Any Holiday Food Bargains ?

Have you found any food bargains for Thanksgiving? We bought turkeys for $.69 a pound, sweet potatoes were three pounds for $1.00, five pounds of russet potatoes were $.79 and Libby's canned vegetables were three cans for $1.00. I bought some but not necessarily for the Thanksgiving meal. Any bargains out there for you?

Yes, I snagged sweet potatoes for .38/lb! I have seen frozen turkeys available for an unbelievable .48/lb!!! haven't picked one up yet, but plan to. :)

No, they are not Citrus--maybe will post some later. But thought you might like to look at some other flowers. These guys are a bit confused. Normally, this variety has bloomed in March into early April. I found them blooming this morning. I have to plant the Camellia japonica quite near the house as otherwise the deer will eat them (flowers and leaves--remember they are in the tea family). There is another bank of Camelia japonica on the eastern side of the house. They are easy to take care of and like our Citrus, also prefer acid soil.--They also should have some shade from the strongest sun (summer AND WINTER). Here is a link that might be useful:

Living on a rather low fixed income means one has to be frugal. Yes, I shop for bargains in food. We have only 2 grocery stores here. One is a Texas chain, the other is a Super Walmart. Not a lot of choices. Walmart used to mark down their meats 2 to 3 days before the 'sell by' date. I found them to always be still very good. One day while shopping I overheard a customer asking about one of the employees in the meat department. Turns out she is a friend of the employee and wanted him to save all the mark downs for her. I have not seen a marked down package of meat since. Good for her, Bad for me! Seems like that ought to be against store policy. But I guess they need to sell it. I also try to buy all our groceries, and other things, too, only when they are on sale. Baked goods, not so much. But then I don't buy many baked goods. I bake our own. And it seems the stores here are not nearly as good about marking things down in the produce section as some of you have mentioned. I do envy those if you that have such choices! Tonight the temp will go down to 3º, with wind chills of -13, and then a HIGH of 11 tomorrow, with -16 wind chills. I will not be wearing my new coat, because I will not so much as open the front door except to pluck some firewood off the porch. I usually put my garbage out and set up the trash bins on Tuesday, but I'll do that today as it's a "warm" 21º. I also want to hang a bird feeder or two. I've been holding off because of reports that the bears haven't gone into hibernation. We need a little summer's rhythm, Summersrhythm!

I purchased a turkey @ .69cents a lb, then used store coupons for an additional $4.50 off! Day old white bread for the stuffing was marked down to .89cents a loaf, isn't it only .10cents more when fresh? Everything else seemed higher than usual too...like the cream cheese was $1.25/8oz. The celery was .99cents a lb & the bacon was $2.99/12oz.

I got sweet potatoes for 33-cents a pound and stocked up. They may go as low as 29-cents a pound after Christmas at Wal-Mart - at least they have in the past. I make microwave sweet potato chips with them, as well as a plethora of other dishes.

Russet potatoes, usually a big loss-leader - BOGOF - didn't materialize this year. I would stock-up and make freezer mashed potatoes with them. Too bad... We're at the end of our potatoes from the garden.

I got the 38¢ a pound sweet potatoes too. That's all I was looking for. Food prices in general seem so much higher than last year. Paper products too. I guess the Social Security people who decided a cost-of-living increase wasn't needed never go grocery shopping.

I bought a Holmes smokehouse smoked Cajun turkey to put in the freezer for Christmas because they were on sale at a dollar off regular price per lb. I figured I better get it when I could find one, I had to go to 3 grocery stores looking for one.
