I wanted it because it looked so easy to use. I was hoping my husband will start making something other than canned chili. I have to go to work some days including evenings. Days like that all my husband and 7-year-old eat is canned food or frozen pizza.

By the way, it was not $19.95. It's $39.95 here in Canada and it was supposed to be on sale. LOL

Oh well, guess it's going back to the store.

Why dont you try it out first? Then if you dont like it, take it back. You never know, you may love it.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but Linda, I LOVE my Flowbee! DH gets a perfect haircut at no cost, with no mess at all. It' not for every style, but works great for perfect layering/feathering.

I like my express. Works great for individual pizzas and puff pancakes. Since it is just my hubby and I, now, I wanted something that limits the amount of leftovers etc. It has it's place like anything else. Don't use it every day but I use it occasionally. Makes good fast breakfasts easy to clean up. I did get the replaceable pans particularly the one that is the full pan. As far as a timer with a fry pan I have those too and this makes it easier to just plunk in the food and listen for the time to finish without heating up my oven or even messing up the stove. It isn't like a fry pan since it has heat top and bottom both with an oven type heating. Each to his own. I can be cooking eggs for each of us while I empty the dishwasher. He can have them his way-ham, bacon, cheese, I can have them with the veggies I want. Like I said everyone has to decide if it is right for them. Of course, I have many gadgets in my kitchen. Some are used more than others.

Hokay....to each his own.
But For my money it sounds like the hot dogger and the hamburger cooker and that folding omelette pan all rolled into one.
If your husband won't cook now, what makes you think he would use that?
When you're home make some freezer ready meals for when you can't be there.
Frozen homemade breakfast burritos are a good thing to have in the freezer.
As for being easier....what could be easier than turning on the stove and putting an egg or 2 into a non stick fry pan? If it splatters, put a lid on it.

I have one too and DH and I like it a lot. We don't use it everyday, but when we do use it, it's pretty nifty and convenient. Then again, I'm a sucker for those infomercials.

LOLOL Linda, I like how you combine the hot dogger, hamburger cooker and omelette folder all into one. I guess I am a gadget sucker and I like the idea of convenient.

I have done the frozen entree thing but my husband is not a big fan of leftovers. Yes, he considers frozen (except pizza), and any pre-prepared food leftovers. He only likes eating hot food that is freshly cooked and he doesn't mind heating up a can of chili or throwing a frozen pizza into the oven. Strange, but that's how he lives all these years.

Gardenbsewer, if the gadget works it would be perfect for DH and our little boy. There are two wells so they can have the same food with differently fillings in their sandwiches, puffs etc. Since I only go to work a couple of evenings a week, hubby may not mind using the little thingy instead of chili all the time. How's the non stick holding up? I've read reviews that said the non stick came off after a couple of uses. I don't mind the fact that it cost me $40 but the thought of DH and little man eating food coated with non stick really scares me.

Shaun, I have this thing about trying out something then return it. I am not saying it's wrong for someone to do it. I just don't feel very comfortable that way so I rather not.

Donna, your hubby is brave! DH will NEVER let me touch his hair, not even over his dead body! LOL

I had one a couple of years ago and I used it ALOT for quick meals when it was just my DS and me. You can get quite creative with it. The coating on mine did wear off. But to be fair, I think it was because I used mine alot and maybe over heated it when I was first learning how to use it. I was thinking of getting one for my sister who is single and usually only cooks for herself.

I like mine. Just DON'T use raw bacon or sausage in it. It will ruin the non stick coating.

My housemate got one off the tv. It made great corn dogs and we also used it for sloppy joes with cornbread. You can make muffins, but it's like having only muffin bottoms. Cakes with candy bars inside were good also. The finish hasn't come off yet, and she used it heavily when she first got it.

Gor-gor, I had a good chuckle when I read "muffin bottoms" because these days you only hear "muffin tops" LOL I read the recipe book and it did say if the ingredients didn't rise high enough you would have to flip it over and cook a bit longer to get the top browned as well.

That's interesting.

I feel the same way....if I was too stupid to notice that I didn't like the way the knob turned or didn't like the way it cooked, unless there is something wrong with it I would keep it and call it my loss.

Look on ebay, there are plenty for sale. I'd take the new unit out of the box, examine it, and decide if it will hold up to DH's use. If you like it, return it unused to the store, buy one on ebay.

althetrainer, if you think he'd use it and it gets your little guy away from canned chili, I think that justifies the purchase. Canned chili is an abomination in my opinion, and the sodium level has to be out of sight. I see on line that your gadget costs two payments of $19.99, which brings it to $39.98 here too.

I seldom use gadgets, other than that farm animal shaped waffle iron. My basement has a panini press that Elery bought, used once. Maybe twice. It's right next to the George Foreman Grill, the stick blender and the big electric griddle. There are two of us here, three max, but I could make breakfast for a dozen with that thing! There's that marinating machine down there too, somewhere. Elery digs it out and uses it when he's here, LOL. Oh, and a turkey fryer and a countertop convection oven. All Elery's, he brought them here because we "might use them". Yeah. We might. Probably not.

I'm not a gadget person, I went through my gadget drawer in the kitchen and threw a bunch of stuff away, I couldn't shut the drawer easily and I never use the stuff. The little thing to pick pickles out of jars, the soft paintbrush that I used for pastry once and found that it shed bristles, the rolling knife sharpener, the plastic thingy that goes into a lemon so you can squeeze out just a little juice.

That said, I do use the iced tea maker and the meat slicer, the ice cream freezer and the silpat, the silicon brushes and the extendable magnet I bought to pick canning lids out of boiling water. I guess one person's gadget is another person's valuable appliance.

Truthfully, I don't see much difference in buying something like your Express and buying a fancy platter that gets used once a year at Thanksgiving or a on-sale set of crystal glasses or a silver pie server "for holidays and parties". If you paid $40 and you use it once a year, it's all the same, I think. You buy it, you store it, you seldom use it.

You want a cut glass punch bowl or a silver tea set but you don't drink tea? Go for it. You think hubs might use the GT Express, keep it.

Hey, I bought those Spode soup bowls and have used them exactly twice. Once Elery and I used them and the Princess ate some Cinnamon Toast Crunch in one when she spent the night last weekend. I still love 'em, and think they're worth the $16 I spent on them.

Yup, it's all a matter of perspective...

I feel the same way too. I never buy something just to try it out. I hate returning things. So unless something is broken or doesn't perform the way it was suppose to it doesn't get returned.

I had to look up the GTXpress. I didn't know what it was. I'd be more tempted to buy your husband a Cuisinart Griddler. If you are in Canada you can always find it at the Canadian Tire store. It would be more versatile and he could actually cook meats on it or make Panini sandwiches, etc. It isn't something that I would buy myself, but I bought one for my son a few years back and he puts it to good use.

Have you tried freezing homemade chili or homemade pasta sauces? They will taste much better than any canned product.

First, I must confess to being a gadget-lover. We got the GT Xpress 101, and then recently ordered the larger Xpress Redi Set GO, but I love both of these and have used them all the time this summer to keep the heat out of the kitchen, and to prepare really fast meals when the schedules get hectic. I normally do more cooking in my Solar Ovens, but this hasn't been a good summer for it.

The Express machines are great if you are cooking for one or two, or for that busy family who is on different schedules and would like something other than sandwiches or microwave meals. I could see how an Express would be of great help to that first-time cook in the dorm, or an elderly person having to prepare meals for one.

If a gadget like this would prevent more people from eating out (47% of our food dollars are now spent outside the home), then perhaps people could save money by eating at home more often.

I have converted a number of our favorite recipes to cooking in them, and have reduced the cooking time by at least 50% because you have heat from the bottom AND the top.

Since I like to create recipes, I've found the Express machines to be great fun for making new recipes. Even my non-cooking husband took an interest - and that's far and above the greatest benefit from where I sit at the dining table (LOL).

I was so determined to use mine, I made a meal in it every night the first week we had it to get well-acquainted with it. Now I have a file I'm working on with my own recipes.

Wow thanks everyone for you input! I am feeling more positive now. I will talk to hubby to see if he will even try it. If not, there's no point to keep something around that we're not going to use.

Ann T, we do have something similar and we also have the George Foreman Lean Mean Grill Machine. Hubby used it for a while but when he realize he had to clean it every time after he cooked he put that thing away.

Grainlady, if we do keep the Xpress, I hope you won't mind if I ask for some of your recipes? Think hubby may want to try something else other than cheese puffs and pancakes.

I am hoping he will keep the Xpress and give it a try. Took me almost two years to get him use the bread machine I bought for him. It was a lot of energy but I finally got him hooked; now he uses the dough cycle and bake a loaf of bread in the oven (with my help, of course) once a week. So he's not completely hopeless, I guess! LOL
