look who showed up for breakfast and stayed for lunch

activity has been slow enough here that one sighting is a big deal. I have only had one brief sighting of an adult male ruby in the past 2 weeks. I still see a female 2 or 3 times a week for a single brief visit.

I first saw this one this morning at about 10 am. I change my nectar every 3rd day, and was out of sugar this morning. I went and bought some, (that's 15# now this season, frank) ;-) and did the clean and fill ritual, and came inside to have lunch, then post up with the camera. he's been back twice that I've seen, and I made these images on the second visit.

I had the camera all set with no flash, but the battery-saving feature shut the camera off while waiting. when he showed up and I turned the camera on, the flash fired automatically. after the bird perched, he saw the flash on the 2nd picture, and leaned way in to get a good look at me in the 3rd picture.

what a welcome visitor! thought I'd make him famous and share.

Crazy, busy weekend here again due to many things. Thanks for all the cool and supportive responses. All of the troops need those no matter the country. Justin knows about all y'all and as always asked what's up with your foodie/cooking friends....way before his military thing. We were talking today at the lake and he thinks he was...yikes.. 13 or 14 when he first tried Sharon's pickles from a swap years ago. Man time flies! Thanks again everyone but this guy has to get to hit the hay so to speak. Justin and his group got the best of me at the lake today. OY! I'm starting to feel my age.....LOL! David

I think it's important not to make assumptions about what people should be able to do or not do at a certain age, whether they're 16 or 6 months. I do understand your feelings. My daughter has learning disabilities and has been learning how to cook for herself but sometimes she'll forget to turn the stove off. She put a plate in the microwave that shouldn't go there and it melted and also exploded food all over the inside. Nothing really awful but still it's a little scary leaving kids on their own when they just don't have those skills down yet. I have left mine alone and I was nervous the whole time but she did have one problem and she handled it perfectly. So I have to learn how to let go too. Anyway, I didn't mean to go on and on about that. I like the above writer's ideas of the frozen dinners. There are also microwavable pizzas that kids like. My SIL used to make sandwiches for a month at a time. She would make them, wrap them up individually and then return them to the bag the bread came in and refreeze them all. Her kids would take one out of the freezer in the morning and it would be ready to eat by lunchtime. Maybe you and your daughter could make some meals together before you go. At least make up a list of things she'd like to eat and start working a little bit at a time. One suggestion I remember from before was making sure you put a lable on each item frozen with cooking instructions on it. Maybe some suggestions of what needs to go with it, like salad or vegetable. If you get some canned fruit cocktail, you won't have to freeze it. Same with jarred spaghetti sauce (like Ragu or Prego). I hope all goes well. Congratulations on the new baby.

thank you all so much for taking the time to post. I have learned alot from you guys. Alot of you mentioned alarm clocks. We have clocks in the rooms, but not alarmed ones. So that's my next purchase. We do have the nice sheets, pillows, cleanliness, etc. I'm glad I mentioned bringing pets. I wanted to see how many of you would want that from a B&B. We have two saint bernards on the premises, and a guest with a dog, would just be mayhem, even if we did have ONE pet-friendly room. My dogs would know there's another dog here, and the other dog would know our dogs are here -- hence, barking, whining. Not fair to other guests. Flamingo - you are so right - can't please everyone! And, if I can do this, ANYONE can. But I think it takes two people and a girl to come in once a week just to clean bathrooms. B&B's seem to attract the nicest people of all ages. Very nice, Standard! I wish we had RT's here, along with our rufous & Anna's. They're all pretty wonderful tho, so I'm happy to have what we do.

sarah, I was holding the camera, and was seated about 8 feet from the feeder. I was indoors, looking through the window. the optics and zoom on the canon s1-is are great, but already I want more pixels. this one is 3.2 megapixels. I sure am having fun with it, though.
I hope my visitor is here again tomorrow!

funny, I've seen only females here in Baton Rouge...I guess the males are all hanging around further north! Good shots!

not yet, because he hasn't been around long enough to observe personal habits or traits, but I'm considering 'amos.' famous amos. the only one I'd named so far this year is twiggy, the slender female.

standard65: Good shots. Haven't seen a Ruby Throat since I was a kid back in Kansas! (We've gone through about 100 pounds so far and have one half empty 50 pound bag with another for backup!) If it's anything like last year, now that the Rufous have started showing up we should start getting real busy within the next week or so.
