Mine is turkey dinner. I have been eating it through all of my treatments. Also need Danish Dessert at times. It is like a strawberry pudding.

This thread reminded me of a time long ago, a cold, foggy, drizzly day in early May, in Bar Harbor. Thoroughly chilled from camping out and walking around slick Acadian rocks, late morning, we walked into a small restaurant on Main Street, ordered coffee and chose a table near the fireplace to warm up. The restaurant was nearly empty, being between breakfast and lunch times. On the menu was New England Clam Chowder, sounded good and warm and filling, so we each ordered a bowl. Enjoying the coffee and warmth, some time went by. Had some more coffee. We certainly had nowhere to go that would be better. Finally the waitress arrived with our chowder, apologizing for the delay. She explained that the chef had to shuck the clams and prepare the broth. When I looked down to my bowl, I was amazed to see it chock full of fresh long neck Ipswich clams, you know...the ones with the succulent bellies and chewy necks...surrounded by the creamiest, buttery ambrosia of a broth...not thick or starchy, but just thick enough to coat the spoon. Small chunks of potato, onions and parsley just accented the dozen or so whole tender clams lazing in the steaming bowl. That's real clam chowder. Well worth the wait. In fact I've waited maybe 30 years, ordered clam chowder many times at many restaurants since, but have never had anything even close to that experience. Thanks for bringing back that memory.

1) When you're hungry and wanting a snack, are you more likely to crave a sweet or salty/spicy snack? if it's the daytime, something salty/spicy... late at night after dinner, then usually something sweet. 2) The 3 junk-type foods that are hardest for you to resist: doritos LOVE tostitos with either a good con queso dip or guacomole-i can eat many calories with those! chewy candy--swedish fish, twizzlers, gummy lifesaves, etc. or peppermint patties. 3) Complete the following sentence: Do NOT bring any ________ into this house, because I can (will?) personally eat all of it . . . or at least waaay too much! i'm really good if it's in the house UNOPENED! lol. i usually can resist opening something, but once it's open, forget it-usually doritos, etc. 4) Although you may not eat at fast food restaurants a lot, what are your 3 favorite yummy-but-not-very-good-for you foods and from where? i really hardly ever eat fast food, but if i do i tend to order the 'wraps'... mcdonalds have them and wendy's have the chicken caeser wraps which i'll eat. i'm not big into burgers and only like the fries if they're HOT and CRISPY, which is often so hit and miss that i don't bother! 5) At nicer restaurants, what 2 or 3 foods do you have to force yourself not to order? i'll often pass on the french onion soup and choose something healthier even though i LOVE a good french onion soup crock with melted cheese and crusty bread!! i love all pastas, but will steer away sometimes to order something lighter. i love a really good carrot cake and if i see someplace has one that looks REALLY good, it's hard to pass! 6) Favorite comfort foods at home that are (sigh!) yummy but fat and/or calories-wise not that great for you or your waistline? i love making/eating pasta carbonara, but only do so occasionally. love creamy soups---buying fat free half and half makes me feels better but they still often have butter...(currently have broccoli and cheese soup leftover in the fridge--YUM!!) LOVE fruit pies/cobblers. 7) Favorite drink that you wish was "no calorie"? sweet drinks like margaritas sweet wines, like white zinfandel-love it! love chocolate coffee creamers---would be great if they were 0 calorie and still tasted great!! 8) What are 3 of your favorite "more healthful foods" to (try and) fall back on when the cravings hit? i guess popcorn is better than chips, but i usually don't really fall back on it... i buy those mini flavored rice cakes and feel better about those! i often will order fish or salad in restaurants- to either avoid fat or increase my veggie consumption! will order sorbet at the end of a meal when i'm really craving a dessert, but don't want the calories. 9) Favorite more healthful drinks? peppermint tea (with honey), icewater.

I stopped tonight to get a "Coney dog" at the local "Coney and Swirl" which is the ice-cream/hotdog stand in my small town, very typical of what was in almost every small town in Michigan at one time. Anyway, while "suckin' on a chili dog outside the Tastee Freeze," I was reflecting on what someone told me once (from NY) that Michigan hot dogs were better than most other states because we had higher standards about what kind of meat could go into them. Not sure about the truth of that story though. When I got home, while googling "Michigan hot dogs" to find out more, I discovered this funny article from the Smithsonian magazine called, "The Annals of Geographically Confused Foods" lol! Apparently "coneys" in NY are called "michigans!" That really cracked me up! In my adopted hometown of Allentown, PA, apparently Mr. Yocco "invented" the chili dog too, and made it world famous to boot. ;) To me, a chili dog is just a chili dog, and little stands with root beer or ice cream and hotdogs do mean summer in Michigan, although for me coming home to MI will always mean, "let's have a lake fish fry!" There are three things I miss when I am away from my home state, one is all the fresh fruit, (but then my ancestors settled in an area just north of "Fruitport" Michigan), maple syrup and lake fish, either pan fish from the inland lakes or Great Lakes fish. I do miss walking down to the diary queen or root beer stand with my best friend and spending my allowance on some kind of junk food, but that kind of pleasure isn't quite what it used to me for me now. What can I say but, "Life goes on, long after the thrill of livin' is gone." 1. GW member? Since 2007. I found this site while googling reviews of Dacor ovens. I had to switch my login name a few years back when I discovered that my neighbor lurked here and repeated my comments to other neighbors. I never said anything that I regretted but I found her actions a little creepy. 2. Coffee. With Skim Plus Fat Free half n half. 3. What color is your bedroom? Right now it's primed and awaiting our decision on color. 4. Coziest or most relaxing room? My family room with a gas Jotul stove. Good for cuddling, watching TV or reading. 5. Do you garden as well as decorate? I garden and pay someone to help me decorate. 6. Does your décor extend to your outdoor space? It's more like my indoor space is influenced by my outdoors. 7. Fresh or artificial? I grow orchids and there are more than 30 spread throughout the house. When they're blooming I bring them to a more prominent location. Even now after one of the coldest months we've had I have six blooming. 8. Where did/do you splurge in your home? And for yourself? We splurge by purchasing what we want. We research first and then buy - it might be the 2 Sub Zeros in the kitchen or a vintage rug in the foyer. But it could equally be something we found at the local Habitat for Humanity store or at an out of the way 'antique' furniture store that we stumbled upon while on a drive. We look for quality first and then value. For myself? I usually let DH handle those splurges but I did just buy a vintage Hermes scarf - it was a limited release and had a special meaning for me. 9. Lip gloss, lipstick or chapstick? Only chapstick if need. Favorite comfort food? Must I limit it to one? Oh well. Mac and Cheese. What’s for lunch/dinner/next meal? We're having homemade minestrone soup tonight and salad. We had to cancel dinner reservations due to the treacherous ice.

I agree with alexis......mashed potatoes, no flavors though, just butter, salt, pepper. Second choice would be a baked-in-the-oven potato, same add ons.

haha, Chisue! He's a little hard to forget. I like Souffer's anything.

My favorite comfort food though is beef vegetable soup. I could probably eat it at least 3 times a week. Grilled cheese with tomato soup is comforting, too.

My mom likes mashed potatoes.

I like chocolate... cake, cookies, hot chocolate, candy, ice cream, most anything chocolate.

My daughter likes salty snacks.

I started this topic and now...I'm starving. Not just for my mac 'n cheese but for everything!!! It all sounds so good and I could really pig out about now! This made me think of another favorite...banana pudding! When I have banana pudding, I don't know when to stop. Also, I had something from my childhood the other night that was yummy. My mom used to heat the little cherry or apple fried pies and then put vanilla ice cream on top. I found them 2/$1.00 last week and that was a great treat!!!

Gravy! Gravy on biscuits. Gravy on bread. Gravy as a beverage. Gravy on turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing. Gravy on just about anything makes me comforted. Gravy!

Oh and then there's popcorn.

Oh, hands down it is gravy for me. I was raised on the stuff. Love milk gravy on *anything* at *any time*. Now, it has been quite awhile since I have had any and almost forever since I have made any (it is very unhealthy) but once in awhile I will order a country breakfast that comes with about 1/4 cup of gravy on top of my sausage/biscuit/egg combo.

Coming in second is a good crusty sour french bread with olive oil and fig balsamic vinegar for dipping. Yummo!

I like carbs more than sweets. Sigh.

A hot juicy burger stuffed with gooey white cheese on a toasted butter bun. A little ketchup and mustard. Don't plan an being lady like with that combo.

I should have stayed away from this thread this morning...lol! I read all the new posts and now I'm starving. Funny how just reading about food can trigger our minds and make us think of things we really want to eat! I have a craving for cheese eggs from Waffle House. There's a WH just minutes from my office. I haven't been there in ages. But...I think I may have to order there at lunchtime. Cheese eggs, bacon and grits....yum!

Everything sounds sooooo good. But for me it's homemade chicken pot pie or homemade potato soup with cheese and sour cream. Then of course, we must have chocolate and ice cream (homemade banana or store bought Pecan Praline) just to stay alive and functioning. :-)

Yep, mac and cheese for me as well. Homemade, crunchy on top. Haven't made it in a long time.

I also like a Vietnamese soup with clear noodles from a local restaurant as comfort food. It's inexpensive, tasty, and filling. Had it last night.

They all sounded so good (I'm not fussy, I like food), I couldn't think of one until Ann said she couldn't stop eating banana pudding, and then I thought of cold tuna salad made with noodles, peas, onions and mayo with a little sugar, because I can't stop eating that, so that must be it.

It's still very cold here, and we have over a foot of snow on the ground. I just though of...Hot Chocolate! (No marshmallows, and made from scratch with Droste's cocoa, sugar and whole milk.) Some shortbread cookies wouldn't be amiss.

I hear you on the grilled cheese sandwiches. Of course they have to be cooked on a nice greasy grill to qualify as comforting.

Ah, nothing like cholesterol to satiate you. Did I ever mention my one claim to health? I have astounding cholesterol levels. My MD is terribly impressed. If I could find a way to take the *caolries* out of this stuff or to distribute the fat somewhere other than my middle...I could eat it all every day!

okay, i was getting hungry so had to go to my favorite lunch spot - one you can't do justice at home...it's a tiny, award winning bbq place. My absolute favorite thing is their carolina fries. It's fries, pulled pork (cooked in their smoker on site) and coleslaw all stacked in one yummy mess. You then have your choice of hickory, apple or hot bbq sauce.
Their motto is "we're not fancy, we're family" Love it.

Old fashioned Hamburger from a Bar N Grill with mustard, pickles and onions, served with fries and a thick chocolate malt. Although I can no longer eat that due to Diabetes, that is my idea of down home comfort.

ps my dad owned a fish n chip place and they had the best burgers and fries around. They didn't serve ice cream, only beer...so we had to go to the drugstore for the malts. Still good though.
