More banks of drawers than double door cabinets: wise or foolish?
Comments (47)Thanks - It's funny on the peg board. These ARE new, soft-close cabinets but part of my rationale to the pegs is "a place for everything and everything a place." My daughters have emptying the dishwasher as one of their chores (when we get one back after the remodel - now it's all by hand and they HATE that!) - if we don't use pegs, I'm afraid that a nicely organized system will disintegrate into a randomly piled mess, especially since one is envisioned for Tupperware. The girls have to take a trash-free lunch every day so there is LOTS of use for the little tupperware containers and lids. We will have banks of 27" drawers (under the microwave), 36" drawers under the (oven), 33" drawers (under the island), 24" drawers and then two sets of 21" drawers. I was thinking TWO peg sets - one for the 33" (pyrex, bowls, etc.; would have to cut the 36") and one for the 27" (Tupperware, would have to cut the 30") All the rest would be completely open. Does anyone think this makes sense? On the second issue, I hear you on the knife block. I'm still going to order it in the 18 and will have hubby fit a piece beside it if it slides around. We have a rather rag tag-looking set of knives and an inexpensive knife block now so no need to have that sitting on my pretty granite countertops. Any other tips before we order (tomorrow!) :-) Thanks!...See MoreFeeling foolish - probably going to repaint house
Comments (37)Sorry to hear about your disappointment with your paint, especially after all the research that you put into it! I am agreeing with a couple of points people brought up, maybe it was in covering up the blue, maybe it is in your particular lighting and structure, maybe the mix is wrong. I have SM Ivoire throughout our main living area and it is just as ou described, creamy yellow with apricot undertones, not a hint of green. Somebody brought up the point that colors do vary room to room, house to house so maybe that is what you are doing here. In that case, not so much of a "mistake" on your part, but a lovely color that doesn't quite work for you. Similar to how a bright yellow sweater looks great on my friend, but washes me out. Good look in finding a new color!...See MoreBuying used furniture for second home--and repainting
Comments (26)Loves2read, funny that the Florida Cl seems better than your Dallas CL. I found the opposite, with much better CL options here in Milwaukee vs Florida. Maybe because there is such old stock here. Most of Florida seems to have been populated after the 60's, and I am not too keen on the quality of recently made furniture. I'd rather rehab something solid wood. My needs are unique, though: dirt cheap but great potential. And I have time to search out pieces and to rehab them. I just finished a $7 Goodwill chair that started like this and now is this I am learning to sew and upholster practicing on the guest rooms, ha. The chair will go in the twin bedroom for which I just found those wicker headboards. I have miles of the red fabric ($1/yd) for bedskirts and scored 2 new oatmeal linen Shabby Chic duvets at Goodwill into which I'm slipping clearance Kohl's $16 quilts. I have a free dresser that needs painting, and some Goodwill wicker lamps. Some CL desks and tables, and a little yardsale dhurrie rug. Sew up some pillows. DH and I will make artwork - and I use the term loosely. Voila! One room done. I found it helps to let a vision evolve in your head for each room. I go nowhere now without my notepad filled with fabric scraps, paint colors and dimensions....See MoreRewarding the foolish ...
Comments (29)"And I know people who have faced those things despite being financially prudent and well disciplined. " Really doubtful. The number of folks hit by lighting every year is VERY well known. A whole lot of 'living beyond your means' and 'I want it NOW' with a decent dose of gaming the system. 'No docs' loans originated with large down payments. When you walk in with 50%+ equity in cash, lenders dis not need to look that hard. Extending the same privileges to 10% or 20% down customers is ASKING to get ripped off. 'Interest only loans' started in a similar way. Purchasers had large performing investments, and did not want to liquidate them and tie money up in a house. When you are making upwards of 15% on your money, paying down an 8% loan with that money is just foolish. If your yield starts to fall it is time to move some funds around. It is not a method to let you purchase a house you otherwise cannot afford, assuming it will increase in value and you will get out from under the debt before it crushes you. Here is some BIG news. RE does NOT always increase in value. Items completely beyond your control can cause the value to actually DECREASE. Those with a solid financial base weather the storm. The others go looking to get someone else to pay for their losses....See Moreronbre
