Craftsman??

I thought that also, but I always thought craftsman houses had built-ins and distinctive windows? This is my first old house so I'm not very knowledgeable.

We have to get into primary and secondary influences when one bold stroke of design is not in evidence.
1)Plain/vernacular; built in the style of the people, by an owner/builder without aid of an architect. This probably is a typical form for your area and era.
2)Bungalow; this is as much a byproduct of the construction date as a conscious choice, as our design choices are always advised by the zeitgeist.The large front porch and tapered posts are bungaloid, the gable shingling is a nod to the earlier Victorian tradition.

If it is a rural home, and heat was from wood, that would explain the need for fireplace in each room. The exterior certainly looks bungalow-ish, esp the front porch has a Craftsman look. It is possible it was built for someone who did not have money for the interior woodwork but needed the rooms.

It is a very nice brick home.

I spent a few months researching the style of my house before deciding that its style was "middle class bungalow with a variety of design elements from multiple styles that appealed to the owners." That's similar to how posters on the Building a Home forum talk about their choices: they like Style A generally, but they also like Element B, C, and D, and they live in X place, so they need to make Adaptation Y. When I was researching styles, I was struck by the variety of definitions for specific styles (even very different definitions of "bungalow"!) and the definitiveness with which various authors spoke even though they were all saying different things! That's part of what led me to suspect that the formal classification system of home styles largely emerged after most of these homes were built.

I love the boldness of the columns in front of your house. I hope that you're all moved in and loving your new home!

Thank you all so much for the information. :) I don't think there were any built-ins as I've seen no evidence anywhere. The original owners removed a pair of doors between the parlor and what we call the living room and those doors are still in the basement as is any hardware they changed out over the years. So I think they would have left the built-ins if there were any. Also they raised 4 children to adulthood and lost a young daughter in the house so I'm sure they needed every bit of space they had! I've posted a few pics of the interior. If anyone is interested I can post more later.

I kind of thought it was a bungalow/craftsmen. Thanks for helping me clear that up. I want to know as much as I can about the house, because this is my forever house. The gypsy has found her home at last! lol I love this house and am immensely enjoying learning her mysteries.

I've posted a pic of a little white building we call the school house (original owner was a teacher and there is rumor that she held school there.)However, I wonder if it was a summer kitchen. It too has its own brick chimney with flue.

My bet is that the white building was a canning and "summer" kitchen. It could make a nice craft studio and retreat, or you could get into canning.

It's a great example of a modestly detailed cross-gabled Craftsman. The use of brick is less common than wood siding.

The term "bungalow" can be used to describe any modest low-roofed small house.
