Ok I hate to say this but surely someone else will benifit from the thrashing I'm about to receive......
Sharp shinned ? why? I thought the tail was too long.

Hi Bob,

This bird has pale yellow eyes and he is brown with brown streaks on underparts this is how look young accipiters. Adult are blue-gray on upperparts and reddish on underparts with red eyes (Goshawk have pale gray underparts).

Shap-shinned Hawk :

-First : look at the streaking of the breast, coarse dense brown streaks, thin and droplet like on Cooper Hawk.

-Second : see the well rounded head on picture 1. Cooper Hawk have an axe like head.

-Third : look at the nice proportional size of the tail with the entire bird's body. A Cooper Hawk has a tail " too " long.

-Fourth : this bird does not have the fierce look of a Cooper Hawk (the skull of a Cooper must be different above the eye to create this fierce look).

Those were the points I use to id this Hawk.

Sharp-shinneds also have very little neck, and with the shorter tail appear less long and lanky than Coopers. And the bit about the fierce look-I've heard of references to Sharp-shinned having a 'startled' look, and that's due to the small head size with the proportionate large hawk eye (the second photo shows this well).

That I have discovered. and its really good to have joined such a community. "Thrashed" is derived from W.C. Fields quote "Go away, kid, ya bug me." I know you guys wouldn't actually belittle me but in exchange for the knowledge, its the least I can do to try to make you smile.
My mentor, here in Chattanooga just laughs at me when he says "Oh there's a brown-winged-spawrenich" and I reply "suuuurrrreee it is...."
Thanks for all the help, and Dave, I agree, Great photos!!

Finally, I remembered that I did have pictures of a young Cooper's on the web and am posting it for a comparision of with Dave's hawk. Keep in mind, however, the this is a picture of a Cooper's a few weeks after fledging so he's not as filled out as Dave's hawk.
