Please recommend fridge and freezer onlies

Hi, i am in early stages of planning my new kitchen. After using a counterdepth french door for 3 years, i find i need lots more space. One thing i know i definitely want are fridge only and freezer only appliances. Am thinking also to do integrated panels. Freezer should make ice. I do like the door alarm too. Other than this, i dont think i need any special functions, just lots of space for food and reliability. any recs?

Just did the research and decided on Miele side by sides. Beautiful and built like tanks. Make sure you see them in person though, as the pictures online don't do them justice.

I also got Miele, but if you don't want "special" you might like Thermador. SubZero are also top notch, and many people are very happy with Liebherr. Choose the one with the interior you like best and the price that suits you.

Thank you all so much! This is really helpful. A2gemini, I love the yogurt story, lol! While this fridge was supposed to be for the house we're building with my parents for them to live in, I got the "brilliant" idea a couple of days ago to give them my JennAir bottom freezer single door, and replace it with the freestanding Viking bottom freezer single door that I've always liked. A way to get a "discount" of sorts ;). I just found out it's discontinued, though, and the local distributor has just 3 left. Any opinions on Viking fridges, or on buying a discontinued model? Thanks again for all these responses!

We are considering all the same issues as this poster. Our fridge will be on the far left of the row of cabinets in a galley kitchen, so it seems that opening a single door left-hinge fridge will be more convenient than an FD. I also am very concerned about energy efficiency and durability, so I have some questions about how well the FD models will seal long term. I have no interest in throwing my $2000 fridge out in 5 years! We did find a GE model that seems to fit the bill: PDCS1NBWLSS GE Profile Energy Star 21.1 Cu. Ft. Stainless Bottom-Freezer Refrigerator - Left Hinged. We have not bought this yet but are still shopping around. We want a modest sized one like this (again to avoid wasting energy for space we rarely need), but there may be something similar in a larger size. Good hunting! Good luck!

I need to make the same decision. :) I do not know the cost of the same base units from Gaggenau. Perhaps someone could post them if they get them before me. I think the layout in the Gagg is better than Miele or Thermador. The UI always seems better on the Gaggenau, too (based on reading the operating guides).

I have the Electrolux Icon all fridge (2 of those) and 1 all-freezer. (Electrolux is the parent company of Frigidaire, who also makes the Kenmore). They aren't big, but I've had full depth fridge/freezers and these give me more room with more accessible reach and better visibility. Cu ftage measurements don't tell you much unless its 'usable cubic feet,' and I think counter-depth, plus good organization (which might vary from Frigidaire to Kenmore to Electrolux because of different features) helps the usability. You'll want to compare the different names, in person if possible, to see which of those has the shelf options, bins, etc. that best suit your mother-in-law's needs. By the way, we have 2 of the fridges, because we have 8 kids. It's rare, even in our house that both fridges are completely full at the same time, so 1 would probably serve most more modest sized households pretty well. The freezer, if she's used to a full size freezer, might be smallish.

Hi JohnnyToronto and pllog, thanks for your input. what made you decide on Miele over other brands? I am not familiar with miele's reputation regarding refrigeration, though my dream dishwasher is miele (and i also love their vacuums). was wondering also, do each of the fridge and freezer have side-by-side doors or do you put them together to look like a side by side fridge?

I had narrowed it down to the Miele and the Sub zero. Both excellent reputations and well built. To me, it just seemed the layout and design of the SZ was tired and the Miele was modern,bet rter lighting, better laid out and stronger materials. Was a little more expensive than the SZ so I was initially hesitant, but every time I went back to the store to check them again and again, the Miele was just so much nicer. As for your second Question, you put them side by side and there is a kit you need to buy for a few hundred $ to join them. Mine won't be delivered and installed for another 3 weeks but can't wait.
