My maiden voyage to Aldi

Thanks to everyone who helped educate me on Aldi's. After a dr appointment today, Tyler and I made a trip just to browse and explore.

The shopping carts - I see what you guys are talking about with the chain thing. Each cart has a mechanism on it that hooks it up to the other carts when all pushed together. I didn't have a quarter with me, so I didn't get one. I also figured it would prevent me from buying a bunch of stuff too.

The store was very clean. The prices are listed up high, like at Costco, which I ended up liking. And the prices themselves are really good too. I found generic versions of some of our favorites for much, much cheaper than at Meijer. Whole milk was a dollar cheaper, but skim was the same price. Ground beef was $1.30 cheaper than Meijer. The spices were 1.09. I'm so mad I paid $4 on Sunday for cumin. The produce wasn't plentiful but it looked good and was well priced.

I was surprised at how small it was. There were maybe 5 aisles. But, they were full of staples that I normally use.

I spent $3 and bought a box of cereal for DH and a bag of (brand name) Hershey kisses. I think at any other store, these items alone would have been more than that. What a deal!

Bottom line - I will be going this Sunday prior to my regular grocery trip to see how much I'm able to save on our weekly bill.

I'm glad you enjoyed your experience so far. There are quite a few things that I don't like from there, but enough that I do to make it worth my while to go. My first few trips were with my DD who had been going there for a few years. I was able to pick her brain about the products pros/cons...she knows my tastes on things.

Make sure, that store is open on Sundays. Here in Oklahoma, actually in the Tulsa area are several Aldi's, but they aren't all open on Sundays.

Thank you everyone for all the prayers, good thoughts and kind words. The hearing went well but the ALJ (administrative law judge) did not give me his final decision, I'll have to wait for that, 6 weeks to 6 months. After nearly three years of waiting, what's another six months eh? Pfft..yeah right! LOL!! My son and his girlfriend are doing better. GF is going back to work on Monday and is feeling so much better. My son is up and using crutches some, I have heard. I've not been able to speak to him because his cell phone is shut off at the moment. Why do kids procrastinate such things?? His employer told him to heal well and not to come back to work until he is 100 %. He saw the film of the accident on the news so he knew it was bad already when DS called in. Anyway, I saw his father yesterday and he did not know if appointments for the specialist have been made or not. He was going to stop by and check in on them but I have not heard anything yet. I'll let you know when I know anything. Day two and still no lower back pain!! It's a miracle, I am just in awe over it. I always thought acupuncture was probably all in the mind but I was very wrong. I don't know how it works but I love what it has done for me in just two treatments!! I know it will be short lived but I am going to enjoy every second of it while I have it. My yard is calling to me but I am resisting so far. Actually I feel completely exhausted and I'm wondering if it is a reaction of my body because it has suddenly been relieved of the burden it has been under for so long. All day I just wanted to go in and lay down. Tomorrow, I think I'll give in to that feeling, if it is there again. Thanks for all the support. Ditto. Sounds like there is something wrong with that unit. I have an electric pressure cooker which I never use, but I really love the Fagor stovetop items. I have the one at the link; it's a great deal, even at full retail, but Amazon now has it for $96 including shipping. Highly recommended. As far as timers go, I have a Polder 898-90. Kathleen, here you go. shower, sideways, I thought I rotated it! Doesn't he look like he belongs there?! Sofa is green and tan check. I forgot to lighten it. Next two are kitchen Last two are the bedroom. The whole driver side slides out for lots of room! Kathy, we'll be back your way one of these days. I'll give you a call when we do. Kitchenkrazed09, The interior opening of the cabinet for the standard installation, which is what we did, needed to be 24"...So a standard 24" has to be backless. The flush/inset install requires 25"...Which can also be done with a standard cabinet that is backless, but away from the wall an inch. I seem to remember that they also recommend a wider cabinet for the inset look. We have a 30" frameless cabinet. Let me know if you have more questions, or if there are specific photos you'd like to see. Keep an eye on their circulars, too, for items that aren't normal grocery things. A few weeks ago they had 5,000 watt generators, new (not refurbished) for a great price. We bought one as a backup for the one we have. DH worries about us being without power for any length of time.

Our Aldi isn't very large either, but it's clean and low-cost on basic items, so is very worth the half-mile or so out of our way, to get there.

It's an interesting place isn't it? And I think it has an interesting history. All started from a mom-n-pop store way back when and the two brothers eventually took over. Trader Joe's and Aldi (short for Albrect Distributing) were split off because the two brothers got in a fight over cigarettes.

There's stuff I really like, stuff that's perfectly fine and much cheaper than anywhere else, stuff that's average and comparable in price and stuff that's well, garbage and even sometimes overpriced.

The ads are misleading at times. They don't always get in the items they're supposed to and sometimes they get the stuff early. So you never really know what you're going to find there.

It's not a store where you'll do all your shopping, but it certainly give you the chance to spend a lot less. Enjoy your adventures!

Oh, and doesn't it just make you burn about the price of spices???

Oh, do you realize, the brothers divided up their area? The Aldi in northern Germany and the Aldi in southern Germany carry different items. They also divided the rest of the world between them. I guess, I have to ask my sister again, which sector has the US. :)

I find quite different things at the Aldi in France, compared to the Aldi at my sisters in Germany. That is when I found out about the division.

Aldi did start in Germany.
