I think it makes sense to put the book rack behind the door! the plane frames may look good a little darker, to add some weight. the room will look really nice when the wood and curtains get done.

How old is he?

For such a small room, you are giving up a lot of wall space to the book rack. I think it would be fine to put it next to the closet...it doesn't look like much of it would be covered when the door is open. Otherwise you might consider eliminating it and getting a smaller bookcase or a larger night stand to store more books.

Also, with a small room, though it makes it harder to make the bed, I like the bed pushed up against the wall to make as much play space as possible in the room.

It's hard to tell without measurements, but I would consider eliminating the big book shelf, moving the dresser and mirror next to the closet door, pushing the bed up against the long wall with the head of the bed on the door wall with the nightstand next to it. Then get a chair for the corner by the window as a place to read...if you can fit a narrow bookshelf along the wall under the window, that would be fine....it would make the books more accessible too. Add a fun rug to the area between the bed and the closet and the room will feel bigger and afford some play space too.

The book rack has sentimental value so I'd really like to make it work, if possible. It was the perfect size for his old room but now I'm realizing that a smaller size would have been more versatile. So should I position it as close to the closet doors as possible without regard for it being centered on that small wall between the closet and the corner? When the door is closed, it would be way off to the right, but with the door open, it will be more visible (less of the rack hiding behind the door). Does that make sense? I can't tell if I only make sense to myself! :-)

Springroz, I agree that the plane frames need something. I had that suggestion before when I posted about his old room but just never got around to it. I think I'll wait until other things are done (walls painted, etc) to see what color would be best. They may pop more against the yellow walls and only need a light gray mat (another suggestion from before).

I agree with Annie about moving the dresser and mirror to the closet wall if you can put it there without the entry door bumping into it, there looks like theres enough space. I would put the head of the bed on the entry door wall facing the window and leave just enough space between the wall and the bed to walk around the bed to make it, then put the nightstand next to the bed, close to the entry door. Then take a look and see where the bookshelf should go to balance out the large elements in the room and arrange the pictures to balance the room out as well. Small spaces are challenging but it looks like you are good at editing, it looks very organized.

I understand sentimental, but the shelving really is large for a room where wall space is at a premium....is there any way you can mount it to the wall in the hallway outside his room? It looks to be pretty shallow so it might work well there and he might appreciate a corner at the foot of his bead with even a bean bag chair and a wall mounted lamp where he could enjoy all his books....

There is enough room for the dresser to go on the closet wall, and I think you're right, it would balance the furniture in the room a bit. Kind of feels like everything is on one side right now. Maybe the books could go at the foot of the bed in the corner by the window. A little reading corner as Annie is suggesting. I worry that the dresser will feel like "too much" right as you walk in the door. Its 34 x 19 and the wall space (with the door open) is 38 wide. I will try it though!

I would consider cutting the rack down to make it narrower so that it fits nicely next to the closet. Maybe that is the best solution. It seems that those of you who have posted agree that the bed in the corner on the door wall is the best. I think that will open things up. What about putting the dresser next to the bed on the door wall? I could put a lamp on it and do away with the bedside table? Then put the book rack at the end of the bed near the window as mentioned previously.

About the nightstand, if he uses it I would keep it next to the bed. In small spaces it is best to choose function first, which makes the room more comfortable. I live in a very small home and my number one priority is comfort, but it can look good and be comfortable too.

Not sure if there is room but could you put the head of your son's bed under the window with the nightstand on the closet side. Then your book rack could be on the same wall as the dresser....maybe a small childs rocker in the corner by the bookrack. I see you have the heating unit to contend with but with the openness of the bed, it might not be a problem. If you made your book rack narrower, then I could see it on the left side of his closet but not if it is half hidden by the open door.

We live in an area of the country where it gets cold, so I never want the head of my bed under a window...too cold in the winter....but if you live in a warm part of the country, maybe the cool night air would be a good thing...

I thought I'd update for anyone interested....I ended up putting the book rack on the closet wall. I am really happy with it there :-) The rest of the room is coming along! Just need to finish the curtains, put on the matching bedskirt, and get some bedding. Here's where it stands today:

benlinus (lost, right? love it!) - I have gotten that suggestion before about the plane frames, and I think I'll make a decision once everything else is done. I'm thinking light gray mats and maybe red frames. Not sure yet!

yayagal - The chest will probably stay as-is, it has really grown on me and now it's one of my favorite pieces of furniture. Here's a better picture of it:

When I first got it, I posted here asking for hardware and paint suggestions and I was told not to touch it! ha ha Seriously though, I'm glad I didn't because it is in such nice shape. I thought about just switching the hardware but it's an odd size and I don't feel like going through the trouble to special order anything at this point.

The nightstand, however, is nothing special so I have considered painting it (and replacing the hardware) as well as the headboard. Currently, all three wood pieces are a slightly different finish, which isn't a big deal, but they could also be cute painted. Any thoughts there are welcomed for sure.

I think the night stand would look great in navy. I would also consider painting the bookrack navy. Do the headboard in white, perhaps with a navy accent.

I adore the chest, and would NOT consider changing it.
