Need opinion os bedroom closets.

Hi, in our 1940's new house, the closets are a little hard to use, specially in one of the rooms, and we are considering adding a sliding closet door for easier access.
As you can see in the pictures, one of room shas a very small closet and in an odd shape. The other closet in other room is wider, but hard reach clothes on the corners once it's full of hangers.

Ideas to make it all more accessible? We thought about double sliding doors. Do you think it would hurt the "old house integrity"? Any other ideas?

I had a similar problem in my 1937 colonial. The closets were wide but not deep enough to put a hanger in. They had colliapsible hooks that hung on the back wall. The closets were the same in both 2nd & 3rd bedrooms. I removed the closet doors and the moldings, had the closets built out into the room about a foot. Your closets may be deep enough as they are.
We made the closet door opening big enough for sliding doors. The rooms are so small I didn't want to waste the space for regular doors. I took the 2 original closet doors and converted them to sliders for 1 closet. Left the doorknob rosettes on them so act as those little round finger pulls you see on sliding doors. Replicated or re-used as much as I could the molding that was on the original closet. For the 3rd room, I went to restore and for about $30 got 2 more doors (lucky me, they were already sliders so no patch where the hinges came off!) that unless you look really close (the panel trim on the doors is slightly different) they appear to be original to the house. I'm really thrilled the way they both came out and I'm pretty sure no one would know the difference. I'm on my LT and I don't have a pic to post.
I'll see if I have one on my desktop and post later.

I need to change my response. I could have sworn that our master closet was the same color as the MB (SW Blonde) and I know that it was supposed to be, but today I looked at the closet and the walls and ceiling are both SW Dover White! My husband changed a lot of the paint colors on his own (GRRR!--he's afraid of color) and this is one change that I missed, but after thinking about it I'm glad that it is light color as we only have one small window in the closet so it would have been dark. We have 3 other walk-in closets and they all have SW Dover White walls and ceilings and don't match the rooms that they are attached to.

Well, there's always a door mural if you want to have some fun. There's another "door" thread going on here. Someone posted this. There are hundreds of them out there....something for everyone! Certainly you have more options with the queen....you're smart to be getting this down on paper. No, you won't have a lot of room on one side but ??? it's all priorities. We had one bedroom that was only 10' wide with a queen and nightstands. We didn't have to get to the bathroom that way but we did to access a closet next to the bed....about 2'.5" on each side to the walls.....close. A lot of people wouldn't want that but we were cool with it.... The family that bought the house from us decided to keep their king bed (he's 6'6") They must be turning sideways to squeeze by that bed! There's no right or wrong here. You have a couple of options and it's just a matter of your preferences.

When you build with the WOW and 4k square feet, (which sounds like a lot but is not ) . It is NOT when you give starring role /NEARLY five hundred sq ft of it to a great room in front of the entry. Another couple hundred to a "hearth" area ......and what will happen here is nobody will actually gather in the great room, the fire will be the traffic stopper. Then you give each of three bedrooms a "walk in " closet. etc Result? you are left with the master suite that seems ( is) out of scale to the wow in the middle. Also small scale kid/guest bedrooms. The only answer to this plan is to lose a chunk of the "covered porch" square off the kitchen corner, bump the master suite to flush with the kitchen exterior wall.Change the window, to two on the covered porch wall and center the bed between. Plan to lose the tub for a decent shower too. Adjust bath and closet , center the entry to those with a right and left side for each. Anything else requires a total overhaul of the plan. That would mean a second story with two beds and baths on a second floor. ..........a completely different house. But this much under roof on one floor, with allocation to functions as is ? Yup......this is what you get Bump the master suite....or build something else.. ( square off that breakfast nook in any scenario.)

That layout sounds kind of like what the 2 bedroom units in the HOA I lived in when we were still in SoCal was like...The vanity area of the bathroom had a closet facing the vanity/sink side that was the two sliding door type, with a door to the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom to the right (left if you're coming in the door from the master bedroom) and a door to the master bedroom on the left (right if you're coming in from the toilet/tub+shower part of the bathroom) - another double door slider closet was in the master bedroom. They almost always painted all of the walls, the closet doors, and the doors in/out of each space the same color as the master bedroom because it was adjoining. The smaller bedroom accessed the bathroom through another door off the upstairs hallway, so sometimes that smaller bedroom would be painted a different color but not always. White (the same one as was used elsewhere) was a popular and sensible choice, you can always add color with accessories and art! White bedding can start to look dingy if you don't wash it in hot water (occasionally adding bleach to go into the load while it's running), so think about how much 'maintenance' you're willing to do before buying all the bedding in white (sheets and pillowcases in white aren't as big of a deal because you typically have 'decorative' pillows and a comforter/duvet covering them when you get the bed made each day). :) When we had the house on the market the 'stager' had us buy one of those cheap bed-in-a-bag comforter/shams/decorative throw pillow sets in white with a little area of patterned print down at the part that goes on the foot of the bed, which I thought was totally impractical given that our dog loves being on the bed and washing the thing would have made the fiberfill migrate around so it would be lumpy when it went back on the bed! At least the place sold in less than a month after being listed so we didn't have to worry about it for very long. :P

It's hard to tell from the first picture what the exact closet shape is, so I can't help a lot. As it looks to me though, I'd use that upper back area for long-term storage (suitcases, out of season clothing) and put a hanging rod in the lower area.

The other closet is exactly like the closets in my old home. We solved the wide but shallow problem by making them into mini walk-in closets. I posted this diagram on another thread awhile ago about organizing closets.

This is a diagram of our one very wide and shallow closet. We hung double rods perpendicular to the door on the sides and parallel to the door in the middle. It was wide enough to still be able to get to the side clothes with clothing in the middle. Our other closets were not as wide, so we just hung the double rods perpendicular to the door.

Top view then side view. Blue lines are hanging rods and shelves.

If you put the shelves at about 42" and 84"' you can easily reach to hang clothes on the top rods. Or just have a small stool handy. Or whoever is taller gets the top rows. :)

The long hanging side we hung at about 6'. There's still some room on the floor underneath for a laundry basket for dirty clothes.

We used wire shelves and the metal wall-mounted rods. You just need to find the stud and attach it all the way up. It's fairly easy. And then you can move shelves as needed and cut the wire shelves and rods to size. It's pretty inexpensive too! We installed these all the way to ceiling to maximize storage space.
