Your High School Teacher?

Did you have "nicknames" for teachers when you were in school?

I was thinking about this Teacher that we use to call Twinkle Toes. She was a pear-shaped lady with skinny legs that wore high heels and walked on her Tippy Toes in the halls so her heels wouldn't make noise. It was terrible that we made fun of her.

But, God will get cha...Guess how I'm built? You got it...top heavy with skinny legs. LOL!

Just two that I can think of - my 5th grade teacher we nicknamed "Weebles" because of her shape. (Weebles wobble but they don't fall down)

And my 9th grade Earth Science teacher was Mr. Otten... we called him Rotten Otten.

best, I'm getting that book for my son! I just had all my conferences with his teachers (he is a Jr in HS) and every single one of them commented on how quiet he is, including one teacher who actually called him "aloof." They all acted as though he's the first quiet kid who has made his way through that school. My older DS never really dated in HS. He fell head over heels in love right after graduation, though, and had a messy and emotional breakup about 6 months later. Hasn't dated anyone since then (almost two years ago). Younger DS (the quiet one) now has his first GF, as of about two months. They have been friends for two years and they are part of the same group of friends so it's hard to determine what counts as a date and what is just hanging out with friends, because there's a lot of overlap there. Sometimes they go out with the group and then the group will disperse and the two of them will go elsewhere. Sometimes they're in the group and they all stay together for the evening. And probably least frequently, they will go out on a real date. Problem with this whole scenario is that it feels (to me) that he is spending too much time with the GF, but since part of that time they are also with the guy friends who I want him to also spend time with... it's not like I can say, okay, hang out with your friends but don't invite her this time! Anyway, it does seem like a nice relationship so far. Hard to say if it will get serious but I do wonder how the breakup will be if/when it happens, because if it's not cordial, it's going to be awkward for their group of friends.

jeanninepc99, your dining room is really lovely. I hope you don't mind that I have saved your photo as an inspiration shot for "staging" our dining room when the house goes on the market. So pretty! I am really begining to like spare (have too much artwork to do bare). We have stored a ton of our stuff over the last two weeks and unexpectedly I absolutely love the sparseness. We have filled two storage units and I can't believe I had room for it all in the first place. In my new place I plan to be extremely selective about the "bringing in" part. I am an accumulator at heart, however. I love old oil portraits of women, and to me they are like potato chips and diamonds all at once. On the good side, I have solidly gotten over the Italian floral tole phase, due to upkeep issues. I am only keeping one chandelier and that's because it's got the beautiful pink porcelain flowers and doesn't show dust much anyway. Otherwise, dusting tole is the pits. (If anyone reading this likes floral tole, for gosh sake, let me know how you keep it clean! Q-tip?) I'll probably just have to have the mother of all garage sales, and then abide by the strict rule of something in, something out. I hope we'll have more threads like this...everyone's pictures were very inspiring. Joanna

So I went and read the article... then I read the comments that the editor had received both against and in favor of the no 0 policy. The people who commented in favor of the policy had a good reason, up to a point. Basically, they said that giving the 0 says ok, you got a 0 so you don't have to do the work. They said that instead of giving a 0 the student should be required to complete the work. I'm not a teacher, but I do know that the authority of teachers any more is way to limited and much of the time they do not receive the support they need from the school or from the parents. Here's my question. How in the world is the teacher to 'require' the student complete the work? Apparently they can't use loss of grades (getting the 0) as incentive. They certainly can't physically force the student (potential child abuse issue - and I do agree that teachers shouldn't use physical force on students). Many of the parents aren't going to back them up. How is the school going to back them up? I'm seriously interested in some thoughts on this. Can they make the students stay in the school enough extra hours that the student does the work just to get out of the building? Can they refuse diplomas (might work on Seniors, but I doubt underclassmen are thinking far enough ahead to consider this a real thread)? What are the options to require the students to do the work?

I still have them, but only the senior year is reachable. The others are somewhere in the stacks of stuff in the garage. I have always kept the senior yearbook handy because up until a few years ago, we had a reunion every year. I always wanted to go back and jog my memory about everybody. Then it began to taper off until maybe just those who still lived in the area would get together. My DH and I went to the reunions when we still lived in that area. Years went by; we moved away and later moved back. We went to a reunion then, and when we got to the door where it was being held, I looked in and told my DH we must be in the wrong place . . . there was noone in there except old people! There were more reunions to follow before the numbers dwindled to make it impossible, but we had some great ones, including a group cruise for the 50th "follow up." My senior yearbook is for 1942. We had a Guidance Counselor named Mr. Bader. You can just imagine what we (especially the boys) called him behind his back. :-)

A very popular coach at our high school was Coach Augustine. We all affectionately called him Augie Doggie.

A very portly history teacher's name was Ms. Hogg. I bet you can figure out what many of the kids called her. She was one of my favorite teachers.

We had a library/current events teacher in 8th grade named Miss. Hanrahan. We all called her Hammerhead. That's the only one I can think of out of all my teachers.

We (or the boys!) had an agri teacher that was affectionately known as "Capt'n Baldwin". A kid once said to him,
Hey, Capt'n, throw me a hammer, would ya!?" It whizzed right by the kid's ear!!! LOL

Two come to mind, our business teacher that I had typing, shorthand and bookkeeping under was an older lady, very short, and she walked very slow. Her name was Miss Brown, but we called her Granny Brown. We loved it when she had outside duty during recess, the class would be almost over before she could walk to the classroom.

There was another teacher named Mr. Moseley, he taught agri and also taught some math classes. We called him Major Moseley, to his back of course.

I'm surprised that I remember all this after being out of school for almost 43 years!

My Latin teacher looked like Olive Oyle. Her hair was in a bun, her shoes were big compared to her skinny legs and she didn't have a curve in her body. oh my gosh...I haven't thought about her in years. In those days I was pretty thin too (not any more) :(

Oh my we had lots of nicknames for our teachers!

Our history teacher was "Hop-sing" because he looked like that character from Bonanza. He got the nickname long before I went to highschool and it stuck all those years. I never even watched Bonanza, it came on when I was a little kid. I think Hop-sing was the cook and was probably Oriental? Not sure, but our history teacher wasn't Oriental.

Then there was our French teacher, he was "Sock". Apparently he got that nickname when he was a kid and somehow we learned of it. But we never called him that to his face, he was one of the most feared teachers in our school.

The physics teacher was "Gonzo" because he had a big nose like Gonzo's beak from The Muppet Show.

Our phys. ed. teacher was Mrs. G. (for obvous reasons), we called her that rather than her full name, she was nice.

One of our sciences teachers was "Rabbit" because he had sort of buck teeth.

Our grade 8 home room teacher was "Sugar Tits"....writing that seems so awful! LOL I have no idea why they called her that but they did, she was an older lady.

Our principal was "Chrome Dome" because he was bald.

One of our regular substitute teachers was "Scruff". I am not sure why, probably because he had a scruffy beard. Story goes that one day he was substituting and a girl went up to him in the hallway, wanting something. She said "Excuse me Mr. Scruff"......she actually thought that was his name! LOL

Mr. Cooke was sometimes called "Cookie".

That's all I can think of but there are probably more.

I remember a teacher named Mrs. Barrett; she always had a kind of simpering smile. My friend Mike would refer to her as "Grinnin' Barrett."

We called our HS principal Lurch from the Adam's family. He sort of looked like him but he walked around the halls grunting like lurch. Another teacher was called Rag, I think you can guess why. It doesn't seem very nice now but if I were to meet her on the street today, I would have to call her that. She really was one mean woman! Our business teacher was called David Pile after Gomer Pile. He was in the National Guards. I know there were LOTS more. We had nicknames for all our teachers, even the ones we liked. Some we even called to their face.

I had a Chemistry teacher that walked like a duck and all the boys would quack when she walked by. I hated they were mean to her because I just loved her.

We had a nun who taught World History. Sister Esther.
She was very short, and very fat.
Looked just like Boris Badenov (from Bullwinkle cartoons)...so we called her Boris.

We had a grossly obese Librarian, who also taught Business Law, typing and bookkeeping. Her name was Miss Keeter. They called her Miss Skeeter. There were some others, but can't remember the names now. We had some doozies for teachers.
