Most places you call if you just press "0" several times you will get a human.

This is really good info. -thanks! I am getting a bonus this Friday (apparently it's like a belated Christmas bonus) so aside from paying some bills I could really use a few things like some kind of drip irrigation (a flat irrigation hose, for example) and a regular hose. And, last year my husband built me a little copper trellis using the "make your own copper trellis instructions" - maybe if the prices are really really good I will get some more copper to build another one. Please - all you Mamma Bears (said with great respect - I'm a mom too) take a deep breath, stand back, and calm down. I have no doubt that that phone call was upsetting and frightening. Your daughter was smart to call you, and I think you were smart to investigate and also for Dad to call back and make himself abundantly clear. If the caller had bad intentions, he now knows that your daughter has a pissed-off no-nonsense male for protection. That can't hurt. But please do consider that the caller may not have had bad intentions. As you noted Bethpen, your daughter was kind to several young men with poor social skills, any one of whom might have made that call without understanding at all how it might have seemed to her... He may genuinely have considered her a friend, and have wanted to reestablish contact and see how her new job was going, and had no idea how creepy it would have seemed. But your daughter's creeped-out reaction may have alerted him to the fact that the phone call wasn't going well, so he declined to give his name for that reason - not thinking how that would make it all even worse... This type of action and lack of insight would be very typical of a young man with autism. This call was a single action, not a series, that was perceived as creepy because it did not conform to social norms. There was nothing threatening in what was said, but the social inappropriateness (that's the nature of the autism disability) created a perceived problem. A mountain out of what could truly be a molehill. At this point there has been one phone call with a message that was inappropriate and yes, creepy, but not actually threatening. Please try and keep that in perspective, and carefully consider the option that it may not have been meant to provoke fear. That said, I do agree with the suggestions to inform HR where your daughter works, and to ask for specific training about how to handle threatening calls. Been there, done that...lint is such a HUGE annoyance to my life. We're in a 2nd floor condo where the dryer vent ducting goes to the roof through the attic over 20 feet and several elbows. My husband bought the condo years before we met, and the ducting was clogged after several years. At the time, he decided to disconnect the vent from the duct. The resulting moisture did some damage to the cabinetry (swelling of the particle board, even under layers of oil-based paint). Soon after we married, he decided we needed to fix the problem correctly. He went up into the attic and disassembled the ducting, brought it outside, and blew it out with his air compressor. I pushed some cleaning tool through it as well. We can't be doing this regularly! I mean preferably, never again! So, I had him put a filter -- a gallon paint strainer -- over the dryer vent where it connects to the machine. This clogs every month or so, we pull the machine out, disconnect the vent, clean the strainer, and put it back. This is still an annoying chore, but not the nightmare of dealing with the whole duct run. My husband had a cool idea, that what we need to do is sew a new, longer strainer that tapers to a skinny point, so that even when it clogs at the point, there can still be air flowing past the clogged strainer, and we should be able to go longer between cleanings. We got a new dryer last summer, and pulled the ducting out of the attic to clean it -- but it was already clean as a whistle. So, our secondary filter system has kept the duct run clean for 9 years. I found you can buy secondary lint traps with a door that opens to clean them out, but we don't have room to install the box in our laundry room, and I don't think it would work any better or be easier to clean than our homemade filter. When I redo the floor, I plan to put magic slider thingies under the dryer feet to make it easier to move in and out, plus I won't want to gouge my new floor. I have researched other solutions. People claim that solid metal vent will maintain better airflow than pleated, but I think it will still clog because we need 2 90-degree elbows to get it connected to the duct in the wall. And if it clogs, how do we pull out the machine with a non-stretching vent? If we could move the duct in the wall to match the dryer vent outlet, that would eliminate 2 elbows and would probably help... I also found you can install a secondary fan in the ducting near the exit, increasing the airspeed in long ducts so the lint won't clog. They cost $150-200, but if I never had to clean out the duct run or pull out the dryer to clean my makeshift secondary lint trap ever again, it would be well worth it. I also think that our ducting is leaky somewhere, because rooms on the other side of the wall (our master bath) get crusted with lint all the time. Finding and sealing those leaks would probably improve airspeed some, plus save me tons of work cleaning the lint all the time. I think the additional fan is the way to go. In 2 other areas where we replaced an ineffective low-cfm cheap fan with a high-cfm good one, like the hood over our cooktop, it made an amazing difference, night and day. This is a great example of someone who probably shouldn't be doing FSBO. If the simple stuff upsets you, you're going to be a mess when you start working on an offer. I always FSBO, but I am NEVER rude to agents, even those who call just to offer to list my homes. I am currently in the process of closing a home I was going to FSBO but an agent sent out a letter asking if any units were for sale. I let him sell to his waiting client because he was comfortable meeting my financial needs (I have a bottom line cash out amount I want) and we just upped the price to include his fees and closing costs. If I were you I'd consider calling back and making a totally BS excuse about the fact that you were having a bad day. Share the template information and close your call with a simple "If you know anyone suitable for the house I'd love to show it to them". This isn't the best market to peeve off the professionals. Even in a FSBO there's room for negotiations with pros. I have paid fees to several agents for bringing me a buyer..negotiated fees, less than the normal 6% but still...a sale is a sale and if they have a buyer...I'm never rude!

Here's how I get a human - make an un-intelligable response - stutter, slur your words, hit a bunch of wrong keys - the robot can't decipher what you are saying and they will get a live person on the line.

I remember reading that if you don't push or say anything, they will assume you're on a dialup phone, or that there is something wrong with your keypad, and they'll give you a person. I've tried it several times, and it's always worked.

Some time ago the province-wide (i.e. north of slightly east of Fargo, ND to north of Albany, NY) section of our national broadcaster, that holds a phone-in for over an hour about noon, five days a week, had the topic asking how we reacted to getting a recorded message offering a variety of selections when we phoned a company.

I said that when I was feelng mischievous, a substantial part of the time, I'd keep track of the time that I called and how long it took to get to talk to a warm body.

Then I'd say that I'd waited, say 2 minutes and 10 seconds to talk to that person, and that, since their company was saving money by offering me a number of options that didn't interest me instead of having the phone answered by a person who could direct my call immediately, but wasting my time, I proposed to pay them back by talking nonsense to that person for 2 minutes and 10 seconds, then get down to business.

Several of them have said that they were busy and had no time for such nonsense, and I said that if they didn't want to talk to me, that I'd like to talk to their supervisor. A couple have transferred me, but no one has hung up. Some of the supervisors have told me to press "0".

If someone had hung up, I'd have called back and tried to get as high as I could in the company and given that person a piece of my mind - not too large a piece ... can't afford too much of that kind of loss.

When I spoke of this some time ago, someone said that possibly I was dealing with a call centre, whose staff are evaluated by the number of calls that they handle ... so I decided that next time I'd ask first whether that were the case.

The host of the program said, "Oh, I love that ... I'm going to do that"!

When I wrote of this before. ... someone ... here ... said ... that ... I ... could ... accomplish ... the ... same ... result ... by ... speaking ... very ... slowly.

Freezing rain, then snow planned for around here! Think I'll stay home.

We got about 6" (other areas got quite a lot more) last week ... but a rain yesterday pretty well did away with all of it - the streams will be really full.

I always hit the zero...most of the time it works,although sometimes they answer and put you on hold and subject you to listening to awful music for prolonged periods.
This is especially true for any goverment agencies!Grrrrrrrrr!

That annoying music on hold....that is why everyone needs a speaker phone. You can continue doing something else while you are on hold.
