Lampshade help

I have a couple of 40-year-old brass Stiffel-like lamps and have been looking for new shades with no luck. Do I need to just toss them and get new? They came with tall drum shades that were replaced with more of a flared shape that I never really cared for but was the best I could do at the time. The lining has ripped, so I need to get replacements. I'm thinking they're so out that it's impossible to find anything that fits or updates them, if that's even possible. The bases are 23 and 25 inches tall and skinny.

Check out lampsplus.com they have tons of shades in many different shapes and sizes. I always like the look of drum or tapered drum shades. I think they cast the light around a room better than most other styles.

I've replaced 40 yr old Stiffel lampshades with lakeshorestudios.com shades.

Nope Marigene, all you need is an up to date shade to make the world of difference in a lamp. To me the lamp itself never goes out of style, just needs the latest in shade shapes. Artlover is right. A bit larger one would work better too. If you can't find one in the right color you can either cover it or buy a blank adhesive shade made to recover. Share pix when you are done please.

Hi! I just wanted yall to know I wasn't fishing for compliments or anything.....the more I look at professional interiors the more insecure I feel about my abilities to create a beautiful & comfy space. This room has ended up being "left overs" from a bigger house & I am really having a hard time pulling it together. I don't know if I am going for soft, neutral & serene or more dressy classic & a little bold????? So, it seems it is mixed about light/dark on the lamps?? Chandelier is too small but I am willing to live with it. I have never had crystals hanging & I love the way they look lit up. Change the shades???? Red, I will take a pic of 2 skinny buffet lamps I have in my DR tomorrow & see what yall think. Musical lamps at my house right now!! Yes, PB is very simliar to WT - I used PB on all my trim in my previous house & foyer & hall. Lovely color and your den looks gorgeous. You have so many beautiful pieces of furniture. Oh, and I saw your post about which picture & agree about the darling portrait of your daughter - esp. since your mother did it. It does not get any more special than that:) Shee, the 2 bird plaques I got at an antique shop. Your entry is really pulling together. I like very much your new lamps & bunny planter. Good job, girl:) Valzone, I would love to see your lamp. I really should have taken a pic of the shade they had on this one - it was HUMONGOUS(spel??)) I think I am going to look at Aidan Gray lamps to get some ideas, too. I have moved so much stuff around in here - you should see all the holes in the walls!! Until I found this forum - I didn't really think as much about my home decor. Good & bad. Smiles:)

Wow thanks for these great thoughts. Apple Pie, I have thought it may be my best bet to find another spot for them. I had been moving them around and just got tickled at seeming them on the ledges and hoped it could work. You may be right though. Chijim, what a novel idea...I didn't even know I could get a custom lampshade. This would also address the issue of finding just the right texture and color. I'll have to see what's available in my town as far as this goes. Jay, I love the idea of a rectangle. The drum shade just didn't feel suitable for the lamp style, but I think the rectangular shape is much suitable to the design of the lamp and the columns themselves. That one is 14" wide, which wouldn't fit, but I am going to google for narrower ones now and see what I come up with. Thanks again!

If you can find a lampshade store in your area, it's best to take the lamp with you and try them on....we have one in our area that's stacked to the rafters with shades and they are very accommodating...it makes a world of difference to actually see the shade on the lamp.

I'm with Annie.

It is very difficult to buy lampshades unless you have the lamp in hand, including the harp and a bulb, and can stand it up on a table, plugged in, and try things. Good lamp and lighting stores are set up for this.

There are so many subtle differences among shades that you really can't tell which ones will be best until you see the whole business set up and lit. I was in the business for many years, and I can't do it with any guarantee.

There are materials, quality of construction, overall height and width, angle from top to bottom, placement of the frame and attachment ring, surface texture, balance and appropriateness with the lamp base, and effect of color and fabric on the light it gives - and all those things have to be considered.

I know I am a broken record on this subject, but in my view, the three most effective ways to spoil a good room scheme are:
1. cheap picture framing,
2. low-quality paint, and
3. cheap or badly matched lampshades.
In the overall budget for your home, none of those details is very expensive when you consider their effect.
