Do you listen to your muffins?

I just read about this and it tickled me. Apparently, you can tell if your muffins are done by sticking your ear right smack dab on the oven door (kidding. Near it would probably be the better route.) If they're not finished yet, you'll hear a faint popping sound from the liquid evaporating. Not even sure if this is true, just thought it was cute.

My grandmother used to say a cake was done when she could hear it "sing."

This post made me smile because I have a lot of bakeware too. Cookie sheets and muffin pans go into a 12" wide base cab along with cutting boards: Most of my bakeware goes into the 36" wide base cab with pullouts at the far left side of this photo: And my serveware (including square/rectangular baking pans, lasagna pans, etc) goes into the cabinets above and below the MW: Also FWIW, I put in a baking center at the end of the island closest to the range (it doesn't really show in these pix) -- it's just a base cab lowered 4" to provide a comfortable height for rolling out dough and such. It's wonderful for a hardcore baker!

It looks great but I caution you against 6 skinny posts. Porch posts should not be closer together than the height of the posts. 5 posts would only work if you got rid of the useless front door. 4 posts would be good too but I would make them at least 6" square (not round). That even aligns better with the front door than what the designer drew which would be obvious if the designer hadn't moved the door over in the computer model. (I wouldn't be moving useless doors if I had a tight budget.) It also allows wider front steps. Front steps should always be wide and welcoming with room for a plant or two. If the center dormer is made wider perhaps the roof of it could continue down to the main roof forming a gable-front dormer. Not much more expensive (maybe less expensive) but possibly a lot more elegant.

Well, to answer the question, I listen to books through the Talking Books program that is run by the US Library of Congress National Library Service. I do all of my "reading" this way and have done so for the last 25 years. I'm very used to books on tape. Soon they will be converting to a digital format. Of course, being this kind of reader means that I don't often get to take part in discussions of books on boards like this one. I can't just order up a book from the library and expect to get it in time for the discussion. Sometimes I wait many years for a requested book. Just the other day I got one I'd requested 12 years ago, for instance. On the other hand, I get to keep the books for up to a year. I know of no other library with such a generous policy. Back in my student days, we often had to get library books for 24 hours only--and race back with them to avoid stiff fines.

Usually I switch between the public radio station and a local mostly "news" station which is unfortunately becoming more talk than news and info. But lately it's just too much political rhetoric that I wind up changing stations and when they're both polluted it goes off. There's a CD player in there but I don't use it. I usually have things on my mind and wind up making notes (on my digital recorder) so I don't forget. Only about a month until the election is over but then it's going to be too much holiday stuff on there. So, probably not listening to much. Have to rely on conversation when someone is with me. That can sometimes be tricky... :)

I remember one of the Ma & Pa Kettle movies where Pa accidentally spilled some popcorn into the pancake batter Ma was making for breakfast. Those pancakes popped when they were ready!

Or your muffins have an internal temperature of 210-degrees F when tested with an instant read thermometer - la la la, me me me, do re me fa so la ti doooooooooo - sang the thermometer.

I will have to listen more carefully next time. When my son was six, his class made a cookbook. They wrote out their favorite recipes. One little boy wrote that you know when to flip the pancakes when they start saying "puh, puh, puh," and you know what? He was right.
