any real cabinet makers in the Seattle area?

I am having an extremely difficult time finding old style kitchen cabinets with inset shaker doors. All of our local cabinet makers are installing frameless with fixes to make "country like" and "oldish style" cabinets using contemporary pre-made cabinetry. They are not cheap either, the cabinets just look that way. I love (but cannot afford),Crown Point. My kitchen is small. If I can find a good cabinet maker there are also two bathrooms and (dare I dream) the house realy should have a few built-ins. Several posters from places like Maine, and Vermont have shown pictures of wonderful cabinets...Any and all ideas welcome.

ck with the people at Seattle Salvage...they might be able to refer you. They have stores in Seattle and Everett now. I bought some cabinet doors from them once and fortunately found a cabinet maker (not in Seattle) to work them in to my cottage styled kitchen. Re-Store was another place I found old glass that he framed for doors. I have found business cards for cabinet makers in paint stores as well. Maybe another source for referrals.

Thank you bluerem, I called Seattle Salvage in Everett and I will run down there Tues when they open. Who knows, my kitchen is so small they might even have some cabinets that will work :). This cabinet thing has been a greater challenge than I would ever have imagined. In my area there is a LOT of speculation. Building a small house I realy want to stay in, within this spec. home market is realy hard.
Where is Re-store? Can you get me a phone nr. or something?

My former cabinet guy kept saying, "don't worry about it" and "I've been doing this for 30 years, trust me". OMG, needsometips08, I know exactly what you mean! I had a similar experience with the cabinet maker our designer recommended. I don't think she meant to come off that way but when I asked about thickness of drawer bottoms, she replied, "Don't worry, we know what we're doing." !!! I never implied she didn't. I only wanted to know what we'd be getting for our money. We're not going with that cabinet maker, btw. megpie77, which kind of soapstone do you have? I don't think we have as many options in the PNW (I'm in Portland) as there are in other parts of the country, which is a pity because I've always loved soapstone kitchens. Did you have any problems finding a fabricator? Your kitchen is lovely, btw.

Check out Pacific Crest, down in Kent/Sumner area. Not totally custom, but they will do any size vertically and horizontally for you, down to 1/8" increments. Huge variety of woods, finishes, and styles. They used to sell only to contractors and retail stores, but you can now buy directly from them. The customer service is exemplary, and the sales people very helpful. Can't recommend them enough.

The Costco Home Store in Kirkland used to carry Schrock but now only has Pacific Crest cabinets. They are a very nice frameless line made in the PNW. They are also sold at Lowes. I think the price point is generally higher than Schrock and they have more door styles & finishes available and can customize sizing. If your sister is interested, they usually have you make an appt and bring in your layout then they give you a ballpark price based on that. If you want to proceed, they charge a $200 measuring fee and they will also do installation if needed. I did price out Schrock cabinets at Kirkland when they had them and found them to be about the same discount as HD/Lowes (2/3 off retail). They have a Schrock cabinet display at the Tukwila store near Ikea. Definitely no displays at the regular Kirkland or Silverdale Costcos. Schrock is essentially the same as Thomasville (Home Depot), Kemper, Diamond (Lowes) and Somersby (buycabinets.com) so if she's interested might be worth checking out those avenues as well. I haven't read about too many people using Schrock but reviews on the Thomasville & Diamond lines seem to be positive.

I don't know anyone but I had good luck finding help on Angie's list here in Seattle (I don't work for them or have any conflict of interest). The one thing I noticed is that good help is busy as construction has picked up, and needed to be scheduled several months in advance. I scheduled my tile guy in Sept for a Nov install and one person we got an estimate from said they couldn't do it until after Christmas! I've also found contractors also take you more seriously when you say you found them on Angie's list- one even told me this was the case. I think the accountability helps.

So sorry I haven't responded sooner...been away. By now, you probably have found the REstore. It's in Ballard. I prefer the one in Bellingham if you care to make the drive. I find the prices better and the staff friendlier and more helpful. I just discovered another salvage place on line last night...in the SoHo district. Hope you had luck in Everett.

If you want to try online, check out www.cabinetrydirect.com. I'm looking into having them do inset beaded and left unfinished so I can paint. Their prices are listed. They offer a 5% discount for unfinished. I believe the inset is a 30% upgrade. For the few cabinets I need, it's not that bad on pricing.

Merry Ann, I'm looking for the same thing in Seattle (I also have a small kitchen, but not quite small enough to make Crown Point a possibility!) Did your find anyone--if so, I would love to hear who (you can email me off list if you want).
