There are quite a few members here who are concerned with creating heart healthy meals for either themselves or loved ones. Shambo comes to mind. She has a blog which you will find very informative.

I watch the sodium in our meals, too. I used to cook for a heart patient. I focus on adding herbs, vinegars, lemon juice, and wine (not for a diabetic probably) for flavor punches that make you forget there is no salt. The good thing about adopting a low sodium diet is that in a short time the palate adjusts and anything with salt will taste unpleasantly salty.

Cooking methods like grilling and broiling add flavor without salt or fat. I use cooking sprays or a tiny bit of olive oil for all my pan cooking.

For ease the Mrs. Dash selection of herb mixes are very good. My 16 year old is salt conscious and loves them. We use the tomato/basil/garlic and the table blends all the time.

I did pick up the Mrs Dash table blend for mom. Right now she is so scared she's eating very little and very plain, but I'm sure that will change as she adjusts.

Penzeys has lots of spice blends for variety. They have a salt-free tab, IIRC

paulines, I know Rita has been doing the no salt thing for her husband for a year or so too, so she probably has some good tips.

I got a lot of recipes for Dad from Cooking Light and Eating Well, both of whom have good websites.

Good luck, it's an adjustment but I've gotten to the point where I enjoy good honest food that tastes like it's supposed to taste instead of like salt, butter or sauce.

Paulines, recipes are a useful tool when considering special diets. But, I would also recommend classes to educate you on a diabetic and heart healthy diet. I hope I don't offend anyone by urging caution when considering how you are educated and by whom. There is a lot of health quackery out there as well as those who go beyond the modicum of ''moderation'' and take nutrition to extremes.

Hospital based cardiac rehabilitation programs as well as hospital nutrition classes taught by registered dietitians are the best place to start. You will find it is possible to alter dishes you are currently making to meet the guidelines for your DM.

My DD(dad) is diabetic and has CAD. I know your concerns.

Barnmom,thanks for remembering my blog. Following a low sodium diet can be challenging. One frustration in "heart healthy" eating is that many of the so-called easily available low fat foods are super high in either salt and/or sugar.

Annie, you're absolutely right about Rita. She's another one working with low sodium restrictions. We've compared notes and products before.
