Poland not North America. I have no experience with Polish law, law enforcement or court procedures so I can't give you any advice except to contact someone familiar with your laws.

I'd hate to see our new friend do something based on incompetent advice from this forum that could get them into trouble.

My feeling is that it's an investigation and they want to see what you know about a situation. If that's the case, I wouldn't worry unless you know something more about procedures there that could affect it. Seek legal counsel locally to find out what you should do, say and not say. Keep us posted on what happens.

thanks all for posts! ( I was sleeping:P remember about time difference!).It's true that we have different law for sure but it's always good to share with our doubts.I talked also with my polish friend and he said that police can do nothing to me if I really don't know anything in this case.My anxiety is related with that I've never been before at the police station nor as a witness nor as a suspect but I heard a lot that polish police is really unpleasant,vulgar and that they like to intimidate during an interrogation.Anyway I hope they will see that I really know nothing and they let me go.I will let you know after my meeting with cops.It will be on monday.
