Now For The Real Test

Hi everyone,

This Sunday afternoon, I'll be going to the cast party at my local theatre and have decided to make Pink Lady Cake for the occasion. This time, I'll put strawberries on top of the Cool Whip. I'm thinking of leaving them unhulled/capped. I made the cake today, but it's not frosted yet. I'm waiting until Sunday until I frost the cake.

I haven't decided yet but I might make a batch of my gram's lemonade to take along as well. I have been meaning for them to taste my cooking for a little while. Now I think they'll love me a little even more lol.

Sounds great, Brad. What's the show?
I am direction the fall play at our Community Theatre....The Mousetrap by Agatha Christie. Wish you were close enough to bake a cake for our cast party!

Hi Linda C,

The show is "Generations of Broadway", which is a concert featuring several Playhouse cast and crew singing songs of different Broadway musicals. Sunday's the last day of it and the party is afterwards. I am not performing in it and if you heard my singing, you'd know why lol. I am just a volunteer there, doing whatever they ask me to.

I have heard of that play, but I've never seen it. After this production, we'll have two more shows for the season. Moon Over Buffalo is up next then it'll be A Christmas Carol for the holidays.

Would you like the recipe, Linda? I'd be more than happy to share it again :-).

Our local theatre is small, it only houses 77 or so audience members. It's an old church and they've been putting on shows for 30 years.

what is the real test for when peppers are ready?

I use a stem test. If I can lift up the fruit and the stem gives way from the plant, then it's ready to pick. If you lift up the fruit & stem and there's no give, the pepper is not ready to pick yet. Hungarian Hot Wax usually go from green to yellow to orange to red when ripe.

Gary: We spent an entire season and exhausted ourselves in the labor of constructing and insulating my GH foundation in order to give it every possible protection from the cold. But before we even started, I came here for advice and after weeks of debate, was finally won over by what I thought seemed the most rational and took Nathan's counsel. So if anyone could be smug with an "I told you so!" it would be Nathan. He led- I only followed. We heat with nat. gas, not oil, but I agree that the cost of all energy will continue to rise. That's why it's so important to construct to use as little of it as possible, starting with tight insulation in the right places for the greatest effectiveness, coupled with energy effecient heating/cooling devices, regardless if they are active, passive or, most realistically for the technology currently available to average homeowners; a combination of both. However, the type of system that you can employ in Florida simply won't work in the deep hard freezes of No. Illinois. Each region and climate has it's own special conditions and each GH owner their own special desires for their own GH use. I wanted a GH I could use year round, keeping it close to the same temps as a basement laundry room that had become so crowded with plants and fish tanks I couldn't keep up with the laundry, so something had to go. Although I'm nowhere near as dedicated a gardener as most people here, I do love to putter with plants, so my solution was a GH in which I could keep both plants and fish regardless of the weather, and by following Nathan's directions for the foundation and wall insulation necessary for MY use in MY climate- it worked- just as he said it would. Now Gary: will you please go over to the Aquarium forum, and answer my question about garden soil in fish tanks? You have apparently solved an aquatic plant problem and I really would like to learn how you did it.

You can get Benedryl that is dye-free, but it is hard to find. You will be amazed at how many things have Red 40, like bar-b-que sauce, yogurt, many medicines. One brand of cake mix has it on the label for both yellow and chocolate cake. Then of course, all the red and pink things like jello, candy, some jelly, canned cherries, cherry pie filling, many toppings, ice cream, mixes with artificial berries. It's everywhere. A small percentage of people can taste red dye and it gives food a bitter taste to them. I am one of those people, so I have never been big on eating "red" things that other people think taste great. That is probably why I am not dead. I remember getting sick as a child on a desert that had red jello in it, and once ended up in the emergency room after taking a common (pink) med. In those days, I think I had to get a lot of it before I had a real problem. I always had problems after I would fly because I always took a pink motion sickness pill. I didn't know that everyone else didn't have gas, bloating, and diarrhea after flying. LOL Since I tend to get dizzy easily I had taken a lot of pink motion sickness meds before I discovered Meclizine. Also check any kind of vitamins you may take. Beware of anything red, pink or orange. I do really well most of the time, but occasionally when eating out I will get something without knowing it. If I get very much, I will have severe cramping within minutes. I practically live in the bathroom for the next two hours because my system will just try to "flush" it out. In addition, I have pains in my heart. During a very serious attack I will just be freezing and can't get warm. I sit in a hot tub of water, and keep running it hot until I finally warm up. I shake like I am having a siezure. Do you do any of these things? When it started to get so bad about 10 or 12 years ago, I thought I had some serious stomach or bowel disorder. Then I would get better and be fine for a few days, so I would think well, maybe not. If it does turn out that it is red dye, we are not alone. More and more people each year and learning that it bothers them. I am not a drinker, but I read an article about a lady being taken to the emergency after having a drink with grenadine. I hope this is not what is wrong, but at least if it is, you can control it. You will have to give up a few things, and maybe prepare more things from scratch, but you will soon learn what to avoid. Good luck. Carol

Marble testing in progress... why we're NOW not going with marble
Q

The cost to refinish marble countertops will be based on size, condition of stone(how severe is the scracthing, etching and or staining, cracks, chips, etc)type of stone(darker stones and some limestones can be tricky to refinish)time and materials. Special pricing if we change the finish from polished to honed(easier and reasonably priced) or honed to polished(which is impossible to do to granite on site- very-difficult to do on marble(can be pricey). Our pricing on an average kitchen(60-80sqft) with normal wear and etching will start at around $650.00 and up. Larger kitchens with multiple islands and multiple countertops and other areas over 100 sq ft can that can be done in a day will start $900.00 and up. Pricing will vary region to region. Stone refinishing is one of those trades where experience is very important. I have been doing this since 2003 and still learn something everyday. While some stones are easier to work on others can be a serious undertaking. Not to mention the possibility of damaging fixtures back splashes, cabinets etc. Other issues could be dust or water containment and proper masking techniques so appliances, wallpaper, furniture and fabrics are protected . So While I am sure that a very handy person could do or try to refinish the stone there is the question of purchasing and using the proper equipment. I think in the long run it is cheaper to hire a bona -fide refinisher with references. Stu Rosen www.mbstonecare.com www.stoneshine.com

Hi Brad, to make the strawberries look really speccy, if you like, warm some red jam (strawberry for preference) and thin with a tiny bit of water if it doesn't get runny. Brush the strawberries with a thin layer of warmed jam before placing on top of your cake. They will look really shiny and red and keep better.

I'd rethink leaving the strawberries unhulled/capped. To me that's kind of like leaving the tails on shrimp: IMO if it's meant to be finger food, great. If not, don't make it fussy to eat.

But I'm sure it'll be a hit either way. Have fun!

Oh, I like leaving the hulls on, it adds that little touch decoratively IMO, but only if the hulls are fresh and green.

Thank you, colleenoz and foodonastump!

I think what I'll do is if the caps are fresh and green, I'll leave them on, if not, off they go! I'll have to remember the jam "polish" for the strawberries for future projects :-).

Nope, you won't bring any leftovers home and they will ask you to volunteer all the time now!

I was a volunteer when my girls were in "annie", my job was to keep all the orphans where they were supposed to be. At the end they gve me a tshirt that said "Orphan Goddess" on it, LOL.

It was lots of fun, but no one baked us a cake! We should have aksed you.

Well, I'm back and what a blast it was today! After the show we went out to one of the other volunteer's house and it was just so much fun :D. The verdict on the cake and lemonade: They LOVED it! I do have few slices left, anybody want one? ;)

Annie, I'd be happy to bake a cake for you or any of you folks here on the forum ;).

pink warm mama 1, aww thank you! lol I was joking about them liking me even more. Anytime I spend with them, I feel like I'm with family :).

lpinkmountain, these strawberries came from Wal-Mart, but oh my gosh are they ever good!

Oh and the lemonade recipe I have down to an exact science. For a gallon, it's three lemons and 1 1/2 cups of sugar.

Annie, talking about Orphan Goddess:

A few years back our community theater did 'Wizard of Oz'. I helped backstage doing odds and ends. We had a couple of women whose job was to keep the Munchkins occupied so they got on stage on time and were not wreaking havoc when they were off stage. How to list these volunteers in the program?

I suggested 'Munchkin Wranglers', and that's how they were referred to in the program.
