Look who I had dinner with on Wednesday night.

Jessica and her husband, son #1 and her father spent a few days of their vacation in Victoria. I met up with them on Wednesday evening. Spent an hour or so with the family and then Jessica and I wandered off by ourselves.

Jessica requested Halibut Fish and Chips. So we ended up on a pier at a little place called Redfish, Bluefish. Just a little takeout place. Nothing fancy just really good food. The only place to sit was the edge of the pier. Thankfully it was a beautiful evening.

After dinner we strolled a little more stopping at Rogers Chocolates. Jessica picked up a box of her favourite Rogers Victoria Creams.

Jessica and I have been friends for a long time, chatting on IM and on the phone so it was really nice to be able to spend some "real" time together.

I heard about the visit..and she was so glad to be eating fish on the pier!

And I got to look at that lovely jar of jam and it is even more stunning in person!!

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!! I have tons of squash in the garden and was feeling lackluster about it until tonight. Sliced up crooknecks and zucchini thin, fried them in olive oil and sea salt until they were browned, and then spooned spaghetti sauce over them. I think its funny my bugs aren't eating any squash. They're eating all my tomatoes instead.

Raven, I finally remembered to pick up some asparagus! I'll have it tomorrow with something. Ellendi, tonight I just cooked it in a very basic way. I like having cold leftovers to put on a salad, in my green sludgies, soups, etc. One cup quinoa, rinsed and drained twice. Use a mesh strainer. Add one and a half cups water or broth to the pot with the quinoa, bring to a boil with the lid on....then turn heat down to simmer for ten minutes or so. Let sit for five minutes with the lid on after the heat is off. I also add it raw to any rice or mixed grains that I'm cooking. I even add it when I'm making pea or lentil soup! Always rinse it....it has a bitter taste otherwise.

Shirley, good for you for getting a leg up on the cooking. I need to start eating out of ours (leftovers), but I figure if we have a hurricane this summer, that food will come in handy to warm on the Coleman stove. So I'm hoarding it :-) Jasdip, you really are making good use out of that rhubarb. I've never had rhubarb cake. I like it stewed just about better than in pie. Man, it sure takes a lot of sugar! Your salad sounds delish! Georgysmom, hope you're as good on the course as you were the other day! That's going to be a really long, but fun, day. Mary, aha! When you say "hills" you really, really mean hills! Tennessee is a beautiful state. Thank you for the nice thoughts. Bengardening--that's one of the perks to working in the restaurant business. Leftovers rock!! Glenda, our watermelons in FL are ready at the end of May. This one came from Texas. I just picked a bad one--didn't have any yellow part from where it laid. Alisande, I tried sauteeing toufu once. I think I had the wrong grade or whatever it's called. It wasn't the firm kind. I must say it looks delicious--but not half as good as the broccoli. That sauce looks amazing!

Ann, I sent you an email a couple of weeks ago with some questions about Vancouver Island. I think I might have sent it to the wrong address, though. Anyway, we will be wandering up that way in the next couple of weeks and we were wondering if it is worth driving north of Victoria to Campbell River, and over to Gold River? Also, what about the west coast of the island? Or should we just spend more time in the San Juan Islands? We have 16 days, but will spend some of it in Seattle and a couple in Portland.

I can't beleive I haven't heard of Roger's chocolates! I'm thinking I need to do some Google research and place an order. Love me some chocolate creams.

Next year Charles and I are thinking about a vacation to Seattle, Victoria and then a cruise around Alaska. I'll be calling you Ann! LOL!

Yes, Jessica has been busy this summer! I'm so glad that you guys were able to meet.

My jealous is overwhelming! I was in Victoria in 1997 for five days, but that was before I knew about the CF! Victoria is a seriously beautiful place. If I ever win the lottery, that's where I'll retire.

I enjoyed going to Murchie's Tea shop, high tea at the Empress, the tour of the Butchart Gardens - but most of all, riding in a pedicab!

Hey Jessie, next summer you need to bring those boys to Iowa.....Maybe a few days on Ragbrai or a trip to the Iowa State fair.

~whew~ I'm home but still not on top of things. I have been too busy....shouldn't complain, but I do miss cooking and participating on the CF.

Ann took us to a FABULOUS cheese/deli shop - DH went nuts buying local blue cheese, foie gras, and a cumin beef sausage. Our hotel had a kitchen facility so the next morning my dad and I went out for eggs, bread and butter and DH made (and cleaned up!) breakfast with all the goodies. My dad had brought over some Washington smoked salmon as well. Forgot to take a picture of the breakfast spread, but it was great NW fare!

DH has also been in search of the quintessential NW coffee - we didn't have much luck in Seattle with the drive-throughs until we reached our beloved Espresso Vivace for a couple of visits. Ann did show us a great coffee place in Victoria close to our hotel - Caffe Artigiano which did a great job with the latte art, and was approved of by DH as well, LOL.

It was wonderful visiting with her, I know Ann is very busy and it is hard for her to get away...I appreciated she had time for me in the midst of all she is doing!

Next time I'm up there, I want to spend more time with Terri and also meet up with Michaelmaxp! Anyone else?

Not sure what your mode of transportation was, but there's a few of us in Oregon.......if you're driving!!

Looks like a fun meeting. Glad you were able to meet, eat and shop!

What a nice holiday for you Jessy and family and having a day out with Ann! I do envy (very much) those halibut fish & chips.
I didn't get my usual summer dose of them this year. And Rogers chocolates are a favourite for me too over there.

Did you have time to go to the west coast of Vancouver Island?
That's a beautiful drive out to Tofino with plenty of wild scenery, although it's also a long drive.

Now it's time to wind down and relax!

Fish and chips on the dock is a perfect meal and I know one of Ann and Moe's favorites. I'm standing behind Gina waiting on my chocolate too. Great pic of y'all...glad to see you finally met up in person.

Well, looks like I need Victoria advice from Jessy and Ann. :)

I am headed there next summer, for the start of another epic bicycle tour.

Jessy, where did you stay?

I will fly to Seattle, and then see about how to get up to Canada. Haven't done all the research yet. I need to figure out, where to ship my bike, as flying it is getting kind of spensive. Then I will tramp to the same little most northern town in the US, and cross over on my bike.

Eventually I will ride my bike south, along the Pacific coast. But my must see place is Butchart Gardens, which is why I will start the trip earlier than the others, that will ride the same route.

What fun! I can say that with authority and experience since I've have wonderful times with both Ann and Jessica - I wish I had been there with both of you. Yes the fish and chips there are the best.

Riverrat, Elery says I need to see Seattle and one of the few places I really want to go to is Alaska, so at some point I'll be making a similar trip.

I knew you were going to have a great time, Jessica. The fish and chips looks delicious and the cumin beef sausage sounds really interesting.

When I get to that corner of the world I need to visit Teri, Deanna and Carol (Readinglady). Maybe I could get KatieC to meet me halfway....

Yup, one day I'm going to show up on Ann T's doorstep and we're going to have steak, if I have to smuggle a steer along with me!
