Do you have Bona finish or stain on your oak floors?

Would you mind showing me a picture? We are installing white oak in half the first floor,site finishing with Bona. The other half of the first floor will be refinished, it is we belive red oak. I would love a warm, caramel type color, no orange no red. Any suggestions for a stain for me? Have to decide by next week! Thank you

We had hardwood installed about 4 years ago. They used Glitsa stain in Chestnut with white oak floors. Here is what it looks like after about 4 years (with 2 dogs running on them). We have been happy with how it stood up over the past few years.

Kellienoelle, those are stunning floors. Combination of warmth and no red. It complicates things for me as i hadn't, until now, considered chestnut ( debating between jacobean/special walnut/provincial). Thanks for nothing ;)

I pretty much followed celticmoon's steps... (THANK YOU celticmoon!! :) My process: Remove doors. Remove hardware. We did leave hinges on and taped them off. (DH was afraid he'd never get them back on and didn't want to mess with getting new -- I picked my battles and went with it! ;) I lightly sanded mostly using sanding sponges which allowed me to get into the cut-outs better. My doors were VERY shiny so I sanded enough to get the shine off. Then tack clothed them, then mineral spirits. I put on a thick layer of General Finishes Gel Stain - JAVA. This stuff is so awesome. Then I wiped off. I left it on pretty thick... too thick. If I was to do it over I would definitely wipe off more because it took a loooong time to dry. I was trying to skip steps but I think 2 or 3 thin coats would have been better. It was a rainy weekend, too, so drying was tough in the first place. DH had rigged up a way for me to hang the doors by the hinges so I hung them to dry which enabled me to do fronts and backs. When they were finally dry I did a thin layer of General Finishes Gel Clear Coat. I spread it on until it all looked wet but wiped away any drips. Once dry I very lightly sanded, then tack clothed, then we put the doors back on. I did another clear coat with the doors up and left the doors open to dry. I've done a few touch ups here and there with a stain and a clear coat. I would highly recommend general finishes gel stain! I babied the cabs for a few days but my 3 and 5 year old kiddos have not and the color seems to be holding up perfectly.

I really appreciate these updates! It looks like the Bona products have really held up as far as color is concerned. We have LVP throughout and just purchased white oak stair treads. I tried and tried to match with stain but the yellow kept bleeding through. I’m now considering the Bona finish on my treads and keeping the natural oak look. Unfortunately the Bona is only sold in large sizes and I will probably use less than half of it. Your treads look really good! You said they were stained with minwax weathered oak. Do you happen to know if there was a sealer applied first or what the top coat was if any? I think that’s where I may be going wrong. Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated! No sure why you are using a floor finish on your shelving. Compatibility is hard to guess. Scuff it up with sandpaper, apply a coat of dewaxed shellac and you might be OK (or, you might not, only tine will tell) With all the wonderful non-yellowing finishes available from the likes of Target Coatings (my favorite) or General Finishes meant for furniture and cabinet work I don't know why you'd go this route. No high quality finishes that I'm aware of are "cheap", assuming you mean less that $25-30/qt. Oak, like many other woods, will naturally yellow over time under the finish no matter what you finish it with.

Hi! I am experiencing the same situation where my living room is equipped with red oak floors from 1950 when the house was built, and my kitchen is installed with new wood floors. One of the pain points is that it's hard to find stain that will blend two different floors together even though they're both red oak. Did you have the same problem?

Well, it has been 4 years, but those names ring a bell and must have been up for consideration. FYI, these have faded a bit over the years, but I like what they have faded to. I do like a darker stain too though, more like what they looked like when first done. So keep the fading a bit in mind when you choose!

I wish I had a photo to show you. We used Minwax English Chestnut on our stairs and lower level remodel. It is a rich, deep, true brown with no orange, red, or gray tones.

Upstairs, the floors were sanded and given three coats of Bona urethane over no stain. I didn't love the paler color, but the finish wore like iron.

On the main floor, we had the existing oak floors sanded and redone, using two coats of Minwax Cherry. Then we put new oak floors in the kitchen and had them matched to the rest. I do have photos showing those floors, if it's any help. They may be more orange than you want.

We used two parts neutral to one part jacobean and one part provincial. Our floor guy applied several large swatches (maybe 1 x 2 feet each) directly to the floor after it was sanded so we could see the options in our lighting, then he just sanded them off. This is standard around here and it really helped. I wouldn't hesitate to request it if I were you.

The reason we went with our final recipe is that we didn't want to go too dark since the skies are often gloomy here. We decided we liked emphasizing the grain. The neutral component kept the background lighter, while the jacobean/provincial brought out the grain without orange tones.
