Recommendations on new freezer

Our Frigidaire freezer may soon need to be replaced. The replacement has to be an upright. Sub-zero looks inviting but is soooo expensive. What experience have you had and what freezer would you recommend? It has to be reliable, which our Frigidaire is not. Only 3 yrs old and repaired 3 times. We need something trouble-free. Suggestions?

I think I have a Kenmore. (It was given to me so I can't remember exactly.) It's probably about 7 years old. Kenmores are made by another major major manufacter, but Sears puts the Kenmore label on them.

The feature I like about the freezer is that it isn't self defrosting. The freezer in my refrigerator is and I hate it. I've lost a lot of food because of the freezing and thawing.

Having just purchased a chest freezer in the last few months, I would have to recommend a chest freezer. When you open the door they don't spill all their heat, and from what I've seen _none_ of them are self-defrosting. The uprights tend to self defrost, but chests don't. Mine has something called a "flash defrost" where, when you tell it to, it runs hot liquid through the refrigerator coils, and you open a drain in the bottom to let the water out. Of course, you've taken your food out of it first...

I've heard good things about it, in a couple months I'll know for myself. We haven't had to defrost yet.

I had narrowed it down to the Miele and the Sub zero. Both excellent reputations and well built. To me, it just seemed the layout and design of the SZ was tired and the Miele was modern,bet rter lighting, better laid out and stronger materials. Was a little more expensive than the SZ so I was initially hesitant, but every time I went back to the store to check them again and again, the Miele was just so much nicer. As for your second Question, you put them side by side and there is a kit you need to buy for a few hundred $ to join them. Mine won't be delivered and installed for another 3 weeks but can't wait.

eenie meenie miney mo and cross your fingers. We went through this last year. Fingers still crossed. And blanked out the whole experience for the most part. Did research but as mentioned above they are all about the same, then not. So far so good with what we ended up with. It is just too big, huge. They sent the wrong one but close enough. I've not had one in the past to compare, except a horrid small chest type in my vacation home that needs defrosting monthly. And a countertop upright that was free from a friend that works great so that one will go to that home. In short, we ordered a number of times with e-mail confirmations, then out of stock...repeat. We used Lowes and they we very helpful with all the troubles. I find it easy to keep organized with some added baskets that i can pull out onto a counter next to it. The door itself holds all my spices nuts grains...the main reason for my choice. As mentioned, assess your needs and start from there. If we purchased in bulk like ducks chickens turkey or end up with a moose tag a chest freezer would make sense. The wire shelving in most uprights would not hold or store or even makes sense for storing big bulk things. For garden harvest and meats packaged in meal portions i think uprights work really well. Upright column freezer recommendations

Instead of a freezer chest, we are planning to put an upright column freezer in our walk-in pantry off the kitchen (new build). Any brand recommendations (24 or 30 inches wide)? We will have a Sub-Zero fridge in the kitchen but I am not sure I want to pay at that level for a storage freezer.

We gave away our appartment sized chest freezer after 32 years. We gave it to a friends mother who lived in the country. That was 7 years ago and she is still using it! Based on our experience we would have to buy another Kenmore....even though we don't know who's making the Kenmore now or then! Maybe their requirements are high...

A little late on this, but....
Service technician for Sears told me that Kenmore's actual maker depends on the model. Most of their higher end models (but not all) were Amanas in the past. Unfortunately, Amana was bought by Maytag in the last couple of years and Maytag made many changes. per this person, "Maytag doens't know squat about cooling systems." We considered selling ours when we moved since it was almost as expensive to move it as to buy another. We have an Amana made by Amana. Tech told us "Better hold on to it. It's solid."
