I agree with you. He should at least call the dentist and tell him he is concerned about pain etc. I also agree that if he (your friend) won't call, have a family member call or you call. I know the dentist cannot talk about the person, but maybe he or his staff will call him (your friend)

I thought compassion was the whole point of the original post. Enjoyingspring is concerned about her friend's health and his discomfort, and is trying to convince him to seek help. Sounds compassionate to me.

DH had an upper denture placed and was told to wear them immediately. He wore them for most of the first day, but finally gave in to the pain and removed them. Wore them for a part of the day for the first week and was finally able to wear them all day at the end of the week. When he went back to see the dentist at the next appointment they asked him how long he had worn the dentures the first day. He told them and they said that was pretty good and that most people didn't last more than a couple of hours.

Basically, even though they "tell" you to wear them, they don't really "expect" you to wear them full-time right off the bat.

While he will need to go in for a re-line in 3 months, he may need some adjustment before then. There may be small burrs that need sanding down and it is silly for him to suffer for 3 months with them. DH's dentist told him that if he wanted to, he could sand tiny burrs he might find himself and gave him some very fine sandpaper to do it with. I'm not advising that he should make major changes to his plate, but he might consider doing this.

But if he's not comfortable doing that, by all means, he should make an appointment with his dentist. After all, dentures (even if insurance covers a good amount of the cost) are not cheap and he deserves to be as pain-free as possible.

Sigh. Concernment.

If your dentist is not compassionate and either refuses to help you and wont see you get a second opinion there are a lot of bad ddentists out there. He needs to wok with the denture wearer. Sure he wants him to come back for a reline (around $900.00 up)

Any time I have had problems with new dentures, I go back immediately so that they can see exactly where the problem is. I have always been encouraged to come back and get an appointment the same day I call and have never been charged for adjustments.

He needs to show up at the dentist office and tell him how painful the lower denture is.
When I got mine, I cried trying to put them in and it hurt so bad and co-workers said to expect that so I tried for a couple of days and couldn't wear them due to the pain. I went to the dentist, didn't call just showed up, and told them the problem and they took me right in and the dentist told me I should have come back as soon as I noticed the problem.

Thanks for all your responses. I don't understand why he is afraid to go back and have this problem solved. I realize that lower dentures are very difficult to get used to but you have to keep going back to the dentist until lhe make it right.

My concern is that he is not eating properly because of this.

I had my uppers pulled due to an accident in my 20's. The denture was put in immediately and was told not to take it out except to clean them and to rinse my mouth with peroxide. If it hurts because of rubbing a sore spot I would call the dentist but if it hurt because of the tenderness over all I would eat soft food.

When I had mine pulled and replaced with the dentures immediately-I was instructed once I got home, to take them out and quickly rinse my mouth with warm salt water & put the dentures right back in so the swelling wouldn't prevent them from being inserted. Dr suggested a soft diet for a week and after one week-call to come in for any sore spots...I was allowed 10 post visits for any corrections with the price of the dentures. If one isn't given those follow up visits? I'd quickly find another dentist.

Definite;y call the dentist and ask what to do. Pain is always a bad sign.

I got mine in dec. and they said any pain come back....I am still having trouble with the lower ones!! Alot of trouble mainly trying to eat with them...but now they are rubbing a sore spot on my tongue was going to go back today but helping a friend by babysitting for her so just not wearing them and will go in tomorrow! grinch hate to tell you this but bottoms just lay in there where uppers have a ridge that holds them in place. I have to pull hard to break the vacuum on my uppers to get them out. If you are like my husband was....you will always have a problem with them. My husband had 3 posts implanted and then they stayed in place. that is the way to go if you can afford it.

Your welcome, glad my post helped. When my husband had it done he was really scared, especially when they started to cover his face. He was claustrophobic. When it was over someone came to take me back to him. I managed to stifle my laugh when I saw him. His cheeks were full of cotton and he had the biggest grin on his face. As it turned it was not as bad as he expected.
