Yes, I remember them. I used to always write the same thing when I left a note:

I was here and you were gone.
Now you're here and I am gone.

Yep - we had one when I was growing up, because my dad was the town cobbler. If my dad wasn't home, the nuns would leave their shoes on the front porch with a note in the box, telling him what the shoes needed.

Sure do. Ours was shaped like a house and you opened the door to get the pencil on a string to write the note.

I remember those little Leave-a-note wooden houses that held a pad of paper and a small pencil and hung by the front door. I've not seen any like it in many years.

Yeah I remember those. My Dad had one in his basement workshop. Only used it to hold a key for the door lock (never locked and only one key anyway).

I imagine it was thrown away or else sold at his auction a few years ago. I would have liked to have had that. Actually several things I would have liked but I wasn't told about the sale of his house and auction.... Oh well, only material things. Still have the memories.

I usually would toss a note into peoples' mailboxes. Even to this day I sometimes do. All too often I wouldn't have pen and/or paper though. Used to have some little business cards made up to leave. On one side I had made up a nice graphic saying "This must be your LUCKY DAY! You MISSED me!", then on the other side the days of the week and a time indicator to say what day/date and time I was there. Was really handy. Should print some more, although I seldom use them since gas prices went up, I don't chance things too often. More often I'll call to see if they're home.

I had on on the door of the trailer I just sold, at the river. I'm sure it's packed up somewhere.

My 95 year old next door neighbor still has one on her back door! We use it because she's often out and about when we go over to drop something off for her . . . she's such a sweetheart; I hope I have at least SOME of her energy if I ever make it to 95 :)

Leave a note...That will remind us... My dad had one at the back door for years.

I remember them but wouldn't want one. It is an open invitaion for someone undisirable to know you're not home.

Yup, sadly it's not the good old days anymore and some crack head around here would spot that and either realize we weren't home or would rip it off the wall and sell it for two bucks on the corner...

Yep. I remember those. These were common among farm folks, and less common in towns. Most of these 'leave a note' appliances were found on homes that did not have telephones. Walking was common, and if you walked past a neightbor place that was 1 mile from your house, often one would stop to say hello then proceed on your journey.

Times have changed. Today, I would hesitate to use the note box because I would not want to be accused of 'messin' with their property or upset them becasue a note would be proof that someone had been there in their absence. However, leaving a note would be proper if you had stopped by to perform a service and they were not in, or you needed to contact them for some reason.

Usually, these note boxes were placed outside the entryway door and under the protection of a porch roof. It was necessary to protect this box from the elements. People who did not have covered entryways did not bother with these boxes since the paper wouls be ruined by driving rain.

My grandmother's still hangs on her front door even though she's been gone since '97. My dad and uncle co-own the old homeplace now. A few years back, DH and I were in the area over a long weekend and went by hoping my uncle would be there. He wasn't, but I did leave a note in the box. I had never noticed the box before ....... all those years of sitting on that porch as a kid and never noticed it.

I live in an APT house and one of my neighbors has something like it on her door, but it is made out of a blue-jean back pocket. The pocket was cut with a little of the fabric left around it , then has an eyelet lace bourder. A cute flower application (probably) ironed on. In the pocket is asmall note pad and pen.It is hung with a ribbon. Dottie
