Suggestions for removing unpleasant odor from bread machine?

About three months ago, I found a little used bread machine in a thrift shop. I don't think this machine was used but maybe once or twice, it looks that new. Price was less than $10. I couldn't pass it up. I love mixing bread by hand but the wrists can't handle the kneading anymore. I have been keeping up with all the posts about letting the bread machine do the heavy work and then baking the bread in the oven and it sounds like the way to go. After just getting back to work since unemployment, this was the only way I was going to be able to afford a bread machine for awhile.

My problem is the smell coming from the interior. Smells like stale cigarette smoke! Evidently the former owner was a very heavy smoker. I have cleaned the bucket. Then placed small containers of baking soda, then vinegar inside the unit for awhile, and have been keeping the unit open hoping the smell would diminish but nothing has worked. I also tried tea tree oil on a cotton ball and placed that in a small Pyrex cup inside the unit and left it for a few days, but you can still smell the cigarette smoke. I hate to waste the baking ingredients and end up with a loaf of bread that smells and taste of cigarettes.

Anyone have an idea that might work that I missed?

I would try making a paste of baking soda and lemon, and cleaning it with that. Is it just the pan the bread bakes in, or is the smell also inside the bread machine itself?

If that doesn't work, then I'd try making a paste of dishwasher detergent.

A bread maker can look brand new but it may have been used hundreds of times.

The odor would not be coming from outside surfaces.

Depending on the model and make, the inside of a bread maker is very complicated. It has motors, belts gears and lots of sensitive digital electronics, heating elements, etc. Over time, lint and dirt can collect internally and lingering odor can be absorbed. Tobacco odor is a semi-volatile organic compound (SVOC), it takes months for it to be gone.

You may want to find a place, such as a machine shop or auto repair shop where they have compressed air guns. Have them blow out all the dirt inside the machine thru any openings you can find. The best would be to open up the machine to do a thorough cleaning.

You should not try to use any liquid cleaning agents which can damage the electrical and electronic parts.

But if you know how to identify electronic and electrical part, i.e. what is a capacitor, resistor, IC chip, thermistor, etc., you can use a Q Tip and clean them with hydrogen peroxide to neutralize the tobacco chemicals.

Afterwards, have the machine go thru many baking cycles. You donÂt actually need to have dough inside to do that. The machine parts get hot and heat accelerates evaporation of any remaining odor.

If you have not damaged the non-stick surface by using metal on it, or the machine hasn't overheated it, my guess is you just got an example with a crappy or defective non-stick coating. If Crisco won't stop the sticking, there is no way oil will, so don't bother with that. If the machine is new, simply return it to the store and get a different brand or contact the manufacturer and raise hell. If it is old, toss it and get a new one. Trying a different brand is recommended, too. But if you get a new one and it sticks too, then you will have to remove the super-glue from your bread recipe! LOL!

I just bought the same machine last week 11-29-23. 15 years later the Zo Supreme haven't corrected the problems that you experience back then. I'm disappointed as well! Top crust very light, sides and bottom very dark and crust is extremely like a brick. My old machines produced much better loafs of bread and way less cheaper. This machine is excellent for making dough but not for making bread in the machine. I thought I was buying a machine to do both actions great. NOPE! Perhaps the Virtuoso Plus is better? I would not recommend the supreme model!

Unpleasant odor from gas furnace return air intake

Thanks, bpChill -- you are correct, and it was good to have the furnace examined and cleaned up (the duct cleaning workers removed and cleaned the large fan box). However, the odor problem remained -- until I decided to spend most of the next day crawling around down there and checking everything out a lot closer. With the furnace running, I noticed that a large section of old fiberglass insulation was billowing out with hot air blowing from behind it. Upon close examination, I discovered that the original installers had left a 5" x 8" gap in the sheet metal case that comprises the blower box, and had apparently tried to cover it with foil-covered tape that had long since torn away. This was why the crawl space was always so warm when the furnace operated -- I was losing hot air into it!!!! I fastened down the sheet metal with screws, bought a small piece of sheet metal and screwed it down over the gap, installed new foil-covered (code) duct tape over all the gaps and wrapped the top of the furnace with a new bat of foil-covered fiberglass insulation. It was while doing this that I pushed up the wide, flexible ducting from the main house air intake where it entered the bottom of the furnace -- and saw a rat tail protruding from the narrow gap between the bottom of the sheet metal air intake box and the concrete pad on which the whole heater sat. The dead rat attached to the tail had apparently crawled in there, got stuck and died, perhaps a week ago. And jeez, did it stink!! Now the source of the odor was found; I disposed of the rat and scraped and vacuumed away the adherent material from it on the concrete, vacuumed up the remaining rat droppings on and around the pad and the old insulation, and pulled out and and disposed of the old, torn insulation. Within a few hours, the odor from the air intakes inside the house was gone. Success! The moral of the story is, if you smell what seems like a dead animal, it certainly IS a dead animal. One thing, though that concerns me about the furnace -- I've read that the electronic igniters (carbide or nitride)on these furnaces are supposed to last maybe 5 years. Mine is still going strong after 15!

CC, my Zo does not have an adjustment for the first rise, I'm assuming the thermostat automatically adjusts to the internal temperature of the machine, and that's only an assumption. FOAS, what would you like for a basic bread recipe? Something like a plain french baguette? Or a sweeter eggier farmhouse white? Even honey wheat? How I bake the loaves depends on the crust I want. If I want crusty baguettes, I shape the loaves and bake them freeform on a hot baking sheet. Many here use baking stones. If I want a tender crust and some white sandwich type bread, I use Grandma's old farmhouse white recipe, with milk and eggs or Sol's recipe for Hnoey rolls: Personally, I really like honey wheat, so that's what I make most of and sometimes I make free formed round loaves with lots of crust and sometimes I bake it in loaf pans for sandwich slices and toast. If I want a soft crust I brust with melted butter when it comes hot from the oven, if I want a crusty loaf I spritz it with some water a couple of times while baking. I know Ann T sprays her oven with water, and she uses a stone to get the proper heat and humidity. Anyway, for what it's worth, here are the recipes I use for those basic things: HONEY WHOLE WHEAT BREAD INGREDIENTS: 3-1/2 to 4 cups all purpose flour Â 2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour Â 2 pkg. active dry yeast Â 2 tsp. salt Â 1 cup milk Â 1 cup water Â 1/2 cup honey Â 3 Tbsp. oil Â 1 egg PREPARATION: In large bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 cup whole wheat flour, the yeast, and salt and mix well. In saucepan, heat milk, water, honey, and oil until a thermometer reads 120-130 degrees F (warm) Add liquid mixture to flour mixture and stir to combine. Beat this batter for 3 minutes. Then, gradually stir in rest of whole wheat flour and enough remaining all-purpose four to form a firm dough. Sprinkle work surface with flour and knead dough, adding more flour if necessary, for 5-8 minutes until smooth and satiny. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning the dough in the bowl to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour, until double in bulk. Punch down dough and divide into 2 pieces. On lightly floured surface, roll or press each piece of dough to a 14x7" rectangle. Starting with shorter side, roll up tightly, pressing dough into roll with each turn. Pinch edges and ends to seal and place dough, seam-side down, into greased 9x5" bread pans, making sure short ends of bread are snugly fitted against the sides of the pans. Turn dough into greased bowl and let rise in warm place until double. Punch down dough, shape into loaves or dinner rolls and let rise again. Bake at 350 until done (25 - 30 minutes for loaves, 12-15 minutes for dinner rolls) Makes 1 large or two small loaves or 18 dinner rolls BREADMAKER INSTRUCTIONS: Heat milk, butter and sugar. Place two eggs in bread pan, add liquid. On top of liquid place flour, salt and vital wheat gluten. Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour yeast in well. Do not allow it to contact wet ingredients. Process as for dough, or allow machine to bake. Honey Rolls 1 cup milk 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup butter [1 stick] 2 teaspoos salt 1-2 tablespoons granulated sugar* 2 pkges. dry yeast 1/2 cup warm water [110Âº-115ÂºF] 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 6 - 6 1/2 cups AP flour Heat the milk, add butter and salt. Set aside while butter melts. Stir in the honey. In another bowl, combine the warm water, yeast and sugar. Let it sit until yeast is completely dissolved, about 6-7 minutes. Combine milk mixture with yeast mixture. And stir in the beaten eggs. Beat in 4 cups flour. Add enough remaining flour to make a soft, but not sticky dough. Place dough in greased bowl, turning to coat both sides. Cover and allow dough to rise 1 hour. Punch dough down, and allow to rise another hour. Punch down again, and shape dough into rolls. Let it rise again 45 minutes to an hour or until doubled in volume. Preheat your oven to 375ÂºF and bake rolls for 25 minutes or until a deep golden brown. For a very soft crust, brush rolls with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven. Note: You could omit the sugar from this recipe altogether. I sometimes use about a teaspoon of the honey called for in the recipe to feed the yeast instead of the sugar. Finally, here's one that's especially targeted at the food processor, if you want to try it. It was simple, came out fine, but I liked the one I made with the bread machine better, the interior texture was "holier", if you get my drift. It goes without saying that I didn't proof the yeast, and I do have french bread pans. The dough is pretty "slack", so if you don't have french bread pans you'll need a "baker's couche". I understand that the canvas in a real couche absorbs some moisture and makes the bread crustier. I've used parchment paper to "prop up" the loaves and it works, and I've baked these freeform and it also works but my loaf tends to flatten out. I don't really care, but it's not the traditional shape, LOL. French Bread in the Food Processor 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar 2 teaspoons active dry yeast (from a 1/4-oz package) 1 2/3 cups warm water (105-115Â°F) 1 tablespoon olive oil Pulse flour, salt, and vinegar in a food processor to combine. Stir together yeast and 1/3 cup water in a small bowl until yeast is dissolved, then let stand until foamy, about 5 minutes. (If mixture doesn't foam, discard and start over with new yeast.) With motor running, pour yeast mixture and remaining 1 1/3 cups warm water into flour mixture in processor, blending until dough forms a ball and pulls away from side of processor bowl, about 1 minute. Cover processor feed tube and let dough rise until it fills bowl, about 1 hour. Pulse several times to deflate dough. Generously oil bread pans with olive oil. Turn out dough onto a work surface and divide in half (dough will be very soft). Press 1 half into a 10- by 8-inch rectangle and fold in the 2 short outer sides to meet in the middle, pinching edges together. Turn over (seam side down), then roll and stretch into a 15-inch-long irregular loaf. Put loaf, seam side up, in bread pan and turn to coat with oil, leaving loaf seam side down. Repeat procedure with remaining dough. Let loaves rise, uncovered, in a warm draft-free place 30 minutes. Put oven rack in upper third of oven, then put a large roasting pan with 1 inch of water in it on bottom of gas oven or on lowest rack of electric oven. Preheat oven to 450Â°F. Make 3 shallow diagonal slashes down length of each loaf with razor. Bake loaves 30 minutes, then carefully remove pan of water from oven. Remove bread from pans and turn upside down on upper oven rack, then bake until golden and crusty all over, about 5 minutes more. Cool loaves on a rack. Good luck. Don't forget that if your water is too hot, you'll kill the yeast. If you think it the dough needs to be kneaded more, it does. More better than less, when kneading bread. Oh, and if you want to rip that end chunk off hot from the oven, go ahead. It's your bread, but there is a difference in taste and texture if you let it cool a bit. Annie

What dcarch said...only, if you are able to remove the protective casing yourself, a can of that compressed air you get to clean out computers and such might do the job without having to pay someone else to do it.

It's just a minor difference of opinion (and dcarch, from what I've read is more tech savvy than I) but I'd probably use rubbing alcohol rather than hydrogen peroxide if I attempted a Q-tip cleaning of my own, simply because it evaporates so much faster, so no possibility of leaving moisture on sensitive parts. The diff is probably negligible.

Also, I actually have experienced cases where seemingly clean, impermeable surfaces reek of tobacco or other odors. Plastic absorbs odors, and these can be released by heat or moisture, both of which are produced by bread machines in action.

I suppose you've washed off the entire exterior as best as you're able. I have had good luck with Febreeze, spraying it on and letting it dry. Dunno what the heck they put in it, but it works on lots of things that frustrate me. Of course, you don't really want bread that tastes of Febreeze either...I was referring only to outside surfaces, lol!

I do agree with dcarch re the many baking cycles. And an old fashioned remedy for odors in clothes and other items is to soak them in lemon juice and leave them in the sun...could you perhaps run the machine outdoors on a hot day, thoroughly painted on the outside parts with lemon juice?

Put some charcoal in the bread pan (NOT the self lighting kind) and close it up for a few days. Should be good as new. If it will take the smell of rotten food out of a refrigerator that was accidentaly turned off, it will take that smell out of the bread machine.

The first and easiest thing would be to bake a loaf of bread...just a flour,water yeast and salt bread...
Flour has the capacity to absorb all sorts of oils.
I would not touch it with hydrogen peroxide, it's not a solvent and is water based.
But I think if you can get real charcoal and not briquettes, I would try that first.
Oh yeah....if that loaf of bread smells ....don't eat it! LOL!

I'm sure you could get activated charcoal from somewhere near you...a pet supply store or feed store, and that is a GREAT idea!

I'd put it in the bread pan as Tami suggested, but also put some in a plastic bucket or bag that will fit the entire machine and seal it up tight for a few days or a week. It couldn't possibly hurt anything, and might take the smell out of all the parts without fussy cleaning!

There is a pet store not far from my job, I will stop there tomorrow and find out if they have the activated charcoal. I never thought about trying that to solve this smelly issue. After trying that for a few days then I will mix a loaf of bread and see what happens.

This is a Welbilt AMB300 and the outside of the unit is very clean and new looking. The smell is inside the bucket compartment. The bucket doesn't smell unless I leave it inside the unit. When I brought it home I cleaned the outside with a damp dish cloth using wash water with Dawn. I also wiped out the bucket the same way making sure the cloth wasn't wet enough to drip. There wasn't even any dried bits of dough in the bucket or in the machine. Which was why I figured the unit had not been used very much. The former owner really kept the machine clean. It just has that awful smokey smell.

And don't worry Linda, if the bread smells the least bit smoky, I won't be eating any!

Thank you everyone for your help. If the charcoal doesn't do the trick you have given me other options to try.

you can get at an Eletronics Supply ( maybe Radio shack)

I haven't bought any for awhile.
There are also large Q tips for cleaning. ( 12 inches long)

I don't think the compressed air cans for blowing out PC dust would do the job.

Do you have a friend that is somewhat mechanically inclined, that has an air compressor???

If you do, he may be able to open the machine enough to clean the inside and
blow all the dust etc. out, using high air pressure.

I don't know if charcoal would work, if the odors are imbedded in dust and oils.
The inside of a refridge is smooth and and easier to clean.

I use room odor neutralizers in the frige and the Micro Wave,especially after cooking fish.
The fans circulate it everywhere.

After a cleaning job, then the Charcoal would be worth a try.

I'm just wondering if it's burned (or burning) components you're smelling. That can give quite a smell. If that's the case, it's not worth messing with. Bread makers are at garage sales often. Spread the word that you want one an you might be surprised at the number of people with one on the shelf they'd part with.

1. Yes, there are two types of canned spray for cleaning electronic components. One is mostly compressed dry air; the other has some Freon type compound in it. The compressed air type is not effective because itÂs not powerful enough.

2. Hydrogen peroxide is one of the ways to neutralize tobacco compounds.

3. There are places where they specialize in cleaning electronic equipment using fluorocarbon baths. I did not mention that because I donÂt think it will be too cheap.

4. Your local laundry dry cleaning chemical actually may work. (I am only guessing, donÂt try that).

5. Heating by baking will work, slowly.

6. Dough is not effective in absorbing odor.

7. Charcoal is not effective in absorbing odor.

8. Activated charcoal is extremely effective in absorbing odor, however, it is not going to work in this application because of the concept of "vapor pressure" in an open environment principle, which I will not go into too much here.

Some thoughts:

1. Remove the paddle in the basket. You may need whatÂs called a gear remover to do that. There may be some crap under there.

2. It is very easy to open up the case to get into the insides. There are not that many screws to unscrew.

Tips:

1. You may need a PhilipÂs head screw driver of a correct size.
2. Assuming you do not have the repair manual, if you donÂt think you can remember how to put everything back the same way, have a digital camera to record your steps.
3. The control panel may be attached to the main board by a printed Âcircuit multi-pin type of connector. There is a little locking tap you will need to release to pull it out.
4. The connectors to the heating coil will take some work to pull off.
5. I donÂt think a garage will charge you money to use their compressed air gun for a minute or two.
6. Finally, to screw back self-tapping screws. Insert the same screw into the hole, turn with very light pressure counter-clockwise. You will feel or hear a little click, then turn clock-wise to secure the screw. This will avoid the stripping and damaging the threads. Do not over tighten the screws.

I cannot think of a reason why the tobacco stench cannot be removed.

For anything to create an odor it must be somewhat volatile. By definition volatile means changing form...for substances which can be detected with the nose, that means vaporizing. If something doesn't vaporize you can't smell it. And that happens faster at warmer temperatures.
If you leave that bread machine open to the air, the smell will eventually go away.
you can hasten that by heating. I don't know if running a cycle empty will hurt the machine, so I suggested making some inexpensive bread.
I would not use any smelly solvents nor dangerous chloroflurocarbons like freon nor other smelly cleaners. Don't chase a sparrow with an elephant gun.
Be patient it will go away....and there is a possibility that what you are smelling isn't tobacco smoke but just a closed up appliance.

It seems to me:

There are about three things to consider in a bread maker, if you were to go thru the bake cycle without dough:
1. Automatic yeast dispenser Â this is a magnetic solenoid driven setup. It will not be damaged without yeast.
2. Heating coil and the baking chamber Â the temperature is precisely and digitally controlled by a fast-acting thermocouple sensor. There is no danger of overheating.
3. Motorized paddle (paddles in a Zo machine) Â This is a high-tech solid-state controlled reversible motor, controlled by feed-back logic sensing and timing electronics. The absence of dough will not allow the motor to free-wheel and cause damage.

DC: Good suggestions.
Seems that some things won't go away , even if you have the patients of a saint.

There is a tobacco deodorizer( Vamoose )that I was going to order,
because of a Cigar odors in some appliances, that I brought home from my sons apt.
but I never did. Don't know if it works.

It can be ordered on line.( $9.99 4 OZ.) Amazon was high ?

I always associated " volatile " with something that Vaporizes very readly.
And could become violent, ( like an explosion ).

Maybe that's because I was in the Fire Department and
my thinking went along these lines.

I am going to try the charcoal as I was able to find it. Then if I notice that the odor is diminished, I will mix up a batch of bread.

If needed, my brother is very mechanical. He brings home the trucks for the company he works for and does maintenance on them and he has an air compressor. I might have to bake some bread for him to get him to tinker with this little job; but that will not be a hardship by any means!

Not at all sure why some seem to think it's necessary to call in the EMT services and open the chemical supplies and buy a produce costing more than the machine cost to remove a little odor from a used bread machine that cost less than $10...

Close it in a bag surrounded by crumpled blank newsprint for a while. If it still smells, donate it back to the thrift store!

I hate to say this but when smoking was allowed in the workplace, we had recoders with continuous tapes inside in our office (a hospital no less) and every couple of months a recorder would fail and doctors would really be upset as they could not get playbacks. Service people would come and tediously clean the inside as the smoke would leave a film on all the sensitive parts. When we were finally told this we solved the problem by outlawing smoking in the office much to the consternation of our best transcriptionists who could not type without a cigarette burning in their ashtray. My point is it may be rather difficult to remove the cigarette smell from inside the machine as the smoke residue seemed to be oiley according to the repair techs. I would, before throwing the machine out, run a couple of cycles with vinegar and water, outdoors or in the garage, to see if you can burn out the smell. Cleaning out the inside of the machine just may not be worth the effort.

My opinion: the plastic parts will hold the cigarette smell forever.

I was happy to get a set of FoodSaver canisters on Freecycle, but they smelled like cigarettes, and nothing I did could remove the smell. And these of course had no small interior parts and no place for stuff to hide.

Even if an elaborate and time-consuming process would get the odor out, which I doubt, it seems easier to find another bargain bread machine.

I had to think about this for a while whether to post this or not. I decided to post anyway. Please, please, it is not my intention to preach or to denounce anyone. This is for information only, information which sometimes we donÂt think of.

One of the really nasty thing that is happening is the way we throw away electronic equipment, especially serviceable equipment. Even you take them to legal recycling centers, somehow they all end up in third-world countries killing thousands of children every year, and messing up the environment for hundreds of years for all of us.

It is not that difficult to take care some repair/maintenance problems. Besides saving time and money, you will be very proud that you have accomplished a task successfully.

I always pick up computers on sidewalks which people threw out.

Many reasons people throw computers out. Many times itÂs just very minor problems. Most of the time when people throw out computers, they take out the hard drive and memories. I can get lots of old memories and old drives from corporate I.T. departments.

Last couple of months, I fixed four computers and donated them all to Salvation Army Thrift Shop. One replacing the power supply (5 minutes), one replacing the start switch (10 minutes), one with a stuck CPU fan, and one with no fixing, it was a working computer. (Many internal components are interchangeable).

This is how I clean really grimy smelly electronic equipment, which I do not recommend for others:

1. 100-lb psi compressed air gun to blow out the dirt. I do this outside in the garden because the dirt in the key board, power supply, CPU and graphic card heat sink is unbelievable.
2. Dump the whole thing in a tub of hot dish washing water for no more than 5 minutes.
3. Take the computer out and blow out all the water with a leaf blower.
4. Use an electric fan to blow on the computer for a few hours.
5. Wait one day to turn on the computer.

I also repair small appliances to donate.

Looking thru the Threads again, some have said it's not worth the time and money,for a $10 item.

It is really not the amount the item was purchased for but it's monetary value.

EG. I bought a Brass Urn at a Garage sale for $2. I resold it in my Collectible Shop for $250.

Bought a mirror (at Auction) with cut in Flower Designs for $2, because it needed a cleaning.

It's on my dining room wall. ( Valued at $200 ).
