Days without a Question--I'm back--Height of sink for Bev Area

Well, you thought you finally got rid of me, didn't you? Well, I'm back. Things are getting more urgent since this is what I saw when I went by the lot yesterday:

I think I want a triflow faucet for my beverage area. I'm not sure about the whole house filtration system stuff yet, so this would be one way to go. I found a Rohl triflow online. The only question I have is I'm not sure if it will look weird since it is 15" high. The sink I 'm using there is Ticor rectangular sink (inside measurements 5.75 inches wide x 15.25 inches long x 5.5 inches deep).

The faucet I'm looking at doesn't say it's a prep/bar sink faucet. It is 15" tall, spout reaches 9". So, is this just wrong? I have a hunch it is.

Hi Prill,

It IS so exciting!! Just went out there w/ dh at lunch. They are making fast progress, the walls go up tomorrow for the foundation--they are not poured walls they are prefab walls-Superior Walls. It's going to go fast!

Ah, what a difference a day makes!! I feel so much better after meeting with the cabinet guy this morning. My husband, our builder, and I were with him for over 2 hours and we got so much accomplished!!! Remember I'm new at this, so I apologize if I seem to be jumping all over the place with my ideas and questions. I'm just trying to get as much information as humanly possible so that I get the kitchen I really want. I posted my "before" pictures over on the Gallery. I've lived with - and hated - a full breakfast room of knotty pine for the last 15 years. I'm trying to be very careful to figure out what I MUST have (my non-negotiables) and what I can put on the table to bargain with (my negotiables.) Basically, this guy was able to understand exactly what I was going for, and he had wonderful suggestions. (My builder told me we would love him!) Bottom line is I'm now getting 2 different cabinet colors (Sage Colourtone with coffee glaze, and Chesapeake with no glaze) and an island (which I didn't think would fit.) I didn't want to go with 2 different colors strictly on the cabinets. Having the island makes all the difference in the world for me. He also figured out a way to incorporate a bookshelf type unit in a very awkward short-walled corner that we were concerned about. Really, I'm so excited to see the plans he comes up with. He knows the budget we're working with, so I've just got the fingers crossed that nothing we did will really raise the price. (I was very open with him about the things that I can let go of and what I can't...you know, that negotiable and non-negotiable thing again.) After looking at the pictures on the soffit threads, I feel better about that. We're not even sure if we have to have the soffits or not. Won't know until he guts the room. I think the farmhouse sinks are more money than I want to spend. I like the look, but it's not something I can't live without. And the island will definitely be one height. Well, I feel like these issues are settled, but I'm pretty darn sure there will be many, many, many more to come!! Thanks. (BTW - my husband told me he has never seen me glued to my laptop as much as I have been this week. Thanks goodness the school break is over on Monday and I'll be back at work. In my house, the kitchen island is not just used for cooking and eating. I have lived in this kitchen and with island for years. So I know how we use it. Because how the house is laid out, there is only 1 logical layout that makes any esthetic or functional sense. So we did not vary from that layout. Like others have said, I pivot 180degree to use the sink when I am working at the island. We use the island more like a center table in the kitchen, rather than the cooking/cleaning surface. My kitchen is about 15x15 ft. No a huge kitchen but not a small kitchen either. We use it to do homework, read the paper, wrap presents, lay out buffets, eat quick meals, pile groceries and more. I had to make a columns of FOR prep sink or AGAINST prep sink on the island. The only time the prep sink made sense was when we had 2 people quite busy in the kitchen while cooking. We only cook and clean about 2 hours total per day in the kitchen. We have someone sitting at the island nearly all day when we are home. If you have a house where the kids sit at the table next to the sink to do homework, visit etc, then the island predominantly functions as a part of the kitchen, then the cooking function trumps the design. In my kitchen, that was not the case; my kids do not sit at the table that is next to the kitchen. They prefer to sit at the island.... Majority of the time we are using the island, the prep sink actually detracted from how we use the kitchen island. I decided to go with the majority function of the house/kitchen/island; no prep sink. I don't regret it. This is a very personal intentional decision on my part. There are moments now and then when 2 sinks would have been nice. But there are more moments where the prep sink on the island would have been PITA.

Mrs Pete, I designed the cabinets holding the sink to be 36 + 15 inches but since Dutchwood is full custom they combined the cabinets to reduce wasted space and to allow the wide 45 inch toekick drawer underneath. That perfectly fits the Kohler accessories and a few extra cutting boards. The divider between the "sink base" and the drawer stack is exactly where the wall would have been between the 36+15 inch cabinets. I found this picture in my pinterest files of someone who did 36' + 12 " for their Stages 45 sink. The Ikeafans website link no longer works so I will post it here with the words that I copied out of the post. As bbtrix said, you can use almost any width drawer stack under the shallow side of the sink. I agree with bbtrix that the center of the sink is the perfect place for the trash. It allows two cooks, one on each side of the sink, or coming from elsewhere in the kitchen to use the trash and the trash drawer is usually open only about 10 inches the whole time we are prepping, since we do not need to access the recycle portion in the back during prepping. Previously, I had a trash mounted on a swing out door and that could not be left open while working at the sink so it was a royal PITA for two cooks or even one cook. I actually thought the trash cans were too large at first since I like smaller grocery bags so that the bags are replaced before they get stinky. I solved this by stashing my spare grocery bags under the current trash and the spare paper bags in front of the recycle trash.The front plastic can is about 17 tall x 14 wide x 10 deep at the top.

Your window is more like 6 feet across...looking at the size of the doors and room. So four feet wouldn't be too small...however, that's massive so you'll have to get one as side in diameter as you can. I think the one above (top right) has more presence than the lower one. I think you have another thread going on this topic? I didn't look but maybe you can ask there, too...

Congratulations on the start of construction.

I have the ladylux3 that's about 14" tall and its big. One way to think about it is that it would be only 3" below the wall cabinets - maybe less depending on moldings, undercabinet lighting or whatever else might change the spacing between counter height and wall cabinet height.

I would not want a faucet that tall with a sink that shallow -- but a sink that shallow will be next to useless with a lower one. Is there a reason you are going so shallow? I'd be concerned that even hand washing will splatter with that little depth.

Bee, I can make my Karbon about that tall over my trough, but I don't like it, and usually bring it closer rather than farther. Splashing in an uninterrupted stream comes from the angle of water and the curvature of the sink, but once you interupt the stream (i.e., put something into it), it's about the angle of the water hitting whatever.

"People!! You can only use the sink if you put that IN the trough!!! Susie!--that cloth is there for a reason. Wipe up after yourself!"

You can get the same issue with a short faucet, especially with rambunctious kids, but it's just not so tempting, or so counterintuitive to adults.

The proportions might look odd too.

The excavation looks promising! I hope it's a sign of good things to come.

Once again, my mind is so overloaded my question was not clear. Sorry!

This is for the beverage sink. It's at the bar area. Only to fill coffee pot/ espresso machine, to add water to drinks, a place to dump out leftover coffee from the mug before refilling, dump out any leftover ice before refilling, etc.

This is not the prep sink.

I think I'm going to go with the Brizo Solna's prep faucet, It's 12 1/2 " tall, the faucet is 7" above the deck. I don't need a faucet with a sprayer there, but I'm going with the Brizo Solna Touch (to be released in March) at the prep sink, so they will look good together.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought it would look too big. And then I looked at Rohl's website, it is not a prep/bar faucet. It's just a regular kitchen sink.
