Head to Head Marble Test With Photos. Surprise Ending!
Comments (32)I'm one of the many gardenwebbers trying to decide if marble countertops are right for me and my family. Inspired by sfmomof2, I took a 10" round carrara marble cheese server (purchased years ago from RH) and spread lemon juice all over it. The shiny, highly polished finish, which had withstood years of wiping down with water and melting slices of brie and espoisses, almost instantly etched. The surprise: I loved the etchings! It gave the slab a beautiful, matte finish and old-worldy look. i.e. it looked even more like marble. (I'm starting to think that the "Meg Ryan" technique is the way to go.) Now I just have to decide that I'm OK with that look for an entire island top. (I'm seriously considering the marble-top "French kitchen island" at Crate and Barrel.) I'm curious if there are other etched marble lovers on the kitchen site....See MoreMarble gets edge--more kitchen progress pictures
Comments (44)Hi Becky, and thank you! The painting is a very daunting job as I'm quickly learning. I'd welcome your help, but it really wouldn't pay. We do have a Restoration Hardware near us, two actually, but they only keep a few items in stock, and often in only one finish. They really are a catalogue store. The showrooms exist primarily to give you a look at the offerings and sell small items. Lately we've questioned their direction a little. The furniture pieces are so huge and quite coarse in terms of finish. We still love their hardware and bathroom fittings, but for the price you could almost buy boutique items or Waterworks fixtures. So yes, we've often ordered online. Be sure to read the fine print. The markups on Canadian orders could almost be considered usurious. We've had cabinet hardware, bathroom vanity, lighting, faucets, mirror, and towel bars all delivered in good shape. At least our dollar is strong right now, so the bite won't hurt quite so much....See MoreMarble countertops, marble floor too much?
Comments (11)Don't get me wrong, we love wood floors. But 10 years later they look bad...very BAD. I mean it's embarrassing to have people over it's so bad. It just seems a shame to put something in that 10 years later will require my parents to move all the furniture out of their house again so that the floors can be refinished! We definitely like the marble floors with minimal veining - it's way too much for us to have all those gray carrara stripes going in all directions. She actually was thinking we'd have to get the heated flooring. I guess we just need to look for a warmer grayish floor that won't clash with the carrara counters. We also thought of marble floors in the kitchen and wood everywhere else? It's a total open floor plan, though, so we would need nice transitions. Anyone ever used these metal edges you see in the tile stores (link posted below)? I just held the marble tile up to the store display...you have to imagine a matching wood floor on the other side. PS - How do I paste in an actual photo? The instructions/help indicate there is supposed to be a "browse" button on the "preview" step of posting my message. Am I blind? I don't see anything indicating posting a photo when I preview... Here is a link that might be useful: metal edging...See MoreWant to see granite, marble, or a marble sink? Many Pics & a ??
Comments (18)palimpsest your link didn't work but I googled the sinks. They are beautiful but probably too pricey given the investment we've already made in plumbing. I'll ask my plumbing person to look into getting me a good price. Thanks! bostonpam the faucet cannot be mounted on the side because the sink is too long and the faucet would be over the cabinet and there would be no way to accommodate plumbing. That was the first suggestion we tried. sprtphntc, I was and am definitely very happy with Imperial. I was going to email and thank you for recommending them today when I had time. So, thanks :) oldbat2be, the TV is actually in the mirror. Like this except we have a frame for our mirror that matches our cabinets. The TV disappears when not in use and it just looks like a mirror:...See Morempagmom (SW Ohio)
