That summer torte recipe . . .

I get daily e-mails from King Arthur (the flour company, not the actual king), and there's usually a recipe along with the ads. Today's recipe looked very familiar, and when I compared it with the Marian Burros one we've all been making, it turns out to be identical, except for an optional teaspoon of flavoring ingredient that KA sells. I was disappointed not to see credit given for "inspiration" at least.

Apparently someone is reading here and taking note of what's popular. So we should be very careful to use our power only for good. ;o)

I love that Summer Torte and have made it several times. You are right though - credit should definitely be given!

Well, I just went back and looked at the separate blog entry for the recipe, and they did credit the source there. So I take back the little dig. But I do think credit should be printed right along with the recipe, because lots of people never read further than that.

The original NTYimes recipe does not include vanilla. 1983. But in 2016 they published 5 Ways to Adapt Our Famous Plum Torte Recipe I wish more recipes did that. Rather than complain that comments are not the true recipe, they published reader comments for variations. Different seasonal fruits, different flours, less sugar, different sugars. Any pan will do and easily doubled for a sheet pan torte. And different liquors. I'd forgotten about the lemon juice. I appreciate the bumping of this. I'd forgotten where my original recipe came from. That was when i started making mine with cornmeal flour for gluten-free. (family member) Similar recipe using flour was one of the first things i learned to make as a wee child. Easy and fun for a young one to decorate with seasonal fruits. Mother always had fresh fruit at the table and whipped cream or ice cream. Making one tomorrow with plums and rhubarb.

Shaun, you may be right...however they're not shiny like "bald" usually is:-). And I love Ranier Cherries too, but to coin an old phrase..."they're higher than a cat's back". I usually buy a small handful at a time. I just went to Fresh Market today and if I hadn't just eaten, some of them would have come home with me. We love the Brioche from there also and so far what I've made is not as good. They display their produce etc. so well.... it makes you spend money for sure. Of course I'm all about food and if I didn't have to deal with canning tomatoes in salsa or something tomorrow I'd make that torte. We have fresh peaches from SC.

Cooks Illustrated also did a "make-over" of the Summer Torte (orginally called a Rustic Plum Cake). They mixed ground almonds with the flour/batter to make it a little more sturdy to hold up the fruit.

I tried it and it was actually very good! It had more of a sugarcookie type taste/texture whereas the "Summer Torte" is more of a cake texture.

Both are VERY good recipes.

I recently was flipping through a baking magazine/publication and came across a recipe that looked nearly identical to the summer torte, too.

I would bet that there are a number of recipes out there along the same lines. Who knows which one was "the original"?

But yes, if there is credit to be given, it would be nice if it was right up front with the actual printed recipe.
