Help me decide if my island pendant lights need to be moved back

Please take a look at the pictures and give me your opinion on whether the pendant lights should be moved back. If yes, by how much? I'm also thinking of having the middle one moved back to be in line with the outer two instead of following the curve of the island. I have two recessed lights over the island, as well. Thank you!!!!

I think the key to making the right decision of where to hang the pendants depends on how you will use the island. What will you do at the island and where will you stand or sit? You want to light the area you're working on and not have a shadow over your space. More into the middle of the island may work better.

It now looks that if people are sitting to eat at the counter, the pendants lights might cause head shadows on plates.

Because it appears that the curved line of globes is also viewed from a side entry point into the kitchen, my choice would be to hang them in a straight line with the line centered (or an inch or so forward of center) over the depth of the island.

Well, it sounds like schoolhouse pendant wins!! Definitely in pewter? Is brushed nickel ok? (one manufacturer I'm looking at only offers that.) Faucet is chrome but it's the only chrome thing in the room, so that shouldn't make a difference, right? Would the brush nickel coordinate well enough with the appliances? I'd think so, but I'm no finish expert. EEEEE I'm getting so excited! I ordered all the appliances yesterday, should be in in 10 days! And my contractor just sent me a picture of the island in with the new floor!

Thanks a2gemini for your help. I would like to find a pendant for over the sink, but maybe just that one for the peninsula area. As per the island, we are considering a Modere-aire hood which will have lights (halogen I think). The hood look we are considering is posted below. However, the colour will likely be white and trim will be brushed steel (not the copper in the picture). Given this hood is large, perhaps we should do two pendants over the island? What do you and others think about the switch for the lights in the dining room? In other words when we leave the kitchen and go to the dining room, do you think we could have a switch on the back of the peninsula? How far away should the pots lights be from the wall? The i-joist are quite wide open with no plumbing above so we should not be too limited. Thanks! BTW our ceilings are only 8 feet, so the not at all like the image posted!! There is no rule as to how many pendants you should have . I would suggest first finding the pendant that you like and then decide depending on the pendant chosen. Question is why do you think you need brass lamps ? What is the overall design of your home ? I would not do a pendant in this kitchen, you wont get the impact because you can only do one and it cannot be large or it would look out of place over the counter top. another factor is your ceiling height, which I assume to be 8ft, this means a large pendant really wont work as you will not get much cord drop. I know you are looking for pretty here, I get that, but this room will change a lot once the wall goes back in and the counter is placed. if i was you I would have them center an electrical box where you want the pendant on the idea that they can come back in and change it to a remodel pot if you decide against it.

your kitchen looks beeeeeoootiful!!

personally, I would put the pendents over the center of the island, in a straight line. That way, it would illuminate both sides equally and not cause any shadows.

Let me clarify a bit...

The island will be for gathering, eating, kids doing homework, etc. There's a second island closer to the range that will serve as a food prep station. I already have two recessed lights over the center of the island in question. The pendant lights are more or less decorative, but they do provide a nice amount of light. Anyway, it was my lighting guy who suggested the whole curved positioning of the pendants. It sounded like a clever idea at the time, but it looks sorta strange now that it's installed. Maybe it seems awkward because I've never seen pendants arranged like that. Maybe there's a reason they're not arranged like that...

teedup1, you're absolutely right about the head shadow on plates. That will definately be a problem with the current placement.

You wonderful people have confirmed my gut instinct! I'm gonna move them back and probably alighn them in straight line. Now I've gotta break the news to my builder!!
