Valentine's Day--what kinda chocolate do you like?

See's is my favorite, but I also like Dove.

Got my neighbor a heart with Frango chocolate mints at Macy's today. Don't know if those are any good. (Oh and by the way, they talk about big markdowns in the dept. stores, but I really didn't see any big markdowns. Just the stuff you don't want.)

Godiva is ok.

My younger sister LOVES Frango Chocolate Mints. Now that the Macys is selling them here, I buy them for her for a Christmas treat. She fell in love with them when Marshall Fields sold them in Chicago. Turns out, they originated in Seattle, then Fields sold them for years, and now the Macys sells them, after buying out Marshall Fields.

I bought a sack of Dove milk chocolate hearts the other day, and my DD and I have been doing away with them. They are so smooth! Of course, See's is certainly wonderful too, but I have to go all the way to the mall to buy those! I love their Nuts and Chews.

Any chocolate that I can fit in my mouth works for me.
Love the stuff.
When I grew up in Portland Oregon, Van Dynes was a favorite candy of choice. I love just smelling the goodies when I walked by.

BD, I think they are very easy to make. Here is the recipe I've used a bunch of times for the past decade or two, I don't even remember where I got it. I don't always dip them in the chocolate coating, sometimes I just roll the chilled truffles in chopped nuts or chocolate sprinkles or crushed peppermint candy or powdered sugar or cocoa powder or whatever suits me at the moment. TRUFFLES 2 packages (12 ounces each) semisweet chocolate chips 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 3 tablespoons instant coffee granules 2 teaspoons water 1 pound dark chocolate candy coating, coarsely chopped White candy coating, optional In a microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Add the cream cheese, coffee and water, mix until well blended. Chill until firm enough to shape. Shape into 1-in. balls and place on waxed paper-lined baking sheet. Chill for 1-2 hours or until firm. In a microwave, melt chocolate coating; stir until smooth. Dip balls in chocolate; allow excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; let stand until set. Melt white coating and drizzle over truffles if desired. Yield: about 5-1/2 dozen. I know there's a recipe for Oreo Truffles too, the girls loved those. I think it came from Sue (cookingrvc), but I'm not sure, this one came right off the Kraft Foods website! Oreo Truffles 1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened 1 pkg. (1 lb. 2 oz.) OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 4-1/4 cups), divided 2 pkg. (8 squares each) BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate, melted MIX cream cheese and 3 cups cookie crumbs until well blended. SHAPE into 48 (1-inch) balls. Dip in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs. REFRIGERATE 1 hour or until firm. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator. I've been thinking, actually, that I haven't made Ann T's graham chewies in quite a long time and I really like those a lot... Annie

We don't really celebrate Valentine's Day. I don't care for the overly sentimental cards and it's hard to enjoy roses or other flowers if you know they've jacked the price up. We didn't even celebrate it when we were newlyweds. But...my DH's car died and after calculating the cost of repair combined with the 150,000 miles on it we opted to buy a new car. So yesterday we decided to take a nice drive into the country and made reservations at a great little pub, restaurant and brewery. It was thoroughly enjoyable and neither of us mentioned the 'Valentine' word.

This is my recipe and I make them often during the winter. I use Kosher gelatin which I buy from a company in New York in bulk. VERY $$$ but for my business it has to be certified Kosher or I can't sell it. Butter, for greasing & confectioners' sugar, for coating 2 tablespoons gelatin 1/2 cup cold water 2 cups granulated sugar 3/4 cup boiling water 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1. Butter an 8x8-inch square baking dish. Line with waxed paper, then butter waxed paper, and lightly coat with confectioners' sugar. 2. Disolve gelatin in cold water, in the bowl of a stand mixer, using whisk attachment. 3. In a large saucepan, over medium high heat, whisk together granulated sugar, boiling water and salt; bring to a boil, whisking frequently. Stop whisking, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until a thermometer reads 236 degrees F. 4. Pour syrup slowly over gelatin. Add vanilla extract, and beat on medium speed, for 20 minutes, or until thick and cool. 5. Butter a spatula, and scrape marshmallow cream into prepared dish; smooth the surface. Freeze overnight, then remove waxed paper from dish, lifting out marshmallow. Peel waxed paper off, then cut into squares, on a cutting board, using a buttered-sharp knife. Lightly dust marshmallows with additional confectioners' sugar. 6. Makes 36 mallows (This depends on how big you cut them) I've used other flavors and dipped them in chocolate 24 hours after they've set even when they've been covered with sugar. As they dry u the sugar absorbs and creates a kind of skin. The chocolate sticks fine to that.

What a nice surprise to open my package and find Rezha Macedonian pepper. I am going to grow that along with Vesna Elephant pepper. They are both embroidered with jalapeno type striations. I want to see how they differ. There are several things I've wanted to try, like Empress of India nasturtiums and some I need to replace since moving, like pink monarda. I don't care for most boxed chocolates.Maybe I've never had great ones? Brachs etc are all we usually have here.
I LOVE the chocolate turtles and plain Hershey bars though! LOL

Trinitytx!! I grew up there too and we always got Van Dynes in our Christmas stockings. I don't think I've ever tasted chocolate as good, and believe me, I've had a lot. My mom was sooooo disappointed when they sold out, and so were we.

I just remembered: they used to make (some?) of our Campfire Girls candy too--those mint patties were the best! Thanks for the memory.

I like Fannie May.. those green minty chocolates especially. Any kind of good quality chocolate really.

I am currently on a diet... so none for me this year.

My favorite is Dove Milk Chocolate. In a pinch, I would settle for See's Butterscotch Squares...but only in a pinch. LOL

Lindt...the white on white truffles.

I used to like Godiva, and got them at discount when Campbell Soup was a client.

I think Campbell still owns Godiva.

I love a Whitman's sampler. Every piece of candy is different, fun. I get one every VD from my honey. He also gives a box to each of our two daughters. I share mine with him, he's that good!

ANY! Though my absolute favorite is a box of Ferrero Rocher. I bought my son a large Ghirardelli chocolate bar with mint filling. That is his favorite and DH likes any dark chocolate that is 70% or more cocoa so got him one of those.

If you are ever in San Francisco you should go to Ghirardelli Square and visit the Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Manufactory.

Any kind of dark chocolate. I love the chocolate with sea salt and I have had dark chocolate laced with hot chili's which is wonderful tasting.

My favourite Valentine treat is a dark chocolate covered marshmallow heart.

Well...since I can't get my hands on a REAL LIVE CARMEL bar by Cadbury...(the ones I find here are made in the states...YUK)...I'm always willing for Lindt Truffles...Milk Chocolate or Peanut Butter...I've been having awful cravings lately...probably cause I bought my hubster a box of Turtles and it's been sitting in my office since my mega shopping trip at Walmart a couple of weeks ago...LOL

Well some knows how crazy I was over choc cover cherries.Just ask jenni.It would be nothing for me to open a box and have it gone it mins.But When they had to place the stint in my heart I gave up the choc.But when I see it in the stores its hard to not just get me a box and think just one box want hurt me.But I know it would get me started again and I would keep going back getting several boxes.So I have been good and I just let it pass.I do snick in some M&M's now and then.
Now this makes me want and I will crave the choc cover cherries.The heart dr said choc or caffine makes my heart race.

This house is never without Dove's Dark Chocolate. At this very moment there are 3 bags on hand. One of them is Dark with Almonds.

Years ago when we lived near Cleveland, Ohio, we indulged in Faroh's Fine Chocolates every chance we got. Their french chocolates were to die for! Anybody know if Faroh's is still around?

I'm not supposed to eat chocolate because I'm diabetic. However, I am addicted to it and if it's in the house I eat it. Hubby ALWAYS buys it. My favorite is Cella's Chocolate Covered Cherries. There is a box on hubby's dresser right now. :(

I did a little tally.

The leaders were dark, Lindt, and Dove. Other than those, the votes were all over the place. There's a lot of good chocolate out there.

Oh my gosh....any kind..even the cheapest from the dollar stores!..BUT...if you REALLY want to splurge and have something really out of this world try Norman Love chocolates. My husband got me a SMALL box for Valentine's one day and I can't even begin to explain how delicious they were...unique tastes, smooth, rich melt-in-your-mouth to die for chocolate! Very expensive but worth it if you want something VERY special!
