Comments (2)What you store is totally personal. I have three IKEA Pax 36" wardrobes (in the white, raised panel design) and love them. I have 2 deep ones for my clothes (there's only one closet in the master bd, and it's 4' wide) and one shallow one for linens. Few halls will be able to take a deep cabinet. Ours is 6' wide, and because of the door layout, a 2' deep closet would be claustrophobic. We do not have many linens, but our shallow cabinet is FULL with just linens for our family of four, plus some dirty clothes space at the bottom. The nice thing about the depth, though, is that everything is very accessible. We keep our meds, tp, etc. in the bathroom. Triage everything BEFORE investing in more storage. How many towels do you really need? How many meds are old? How many are duplicates? Lots of people have Nyquil AND Mucinex AND Sudafed without realizing that there is only ONE effective OTC decongestant, ONE effective OTC expectorant, and ONE effective OTC cough suppressant. Have a small bottle of decongestant/expectorant for the day (cough suppressant optional), one expectorant only for night plus Afrin for night use in emergencies, and that's it. With a bottle of pain killers and a swig of the alcohol of your choice, and you can recreate whatever branded blend you desire with a lot less total space. The basic rule is to learn to check ingredients before buying and make sure you don't duplicate products....See MoreDeepest, ugliest ex-tv wall niche ever - is it a total loss?
Comments (17)I have spent the last 3 months decluttering and organizing my house, and I can still think of dozens of things that I could store in each of those spaces. Top one is for things you want to keep, but don't need to look at often, lower one is much more convenient. I would put doors on both. Shelving would depend on what I wanted to store. Things that come immediately to mind: Top: boxes of mementos, items saved for when kids move out, toys saved for future grandkids, family keepsakes that you don't have room to display (but can't bear to toss or donate). Bottom: suitcases, camping gear, tubs of off-season clothes or bedding, holiday decorations, ski boots, jigsaw puzzles, beach towels, fat jeans (or jeans I know will fit when I lose 10 pounds). Put one or two pull-outs on the bottom space, to make it easier to access. A shoe rack would be perfect!...See MoreHardest layout ever. Is this the best I can do?
Comments (42)This is a small kitchen, so I think some compromises have to be made. While I'm not necessarily a fan of corner main sinks, there are times when they are necessary to provide a functional space. I do have a corner prep sink in my kitchen - which I really like for several reasons, but it's not the main sink...and I'm the one who uses it the most. (I get priority!) Yes. others use it, but not when I am! I would much rather have the corner sink with workspace on the "top" wall b/w the range and sink than having virtually no space b/w the sink and range with the DW far away from the sink (relatively speaking). CPArtist's "L" might work, but I'd move the DW to the very end of the run and then move the sink over next to it so prep space is maximized. It looks like there's no wall b/w the Dining Room and Kitchen. I think moving the DW down as far as possible would work. If that's going to be a peninsula with seating, then I would rather have the sink in the corner than fully on the peninsula. Just some thoughts for now. Good luck! I'm going to be away from the the Forum for 1.5 weeks - I suspect this thread will be "done" when I get back, so I wanted to wish you luck now! :-)...See MoreHow to utilize this space (linen closet)
Comments (5)Think about how you live and what you will realistically do as the years go on. Do you really want to stand in a narrow hallway folding the laundry? I sure wouldn't. Especially as you get older you won't. You'll prefer bringing the laundry somewhere you can sit down and do it. Why not keep the laundry closet a laundry closet, which every home really needs. Unless you don't do the laundry at all, and have paid domestic help and will for the rest of your life, in which case my concern isn't relevant....See MoreRelated Professionals
