I know that it sounds gross, but I've been saving some really great looking cow skulls with horns for just that reason.
I also bought some Impala and Springbok skulls with horns last year for the same reason.
I just haven't got around to it and I actually forgot about doing it!

Along the same irreverent lines, I pot in unique things. Anyone else?

Do it when I get them so they don't get disturbed. I like unique displays in my home and office. I have done Encyclia's for dinner parties in individual coconuts with the place setting, mounted on a tumble weed, lunch box, pencil holder cups. Make my own plastic baskets. Have a SB about to bloom in some fancy file box from the Container Store. Love that place! . Give me a drill and an x-acto knife.... off I go..

Clara, I think they are very nice, just can't figure out the fish bowl. Do you have it just sunk in the water? Or is it in another compartment?

Several ways to do the fish bowl...

1) cut the flowers and stick them under a piece of smashed pot rim. I think that was the photo you saw, can't remember. I do new displays every other week. The fish like to hide in the flowers.

2) The fish bowl is not round. The back is flat to accommodate 2 fish bowls back to back. It ends up making 1 round fish bowl when put together.. Yes compartmented. Even in person, people can't quite sort it out. Love my fishies too, wouldn't want to hurt them with fertiliser

3) When I have no blooms I buy silk blooms and stick them in. They make some excellent fakies these days!

And here I thought myself clever for mounting my mini Angraecum on the outside of a hanging pot! Incidentally, I believe it's in Eric Hansen's book Orchid Fever, some orchids were once sold mounted on skulls as a way to highlight the exotic and high-risk work of the orchid hunters. Another book I was reading recently showed several orchids mounted on a clay pipe (not the kind for smoking, the other kind), boulders and large bits of pumice. I once tried mounting a phal on a sea sponge. Didn't take.

You've inspired me! Put these babies horizontal, fill'em with sphag, and plant orchids in there.

These are DH's shark jaws from way back before anyone knew they were endangered.

A number of years ago I saw pics of a plant planted in a pair of stillettos. I'm pretty sure I saw it on this forum too.

The shark jaws might would be interesting.

My sister lives close to Bayou Manchac and she is always getting very nice pieces of drift wood. She treasures them too much to share with me:( She has a piece that stands about 8 feet tall!

The skull is very cool, Richard! What type of skull is it?

I've never used a skull as a mount though I did use a deer skull as a home for a garter snake I had once. he liked to curl up inside the cranium.

I just picked up these little white vynal coated baskets at the Dollar Tree and thought they would make good hanging baskets for my orchids. Hey.....it is mounted in cork(s):)

Ebbykay, I've been getting my mom and her friends to save their wine corks for me for that exact purpose!

Now, I am walking around and digging in the sheds trying to find stuff! I found a brass fret work letter holder that is just perfect! Gently pulled some roots through the holes and filled the underside with spag. Made an s hook and hung it from the lattice of my deck.

I have tons of horse shoes.....hmmmmmmm....not my style.
