OH WOW!!!! At first I thought you were in Toronto it looks so much like the St Lawrence Market!

I could spend all day in a place like that even though it would mean remortgaging the house! Did you come home laden with wonders?

I'm no expert but looking at arms of chair & back looks like it would have been expensive but then you see the kind of messy seat area & wonder what went on, I wonder it if had springs under the padded seat where the boards now are. I don't think they are original. Might look at ebay & see if they have any with carving or the boxy look of this 1. I had a chair at 1 time with springs that were kind of squarish & above them was horsehair "mat"(highly allergic to) & above that a leather or fabric seat with kind of strawlike stuff. I think it is my chair that has a carved rose on the back. It is just like regular dining chair but walnut & rose was carved at top of back. It would look good in dining room at a wood table, this chair is more of an easy chair in a parlor where you would sit & talk for a long time & would need a very large comfortable chair. I think my uncle had a couple in his parlor along with large floral rug on the floor & strange musical instruments, harpschord & zither??? This chair could have been more of men's chair & then would have been leather seat, if woman's it would be a floral or maybe needlepoint heavily padded seat. At my uncle's I think the arms were wider at end(where you put your hands) put don't remember any carving, backs were about as wide as your's. He lived to be nearly 100 as I had 4 uncles & 1 aunt that all lived to 100-105, 109(aunt)I think this 1 was 96 or 98 when he died. They had a pump in the kitchen & heated water on the stove as late as 1983 so their house was like going into another time, all 4 kids graduated from college so don't know why they never "went modern" Not much help but hope it's a start!

If you must know: a book on Japanese graphic art, artists like Hokusai, etc. 2 books on the Civil War Cottage Gardening by Christopher Lloyd You see, none of the books were priced until you waited in line and got to the lady who was running the sale. Once you got to her, she set the prices and you pay up. So as you waited in line, which had 20+ people in it when I was there, you were amongst books for sale. It was the ultimate impulse shopping tactic. You see, I love books but I had not the time to look at them all and I was there mainly for plants anyway. And to buy plants you had to wait in the line to get to the lady, whereupon you two would retire to the outside to set prices (which departure elicited catcalls from those waiting behind you). So as I waited in line, I browsed the books surrounding me. By the time I got up to the lady I had found 4 that interested me. No doubt I could've found 400. Probably a good thing I did not. Paid 16 bucks for those 4 books. Plants (all in nice crockery): sago palms w/trunks, cardboard palm, 2 5 foot tall dwarf alberta spruces, western red cedar paired w/ a japanese maple in a pot. Prices were a steal! Paid 80 bucks for plants.

Adventures with my Newbie Niece

Thought I would update this, as my DH and I spent from 11AM to 6PM helping my niece and her DH in their garden. Despite her "I know nothing.." comments, they were both very willing to learn (although truly ignorant). Sometimes very intelligent people like to learn new things, and I think that is what happened. By the end of the day, she and I (I stuck to my decision NOT to do much work, just to advise her what to do) had planted a rose I brought them, which was a rooted cutting (which had been in a big pot for 2 years and was well developed) of my ancient huge bush Cecile Brunner. We had also pruned and sprayed (rust) and fed and mulched an old climbing HT which was in her garden already. I had fed it a year ago, probably for the first time it had been fed in several decades. It had responded by putting out several healthy climbing canes, so we tied those to the fence, and when we were done it actually looked respectable. Then we did the same thing to two pathetic, tiny, barely surviving mop head hydrangeas which her mow and blow guy had evidently been cutting almost down to the ground EVERY Fall. I told her to tell him NOT to touch them, ever. Meanwhile, my DH was teaching her DH how to install a drip watering system - they got quite a lot done, and I was pleased to notice that our nephew asked lots of questions, and by the end of the day had succeeded in understanding most of what my DH was telling him. So, their interest and enthusiasm was much better than I had expected, and that was very nice. Now she just has to take back to the store several trees she bought before I got there, thinking (or not thinking) that they would make nice 8 ft tall bushes, when the tags on them said they got 15-20 feet tall and wide! My recent unexpected ER adventure
Q
Comments (50)
palisades, thanks for understanding and replying in the same spirit that I wanted to but perhaps didn't do as gently as I should have. I have friends and relatives who are doctors of various sorts, including medical doctors. From such people and from my own providers, I've learned that very often diagnoses of diseases and conditions are nuanced and often tentative and uncertain, and appropriate actions or treatment options are often the same and more. Few physicians in few situations will feel comfortable saying "if this, then always that", unless the question is "Should I turn my light off when I go to bed" Few matters physicians deal with are that simplistic. My impression in reading what you wrote was that it was unlikely you were talking about something about which you had education or training to deal with. Because your words suggested far too much certainty than I've come to expect from experts I know when discussing issues that are nuanced. There are not "quite a few health professionals" who visit on this forum. There are a lot of pretenders who avoid answering what their qualifications are when asked, meaning, they have none. There's one ER physician who happens by periodically who is generous with her time (I believe it's a female doc) but who understandably keeps her comments at a high level and general. Except to debunk egregious comments made by pretenders who seem to do so regularly, Expert advice is available from public sources, and many often refer to these. Not as personal opinions necessarily but to share the expert comments. Believe words from experts with scientific, medical or public health qualifications, not from media personalities or those who work in news or editorial positions. .

Well, that looks very familiar! One of my favorite Philadelphia spots -- The Reading Terminal Market. What -- no picture of the Bassett's Ice Cream counter?? It's directly across from Famous 4th Street Cookies.

I'm hoping we can have a Philadelphia get-together here sometime this fall.

Looks like you were on North Broad St looking south at City Hall. That's William Penn on top of City Hall, not Benjamin Franklin as so many people think.

I was just in town for lunch last week, but not at the Terminal. I love our city! Everyone should come and visit. Thanks for posting these pictures, Alexa.

You must have had a great time! Thanks for sharing.

Now that is my kind of market.

It was a great day and I did come home with a few goodies. Not as many as I had hoped though, we had forgotten the cooler and were stuck in Philly all day, so I only bought non-refrigerator stuff.

In the 4th from last photo there is a display of sandwiches, I had the one towards the back - Chicken with asiago, garlic, spinach and lemon... and we split a small side of tortellini salad that had olives, peppadews and orange segments in a creamy basil dressing. It sounded really odd but turned out to be delicious! My friend had an Ice Cream from Bassett's and I had a 4th st Butter Pecan Cookie for dessert.

I am definitely interested in a Philly Fall Get Together - let's pick a date soon though, my fall seems to be filling up with obligations already! If we are looking at weekends, I know 9/19, 9/25 and 10/16 are all bad weekends for me already.

Thanks for looking everyone and I wish all of us could meet here at Reading Terminal for lunch!

Alexa, I had only scrolled half way down the first photo and knew where you'd been. I love the Reading Terminal Market.

I have a lot going on this fall but would welcome a lunch get-together.

One of the only benefits of being marginally employed is I have a fairly flexible schedule so would love to get together this fall!!

I'd love to get into Philly but the blasted HEAT has kept me unmotivated to go out this summer. I felt ten years younger while I was in cooler MI last week. My cooking, house and yard have all suffered from my lethargy. I am due for an IKEA run anyway, so I'll be Philly bound sooner or later. I probably shouldn't go to the market though, I am fighting the battle of the bulge and it might be too, too much for me to handle!!

But it DOES seem like the perfect place for us Philly region foodies to gather, lol!

Oh my holy heck! We don't have anything like that here in Megalopolis! And why not?! It's simply not fair.

Does Amtrak stop anywhere near this market? Would this be feasible to take a train up to Philly from NC?

Teresa. Amtrak goes to the 30th Street Station, but it would not be hard to get to Reading Terminal from there

From the Amtrak site:
AMTRAKÂ30th Street Station
Take SEPTA regional rail to Market Street East Station. Follow signs to Pennsylvania Convention Center and Reading Terminal Market.

We would LOVE to meet with you!

Well, I'll have to get down there, and tell those guys they misspelled Shawarma.

I'm kidding, of course. I've never played the grammar police, and I'm not about to start now, even if I am feeling a tad ornery ;-Ã

Alexa, I would've been crying all the way to my car, if I hadn't been able to walk away with some of their delicious perishables. And you were lucky they allow those flashy thingies in a place like that. The last time I took my camera to a similar market, I was quickly reprimanded. Infidels.

Thanks for the tour.

Well, a guy can dream about a place like that here in OK. Not happening! I'm always amazed at some of the market pics shared here over the years. That looks like a two day shopping trip for me. Great pics and I'm sorry y'all forgot the cooler. Proabably saved a few bucks though. LOL

Yes, I saw the price on that vinegar. OY! Reminds of a small jar of truffle salt I saw at a shop here of all places. Think it was 25 bucks and it was a very small jar!

Thanks for sharing your day with us Alexa!

Oh my, I would love to go there. How long did you stay? Looks like it would take most of the day just to look!

We have gone to a few markets and I think the two that most impressed me were Mercado Central in Santiago, Chile and Pike Place Fish in Seattle. We bought a huge amount of fish from Pike and now I order online.

If I ever get to Philly I am going to Reading Terminal Market.

Thanks for sharing, your pictures are great

Thud! And to think we had a mediocre lunch in a historic tavern instead of visiting Reading Terminal. DH would have been in sheer heaven! Thanks for the great shots and the report. That market and visiting with Pam make me long for another visit!

Ellen! Do it! Do it! Come back! Every time I read about a get-together I re-kick myself for missing you last time.

By the way, are we serious about a Philadelphia meetup? Reading Terminal is easily reached from anywhere on the east coast by train and about half an hour from the Philly airport!!

I'm anxiously waiting to see what date might suit everyone. I have commitments the first two weekends in October. But would try to make it later in Oct. or anytime in November. If getting a hotel room, would love a roommate, or I may see if a friend wants to take the trip with me, probably by train. (I see Amtrak and NC commuter trains all day long and would love to go somewhere by train!)
