I'm having surgery...but it is embarrassing to me

It was difficult to see a dr about my problem. I put it off for many years. It came to the point that I couldn't ignore it any longer.

I could be off work 4-6 weeks. It's likely, since I have a very physical job.

I'll "enjoy" an overnight stay in the hospital...even more reason to dread it, not to mention the pain afterwards.

What kind of surgery am I having???

Hemorrhoid removal. They are real bad.

So how embarrassing was the doctor appt? I've had them off and on since having Bradley and considered going to the doc but didn't for the same reason as you. Knock on wood, I haven't had any trouble for a while, but I dread a flare-up.

My Mom and my Best Friend had the surgery. Both claim that the Hemorrhoids returned.

There is nothing worse than being uncomfortable. Ask the Doctor how you prevent them from coming back.

Sorry you have to go through this.

Well, after I turned the pile yesterday I got to reading more and figured I probably don't have enough greens. I called Starbucks and asked them to save what they had. I brought home about 50 or 60lbs of coffee grounds! It's a shame I didn't do that BEFORE I turned the pile! Aw, well; it keeps me moving and I get a great workout! I still have lots of things stockpiled, so now I just need to figure out exactly where I want another new bed. I'm going to do that, as I don't think my body could stand removing this thick sod again! The people that lived here before put mega effort into this lawn and it shows. Now here I am trying to get rid of it! Oh! Can we compost squirrels?? (Just kidding!) Thinking ahead for my tomato harvest...

It seems like the answer should be an easy one, but it's complicated and variable. Container VOLUME is most important when you are using a well-aerated soil that supports no, or almost no perched water (the water that occupies the lower part of containers with heavy soils). When you are using a soil that DOES support a perched water column, container shape, and more specifically depth, comes into play. If a soil supports a 6" perched water column and you use a 12" deep container, nearly half the soil will be saturated & w/o aeration until the water evaporates or the plant uses it; but, if you are using an 18" deep container, only 1/3 of the soil will be supporting perched water. Therefore - tall containers have a lower % of perched water, are easier to grow in, and less likely to be part of the cause of root rot issues. All plants, regardless of their natural tendency in the wild, will occupy the entire soil mass of a container, as long as it is well aerated. Some in situ plants have a tendency toward shallow roots because they find the right mix of air and water there. If you plant them in a 10 foot deep container of well-aerated soil, they will quickly colonize the entire 10 foot depth with roots. It was a good question. Al

SAA203: May I suggest that you choose a neutral color for the time being for your kitchen? When I say neutral, I do not mean gold. I, too, have BC floors and a lot of cool grey colors in my granite, but warm whites. I wanted a gold color, too, but decided to mute it out and wait until my backsplash was installed. Plus, my floors darkened considerably in just a few months, so I'm really glad I didn't add the gold now. You add gold to those walls and your cabinets will really start to 'yellow out'. I was shocked to see how much 'yellow' they picked up off of the walls even with Clam Island, and it's not yellow. I am going to do a bit more painting now that I am getting ready to choose window treatements and believe that with my backsplash and granite to either beige up the walls a bit since I have brown glaze on the cabinets with Parisian Taupe OR either go a touch more gold with Toasted Cashew, both by Behr....and both look good. I love the SW blonde. I got a sample the other day and it's just too gold for my kitchen. I don't have a lot of natural light and cannot afford to go any darker than the Toasted Cashew. My point: I would really wait until you have your backsplash chosen before I would commit to such a strong gold in your kitchen, unless you know that you'll just love it and that it won't compete with what you use on your backsplash. When I got my backsplash, it had a lot more rose to the stone that I imagined, so I know the SW Blonde would not have worked. Clam Island or Parisian Taupe are winners hands down and you just can't go wrong type of colors. The taupe has just a bit more pink, which I think compliments the brown/red tones in the cabinets and flooring; hence why I'm thinking I may go with this eventually in my kitchen after all of the cabinets are done. However, Clam Island is just a perfect neutral. It has enough depth to be a brown, enough gold to work with gold carpets and not overpower other colors. It's no longer in Behr's Color paint chips, but the color is in their computer at HD. I've used Clam Island in several homes as my 'base' color and I come back in and add depth or lighten. It's definitely not a beige or tan or offwhite. It's a lovely base color. I mixed it half and half on some of my ceilings, too. Here is Clam Island in different rooms so you can see how it goes with so many colors. (I think it does.) Ignore the green tint on the cabinets...we've redone them. Notice the colors in the tile and mosaic...they have the tones of the Clam Island that I used on the walls in my kitchen. I don't check in here very often either, but I posted the following some months ago: Thought I'd drop by and share my experience on this thread. I'm eight years post-menopausal. My main symptoms were hot flashes (w/night sweats) and emotional swings that included some impressive rages. At the time I was also having heart palpitations and some chest pains, and had been diagnosed with lupus. In addition, I started menopause about 35 lb. overweight and added ten more once it was underway. I argued with three doctors who wanted me to take HRT. I felt, as I do now, that for most women menopause is like childbirth: a natural process rather than a medical condition. Although my mother died before reaching menopause, I felt I would come through it in better shape if I didn't mess with nature. I added hawthorne with motherwort to my supplements, which helped with the palpitations, and took a couple of doses of a homeopathic remedy (essence of pit viper!) for the rages. Other than that, the biggest changes I made were to my lifestyle. I traded my "healthy" high-carb, mostly vegetarian diet for a low-carb, high-protein one and lost my excess weight. I upped my consumption of tofu and soy milk for isoflavones. I joined a gym. And I went out and got a full-time job. These many years later, I am no longer going to gym, but I'm taking up yoga. I had to quit my job to take care of my husband, but I'll eventually go back. Almost all the weight is still off. The hot flashes are long gone, along with the rest of the symptoms. I stopped the hawthorne, etc., ages ago, but still take vitamin supplements. I still eat (and enjoy) the soy foods. I'm often told that I look a lot younger than I am. My health isn't perfect, but I'm convinced HRT would have made things worse rather than better. I'm so glad I didn't listen to those doctors. Kris, another objection I had to HRT is that the most popular prescription, Premarin, is created from the urine of pregnant horses, resulting in a horrendous situation for the rigidly confined mares and the otherwise unwanted foals they are forced to produce on a regular and rapid basis. My DSis went through that a few months ago. She suffered with hemorroids forever before finally admitting it to a doctor. The procedure went smoothly and she had only a little discomfort for a couple of days.

Now she swears by drinking lots of water and eating bran flakes everyday. And I have to admit that bran flakes have made a huge (and comfortable) change in my daily habits. I always buy Honeynut Bran flakes and they are delicious!

I guess you got the worst part over. Just know you are not the only one with that problem, and they've seen many. Glad you will feel better soon with no moe flareups.

Yeah, I know they've seen many butts, but not mine. Well, now they have. When it comes to the "backdoor" I don't like to let anyone or anything in...LOL!!

For anyone having this problem I would say go now rather than later because I believe there's a less involved procedure if you do it early. Instead of a few days of discomfort, it will be a few weeks of recovery. A friend of mine waited too long and had the more involved surgery and I was shocked by how long she was out of work and she had a desk job (I'm not sure it matters in this case whether you're moving or sitting at work with this kind of problem).

Don't worry, doctors and nurses know that people are embarrassed. You are not alone there and they will try and help you feel at ease.

Just think of how much better you are going to feel once it is over.

Is there some reason they didn't try the newer laser treatment first? It is done in a doctor's office.

"An infrared light provides a 1 to 2 second burst of light which cuts off the circulation to the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink."

It doesn't sound like any fun no matter how it gets taken care of.

I had painful hemorrhoids only once. I couldn't even go to work. I would have welcomed surgery, anything for relief. I took a lot of hot baths and they healed up and receeded. If it ever happens again, I'll head straight to the dOctor. Good luck, and let us know when it's over. I'm crossing my fingers for you!

As my doctor once told me...you leave your dignigty at the door of the hospital, they've seen it all! Good luck...and I don't blame you for being embarrassed....I'm the same way, but I have never had hemorroids, knock on wood. LOL.....

Every time I've had a colonoscopy the Dr. tells me he removed any hems that he found and I didn't even realize that I HAD any. LOL I don't know if they are new ones or the same ones that have come back. I'll have to ask him next time. Anyway, I was never even sore and wouldn't have known he'd removed them if he hadn't told me. I guess I've been lucky.

While working in physical therapy, my co-workers sister had a baby. Her "roids" were bad! My friend took the infrared machine home and with only a couple of treatment, they disappeared. Having children had aggravated her "roids". My got really bad yrs. ago when I started lifting weights. Now, they come and go and I use really hot water to help them shrink back. Works well, though sometimes you need the big guns!

Diane, soon it will all be "behind" you. Sorry, I couldn't resist. Soon you will be pain free, and that will be great.

On a more serious vein, I know of several friends of friends where the person, all women, had symptoms of serious colon problems. Unfortunately, they were embarrassed to go to the doctor for months. They were found with advanced colon cancer, and hopefully will survive, but may not. I'm in no way equating this to your situation. I just wanted to mention it in case someone was postponing checking on a serious condition.

I had the surgery as soon as i delivered my second son.Mine were so bad during the last weeks of that pregnancy,that i literally could not sit.That was back in 1961.

I suffered from hemmroids for many years. I had the laser treatment and it made them a million times worse. I also had the surgery. The pain I had afterwards for 10 days was excruciating. Going to the washroom was really a treat. Soon after the surgery the hemmroids returned. I was crying to my doctor, I thought they couldn't come back.

He told me to cut out ALL popcorn, nuts, seeds and corn. I used to eat a lot of popcorn. I didn't think it would matter but I tried it anyway. After that the hemmroids were gone! The only time they return is if I eat a handful of nuts.

The best treatment is a good diet and long soaks in the tub.
I'm sorry to scare you about the surgury but that was my experience.

(((((Stacy!))))) Oh I feel for you girl! I had the same surgery when I was 19. On the way home from the Dr.'s the Novacaine started to wear off and by the time I got there my Mom had to help me crawl up our front steps - crying the whole way, I was! Then again after I had my first baby, she was 10 lbs. and 7 oz... 'nuff said... Now I take extra fiber EVERY SINGLE DAY... It works and I don't have them anymore, thank God. Get better quick and maybe try the fiber BEFORE you have the surgery so 'things' will go smoother when it's all over. It really does help. And yes they do come back! That's why I take the extra fiber... You poor thing, let us know how it goes. Nancy

It can't be anymore embarrassing than having him check the front end every 3 months after surgery to remove a cancerous spot on the bladder. The problem is this month checkup found a new spot and I have to go through the surgical procedure again. This is a cute Indian doctor, probably 30 years younger than I.

I have to chime in here about the fiber business. A friend I have long since lost touch with had a terrible time with same after her child was born, and the doctor kept telling her to eat more fiber and drink the fiber drink. It got worse and on her own, she realized that too much fiber at that touchy time was exacerbating the problem. She backed off the heavy-duty fiber and felt much better. I'd say be good with the fiber when the hemorroides are in check, but be careful about too much if they are currently giving you a lot of pain. I know, not conventional wisdom, but it's what this gal went through, so I thought I'd mention it.

After not experiencing any hemmroid problems for years wouldn't ya know mine came back yesterday. I've been sneeking a lot of nuts here and there so that's probably the cause. Oh well, off to the bathtub.
