Lemon Plum-What New To You Things Have You Tried Lately?

Very tasty! First time I have ever seen them. Had to buy a couple to sample. Shoot I need to get some more before they disappear! Here is some info-
A lemon plum is a rare fruit imported from Chile. It resembles the taste of a plum, and is very sweet and juicy. The fruit has a similar shape to that of a lemon, except one end is rounded and the other end has a nipple. When unripe, they have a bright yellow color, and are sour. As they ripen, their color changes from yellow to a golden orange and then finally to a dark sunset reddish purple when ripe. They have a slightly floral, very fragrant smell. Their peak availability in the United States is very short and is typically within the month of February.

I also tried a Bolthouse Vanilla Chai Tea, I ran into DD's BF on the way out of Publix and he gave me one, It tasted like a cross between egg nog and rice pudding to me, He said they are buy one get one free right now. Might go and pick some up.

Plums seem to be underrated. I love the way they smell when you bite into a ripe one.

I made soup Sunday using leeks. I've never cooked with them before because of all the warnings about cleaning them to get the grit out. I have been missing out on a lot because they have a wonderful mild oniony flavor. And I cut into an upper part that I wasn't using and took it apart and there was no grit anywhere. Only thing is, there seems to be a lot of waste when the recipe calls for only the white part. Is there any way to use more of it?

Several ways to do the fish bowl... 1) cut the flowers and stick them under a piece of smashed pot rim. I think that was the photo you saw, can't remember. I do new displays every other week. The fish like to hide in the flowers. 2) The fish bowl is not round. The back is flat to accommodate 2 fish bowls back to back. It ends up making 1 round fish bowl when put together.. Yes compartmented. Even in person, people can't quite sort it out. Love my fishies too, wouldn't want to hurt them with fertiliser 3) When I have no blooms I buy silk blooms and stick them in. Wonderful work. I can create beautiful hand embroidered or cross stitched pieces but I surely cannot sew with a machine. I would love to learn how to quilt or sew to make beautiful items like Flamey's or Sandy's. I still use the book jacket cover and the bag holder you made for me. Everyone's pieces are beautiful.

There are lots of sources for non-alcoholic substitutions, eld. AA has some, I think. My DH has 8 years sober and we were told at his rehab that we shouldn't count on the alcohol cooking off. Sometimes I have added grape juice (white or purple) and sometimes I just add more of the broth or liquid called for in the recipe. I still miss the red wine in recipes though and sherry in seafood dishes. Every now and then, I have fixed two separate recipes-with and without! Ha. thespruceeats gourmetsleuth I like the idea of adding a little vinegar to cut the sweetness of the grape juice when substituting for red wine.

I haven't been to the Japanese markets since the pandemic started because there are always long lines to get in. The stores tend to be crowded and have narrow aisles, which is not ideal, but next month I should be okay about going, since my vaccinations will be complete and in effect. I do have kewpie mayonnaise, but only use it when I make okonomiyaki. I think I need some more okonomiyaki sauce. I could make it myself, but one of the ingredients is ketchup (I think), and I never stock ketchup. I suppose I could use tomato paste instead. I never buy mustard anymore, now that I have found a recipe for it that I like, and I have a good supply of mustard seeds and powder.

Patti, think of it this way....the dark green stems are left on to protect the tender part from damage and dessication. I've heard some TV cooks remark about freezing those stems for use when making stock. I've not done that but it sounds like a good idea. I save shrimp shells for stock!

I love plums and always look forward to seeing them in the markets. I agree that this 'lemon plum ' is special. Plums don't have a very long shelf life, sadly, and bruise so easily. They shouldn't be picked when they are still little hard because they don't continue to get sweet once picked. They'll soften up but taste mealy and bland. They are picked much too early to withstand the rigours of the commercial market.

I haven't gone exploring in the right grocery stores (lately) to find something new to me. I taught a college course one year about exotic, tropical, and world foods and for a fun assignnent challenged the class to find, research, and prepare for eating something that fullfilled the assignnent. It was a night class, so conducive to sharing a little meal.

What fun! I had never tasted starfruit until that night....delicious. Students sleuthed out really neat grains, spices, fruits and vegetables. Luckily, our little city was multi-cultural....and larger cities very close by.

grape-apple? bought a small package of 3 at wal mart...neither dh or I could really detect a grapey flavor...med to smaller apple...crisp, though...

I can't remember the name of the fruit. It was on the buffet at a Chinese Restaurant. It is small and looks like a white grape. While I was looking at it a lady told me that they were delicious and that I should try it. I did and loved it! I am still trying to find out what it is called and where I can find them.
