Getting Ready to Go To A Funeral Today

Our son in laws Father passed away and the funeral was today. I am ready and waiting for our son in law and daughter to pick us up to go. My husband comes out just before time to leave, dressed in a tan shirt and old blue jeans he wears to work. I told him you aren't going to the funeral wearing those are you? I can't find my white shirt and my pants are all too big. I had told him to get his clothes ready last night that he was going to wear. I can't find any white shirts or my pants I wear! And why does your black sock have a hole on the top? Well, I couldn't get those socks apart to cut them apart with the scissors so I just yanked them and it made a hole. I searched his closet and no white shirts. He ends up putting on a pair of dress pants, pokes another hole in his belt and cinches his pants up. I think he has thrown away his white shirts or cut them up for rags to shine his quarters. I now have to sew up a hole in his good new black sock he got for Christmas plus get him a couple of dress shirts!

Life with husbands are so interesting! Take a deep breath. Sympathy to your son in law over the loss of his father.

That sounds like a familiar story. DH puts on the same old stretched out, faded, tired clothes until I'm ready to hide them.

Did your DH lose weight? It would be a good idea to get him a nicer outfit for when these things come along so you won't have the last-minute crisis. Make a trip to Penneys.

Hello everyone and thanks for your compliments. I had to bring the plants inside last night. It was 36 degrees when I went to bed and awoke to temps of 30 degrees and a pretty good layer of frost on my windshield this morning. We get decent temperatures for a few days at a time and then a single night of frost. It's been that way for the past month. We even had temps in the eighties one day last week. I need to check the forecast for tonight.....not sure if I can leave the plants out tonight. I'm thinking about taking Friday off from work so I can get a head start on setting things up. Still have too much to do before planting. Jay

Oh I can relate. DH had a grandmother and an old maid aunt...guess who got all their stuff. His folks had an apartment in NYC and the old house here. Guess who got all their stuff. Then my Mom had to clean out their old house after Dad passed...50+ years of accumulation and both were pack rats. Guess who got a lot of their stuff. She moved into a condo here and had a house in FL besides. When she passed, guess who got all her stuff from those 2 places. Let alone our own stuff and moving out of the old house and into the new house. Is it any wonder we left the upstairs in the new house just attic space? Any wonder that it looks like a goodwill store? And the tension one suffers between, this is still good, how can I throw it out...but do I really need 14 wooden spoons? And then you get this weird support for keeping it...like when our can opener busted and we just went to the attic to get another one...and there's still another up there... And trying to get rid of stuff that was in DH's family triggers this strong reaction in him, like a hoarder, that I'm not tossing a dishtowel, but a piece of his family history and how dare I! So I know that an awful lot of this stuff I'll have to deal with once he's gone. We too are orphans with no children, nieces or nephews and ends of the line. So I know a lot of this stuff will be meaningless to many. We both have cousins though who have children so will probably pass some stuff down to them. The rest will just have to go. And yes, looking at photos of people who looked so young and carefree, and knowing ex post how their lives ended, often in such sad and painful ways. It is truly heart wrenching. A labor required of those of us who are the end of the line. Not easy, I know. But there it is. On the other side though, we've been working at cleaning out over 60 years of accumulation and mess in the barn...while it is dirty nasty work, there is something wonderful about looking at the space that you just cleaned up, all the room you've made, finding treasures you didn't know you had amongst the detritus of accumulation, and that sense of accomplishment at having made a tremendous difference. So there's that too.

Sue, it has a heat pump, but also radiant heat in the ceiling, which I love. The realtor didn't know if it still worked or not, though. She's going to find out. I did have my house inspected but I don't think it did me a lot of good. There were still problems with it after I moved in that he never mentioned in his report. I have looked at a lot of houses in town, though, none recently other than this one. There aren't alot of big houses in the area I want to move. If there are, they're a story and a half which I don't want, even though they are super cute. At my age and looking forward, I don't want anything with stairs. The house is nice, but I have some problems with it. The closets all are loose on the bottom, not attached to floor tracking. Thought that was kinda weird. There are lots of closets, though, and I love that. The floor slopes in a few rooms, like the master bathroom, kitchen and garage. They redid the flooring in the kitchen and dining area but didn't cut the tile right, or put edging or anything around the edges so there are big ugly gaps near the edge where the flooring and cabinets/walls should meet. It's an old house, built before 1978 so I didn't think it was going to be perfect. I do love the separate rooms, living room, den, dining room, laundry room, and the bedrooms are much bigger than mine. I'd only have to run one line of fencing to keep the dogs in the backyard. There is a separate area completely fenced off but I would use that area for a garden. The hardwood floor is beautiful. It also has new windows. I also love the built in desk in the den, built in shelves in that same room around the fireplace. I think I'm going to call about getting pre-approved and then maybe go back and look at it again before I have an inspection done or go any further.

I was in Eau Claire when that storm hit and it was no where near as bad as in Burnett County. My surgeon and his wife were on a motorcycle trying to beat the storm home and a tree fell on them. They survived with minimal damage to either other than some horrible road rash. They are doing counseling at work for the people involved in the little girls case as it was very disturbing and sad. My heart goes out to you and to her family.

Were his socks really a big deal? most people wear shoes to go out of the house nevermind to a funeral...one of which i am probably going to have to attend soon seeing as a close family member is in the hospital in serious condition...

(((Sue)))...my condolences for your SIL's loss...and I'm right there with you on the hubster...We can dress them up...we just can't take them out anywhere...We went out to dinner to a new little resturant the other night...dh is wearing a brown sweatshirt with bleach stains all over it...of course it's is favorite and he's got a gazillion in the closet in much nicer condition...I'm getting my hands on that sweatshirt and its in the trash pile before noon today!

My dh knows to wear good clothes. Problem is... he is color blind. He usually is cooperative when I suggest he change his little ensembles.

please give the entire family our condolences. i'm sure they wouldn't care what anyone wore but that they came to be with the family...

if you need good dress shirts, and have a kohls nearby, watch the ads...the oxford cloth wear well, no ironing (if you pull them out of the dryer in time) and are often under $20 or less, on sale...

Sorry for your family and like the others, I doubt anyone will care what he has on.

My Beloved and I laugh all the time about the way he dresses. For the last 50 years he had to wear a suit and dress shirt and tie and he is not about to even come close except for very special occasions. He goes to town to get gas for his mower looking like his pants haven't been washed in a month and the other day he was having an issue with his sandals hurting his foot so he put on a pair of socks and said......How bad does the sandal sock thing look and I told him......You are almost 72 you can wear anything you want. I said if it bothers anyone they'll just be whispering...Look at that old fool over there wearing socks with sandals and let me ask do you really care......Obviously he doesn't..and as long as I know he is clean, I don't care what he wears either or how dirty his work pants are............

I am sorry for your family's loss.

I'm with Ruthie on the fashion. No one will care and if they do then their priorities are off. They should be focused on the funeral ,not what others are wearing.

I'm sorry for your family's loss ( including hubby's wardrobe). Unfortunately, funerals become a segment of our social life as we age. I've been to three this year; sang with the choir at one. The problem is I'm in the age group where statistically, the next funeral could be mine. I am not going to concern myself about my wardrobe for that one.

Sorry for your in -laws family's loss. I don't think it's important what one wears to a funeral or wake. Just showing up to comfort the family is important enough.(My husband wore food-stained clothes to a wake.)
