Look who came to dinner!!!

They arrived on Friday night! We had a lovely dinner of Sue's Roadhouse Ribs, Potato Gratin and Roasted Beets (recipe posted on the "new recipe" thread).

We built a fire and sat out in the back yard gabbing and drinking wine. It was a lovely night!

Breakfast was a Potato Florentine Strata along with Glazed Lemon Sour Cream Cake and home canned pears that Sherry brought.

Sherry also gifted me with a quart of her home canned peaches, an assortment of Penzey's spices, a bag of dried cherries and some Michigan Maple Syrup!

Saturday we went to the Minnesota State Fair. It was lovely for the first couple of hours, but then the crowds became unbearable so we only stayed about 3-1/2 hours. Totally made me remember why I don't go to the fair! LOL But it was fun, nonetheless.

Made Taco Salads for dinner and then went out and had another fire....oh...and more wine!

Yesterday we went to the historic town of Stillwater, MN. It lies on the banks of the St. Croix River and there are lots of fun shops, antique stores, a winery and lots of good restaurants.

Along the way we stopped at a scenic overlook and took in the beauty of the river valley. Just after taking these photos a huge Bald Eagle flew right above our heads....he was breathtaking!

In Stillwater, we did some antique shopping, visited a couple of great art galleries, went to the winery and did some sampling of the local wines, took a walk along the riverfront, and watched the lift bridge go up and let the very large boats pass.

We had dinner at a restaurant called The Dock Cafe, and sat ouside overlooking the water. The food was good, but not phenomenal, we didn't take any photos of it.

Here are the four of us. It was a lovely day. We ended the evening on my front porch with candles lit and yes....another two bottles of wine! LOL

It was a really fun time, and Sherry, Roger and Dexter left this morning, heading for the Black Hills!

Oh how fun! The weather was perfect for the Fair.....maybe that's why so many others showed up. Did you treat yourself to any of the traditional Fair food. Did you show Sherry the butterheads in the Dairy Building???

How wonderful it all sounds. Is this the first meeting of you and Sherry and the DH's?

I love that sitting around a campfire and drinking wine activity. LOL That's what we did last night until it starting raining.

Sounds like a good time was had by all.

Yes i did get bit by a Copper Head about two years ago working on some landscape lighting with my dog Adolf. Never heard of a dry pit viper bite, and doubt that a snake has that ability, at least not pit vipers. Certainly did not work that way for me or Adolf. Adolf got the worse of it taking a bite on his muzzle which caused a lot of swelling and blocking his airway. Anyway we are just fine. Cannot say the same for the snake. Last time I remember seeing that snake he was going in two different directions at the same time when Adolf bit him in half and slung the two pieces all over the yard. Funny part it was the second time I have been bitten by poisonous snake. First time I was 14 or 15 walking down a creek bank and stepped on it, an Cotton Mouth. That one put me in the hospital a couple of days. Thought I was going to loose my leg at the time.

BN was kind enough to fill in the diet details for you. You'll, however, typically see backyard Cooper's shopping the feathered selection. I'd wager that fox squirrel was a bit out of range mass-wise for a Coop (or at its utmost upper limit), and Coops are so adept at snagging birds (which are a less-risky attempt for the hawk in the first place). Well, looks like I need Victoria advice from Jessy and Ann. :) I am headed there next summer, for the start of another epic bicycle tour. Jessy, where did you stay? I will fly to Seattle, and then see about how to get up to Canada. Haven't done all the research yet. I need to figure out, where to ship my bike, as flying it is getting kind of spensive. Then I will tramp to the same little most northern town in the US, and cross over on my bike. Eventually I will ride my bike south, along the Pacific coast. But my must see place is Butchart Gardens, which is why I will start the trip earlier than the others, that will ride the same route. Moni

Susan, the bunny was dead when I saw it. I think the falcon was just holding it down in a stable place until it died. I would imagine it would be tough to fly around with a bunny flailing its legs. Why he chose a low hedge next to a busy building is beyond all of us but word got out quickly and people came from all around to see him. I think he got more attention than when Prince Andrew came to visit a year or so ago. But not as much as when the Stanley Cup was here three years ago. Wow! Such a great weekend, filled with wonderful food, friends and lots of activities. It would pay to live close enough to attend! I'm jealous. :)

I'm glad you had such a good time. I knew Sherry and Roger were heading your way. We had dinner together on Tuesday evening and they were headed up through the UP on Wednesday.

All the food sounds great but I'd bet you had the most fun just sittin' around the fire....

Unfortunately we couldn't get NEAR many of the buildings or the concessions. Seriously....the lines for even the most awful of fair foods were 30-40 people long! Couldn't get near the dairy building so we missed that. We did get into the creative arts exhibit, that was cool. The International Market was a$$hole to belly button, so we didn't stay in there very long. Earlier in the day we did take a gondola ride over the crowds. And we watched a guy do chainsaw sculpture, that was interesting.

Karen, I met Sherry several years ago (6 maybe?). I then met Roger a couple of years ago when we all went to Annie's. Tim had never met either of them. I think he had only met Peppi up until now.

We had so much fun I can't wait to make another trip to Michigan!

LOL, yes, I've spent a few days with Linda too! (grin) I even remember some of them. You betcha.

It looks like a great time, Linda. Elery says Minnesota is beautiful, his brother used to live in St. Paul.

Looks like you had a great time and I wish I could be there too. I love Stillwater and the river.

Wow, that whole weekend sounds great. You had good company, good entertainment and booze! Nothing to complain about. Tim and Linda are great people. So glad you shared the visit and the pix Linda.

I can't believe it's coming up on three years since Pigeon Forge. A great time for sure!

Sherry and Roger, hope y'all have a great time in the Hills. I wish I knew you were headed that way so I could have given you a few tips for your trip. I've had family out there for many years.

Wow, it's hard to believe it's been 3 years! I think we need to do another pajama party!

We'll just call last weekend a "mini pajama party". At least there were PJ's involved! Hahahaha!
