flooring mystery

Our house is 126 years old. The entire house was remodeled and built onto in the 1940's.We don't know if the flooring was replaced or just refinished, but it looks to be in pretty good shape from underneath albeit very old and weathered. The kitchen has at least 6 layers of flooring. We could see that from the edge of the basement landing. From lifting the carpet around the floor vents in the living room the wood looks just beautiful...we think it is 6 inch pine planks. But across the room at the foot of the stairs the wood is 2 inch planks in bad shape...we know because we had to lift the carpet there and replace a couple of boards. The master bedroom also has the same 6" planks but is covered in glue under the existing carpet...must have had some linoleum down at one time.

The biggest obstacle to removing all the built up flooring and carpet to reveal the wood floors is not knowing what we will find. We can feel humps and bumps under the carpet, but when we look at it from below in the basement we cannot see any uneven areas, which leads us to believe there is a layer on top of the original floor that is causing the uneven floor.

Our fear is removing the carpeting (which the previous owners had installed just before we bought the house..so it is new) and finding a much bigger problem than we first thought, then running out of funds to fix it properly, or have the expense of reinstalling the carpet (which I hate!).

What are we likely to find under all the existing floor coverings? What is the worst case scenario?
