food bargain today!?!

Wasn't thinking of turkey, but just hadda buy a "restaurant sytle" turkey breast today... wings on. It was only $6! In another month or so probably won't see them for less than twice that price. Had guy in the back cut it in half so I could freeze half for later.

Not sure what a restaurant style turkey breast is, but it does sound like you got a good deal. Even a small half turkey breast around here is going to be in the $15.00 to $20.00 range.

I'll have to look for turkey. I like it but don't think of making it other than on holidays.

Living on a rather low fixed income means one has to be frugal. Yes, I shop for bargains in food. We have only 2 grocery stores here. One is a Texas chain, the other is a Super Walmart. Not a lot of choices. Walmart used to mark down their meats 2 to 3 days before the 'sell by' date. I found them to always be still very good. One day while shopping I overheard a customer asking about one of the employees in the meat department. Turns out she is a friend of the employee and wanted him to save all the mark downs for her. I have not seen a marked down package of meat since. Good for her, Bad for me! Seems like that ought to be against store policy. But I guess they need to sell it. I also try to buy all our groceries, and other things, too, only when they are on sale. Baked goods, not so much. But then I don't buy many baked goods. I bake our own. And it seems the stores here are not nearly as good about marking things down in the produce section as some of you have mentioned. I do envy those if you that have such choices! Oklamoni. If you like thrift stores check out the Goodwill Industries online auction site...its an online auction sort of like ebay but the proceeds go directly to Goodwill Industries, which I feel is a very worthy cause and you cannot begin to imagine some of the bargains I have found there. I am into photography and I have bought cameras, lenses and other items for pennies on the dollar. They have all kind of categories...hobbies & crafts..kitchenwares, collectibles, cameras & camcorders, clothes, jewelry, antiques, tools and much more I will caution you though, when shopping through their listings check out the photos real well. I find that in most instances the ppl who write the descriptions know very little about what they are describing. To give you an example of what I have found there, about a year ago I bought an old 35mm film camera that came with three lenses and a carrying case. The camera works fine, but we all know that film is almost a thing of the past. What I was really interested in was the lenses because they all three work with my new Digital SLR. I bought that whole set for $26 + $8 S+H..just one of those lenses in that set is selling on Ebay right now for $199. Here is the web address: www.shopgoodwill.com

I want to go shopping with Marilyn too. I see Fresh Thyme is a chain, I was going to say the closest nice farmers market to us won't be open other than weekends until the end of this month...and it's an hour away. We're really short a good local store now with losing our Haggen Top foods to their bankruptcy. Walmart remodeled and added full grocery and there seems to be a wide variety, many choices, of packaged foods, canned, spices etc but I don't buy a lot of those products - I am not impressed with produce, dairy, meats there. That pretty much leaves Safeway. With this weeks sale I paid 87 cents/pound for whole chickens yesterday. 69 cents/lb for cabbage. Asparagus was $2.99/lb and I passed, didn't buy any. Avocados $1.50 each. Not a real bargain in the basket ;-) Nicole, I just went back and read through your figures. Wow. You may take the best shoppers award for the day....

I thought about this thread today when I found a great deal. A KMart about 15 minutes from me is closing and since I'm on the hunt for good deals on school clothes I headed there. I figured all the kids clothes would be picked over considering its 40 to 70 % off but wow the store was packed with stuff. Widh I would have been able bbq to buy more... but just for Chip(9) I got 8 tee's with characters and different stuff on them, 4 pairs of jeans, 3 shorts, 2 packs of 7 boxer briefs, 6 pk of white undershirts, 12 pk of socks, a Chicago Bulls book bag, a tee shirt and a hoodie with his school logo, 3 Polo Club short sleeved button up shirts all for 77$. I could not believe the great deal. I got Tim as almost the same sorts of stuff minus the jeans and book bag but found him a winter coat and his stuff came to 68$

Restaurant style has wings and all the "goodies"... neck, liver, gizzards. Regular turkey breast doesn't.

Elery bought a regular turkey breast here too, a bit less than $7. I like turkey and seldom think of cooking it for myself, so he put it on the grill today with a rub of Penzey's new "Arizona" seasoning, they have a free coupon on the front of their current catalog.

It's way, way, way too hot for me. Did I mention it was spicy? LOL It has ancho chilies and chipotle and some other kind of chilies, but no salt. Too much for me, Elery's taking that bottle home with him!

I make turkey and dressing at least once a month. I'm making soup today with turkey thighs and a couple of wings. There is a pasta vendor at the Farmer's Market. His family has been making pasta up in Hibbing, MN for a hundred years. Last fall I brought some turkey soup to my friend I help at the market. I shared some with the pasta guy. This past Saturday he gave me a new product to try. It's thick like those thick egg noodles but it's small bits. He calls them soup noodles and wanted my opinion. Can't wait to try them!

I had planned on giving that seasoning to my niece. I got the coupon and when I saw the list of ingredients I said - nope! The niece's husband and two boys will love it!
