Julia Child in NY Times

Julia Child would turn 100 on Wednesday. Her influence is covered in tomorrow's edition of the NY Times. Discuss?

I miss her.....but sometimes come across some of her shows on PBS. NOW those were cooking shows!

helpmefind.com lists Dame de Coeur as 3-4 ft tall and Julia Child as 2-3 ft tall. Even if roses tend to grow taller than stated in your region, I think the chances are that Dame de Coeur will still probably be a foot taller than Julia Child. Nice combo--strong contrast in colors. Ah, Julia. It is like Iceberg here. It is disease resistant for some people and not for others. It wasn't for me, but it was a pretty thing. Not a great fragrance, not good as a cut flower. Sunsprite is another that is sometimes resistant. You might try one of the "Fairy Tale" series from Kordes, the two that I have are totally clean and have not been treated for blackspot all season. Golden Fairy Tale looks nice.

Some background on the variety Julia Child. Gary Ibsen at Tomatofest asked me if I had a great tomato variety that I hadn't distributed seed for that he could name and offer in honor of Julia Child. But he wanted exclusive rights to it. It turns out I did have a great variety at the time, but I don't give exclusive rights to anyone. At the time the variety had been called Perry's Teasum b'c I'd been teasing folks here at GW with how great it was but just couldn't get enough seeds, thanks to the deer, to list in the SSE Yearbook or to distribute here, when I used to do my seed offers here. When I had enough seeds I decided to share with others what goes into naming a variety and started a thread here and gave all the background information I had about the variety and 22 folks posted in that thread and I sent seeds to all of them as a thank you. The name that we came up with was Neves Azorean Red, which indeed has become a very popular variety. I don't know what variety Gary ended up with that he named Julia Child. Carolyn

I am zone 9 - very hot dry summers. JC never got over 3 feet for me - had her about 6 years. I just moved and have been rose shopping. I went to nursery last year in our record breaking hot spell - over 105 - the only roses blooming in their black containers were Doris Day. All of them were blooming - so thats the yellow rose for me.

Her transplanted kitchen is re-opening at the Smithsonian (National Museum of National History) in DC. There's an article in today's Food section in the Washington Post.

I take every opportunity to watch any of her TV shows that are aired. You would think that PBS or the Food Network would do that this week.

I always give her book, The Way to Cook, at bridal showers. It gets a luke warm reception when given but years later I'm told it's the best cookbook they ever received.

Like Chase, when I find one of her old shows I try to watch. I remember as a young girl how funny her voice sounded to me.

Besides her birthday, she's in the media for another reason now. I'll link a thread from over on the Appliances Forum about how Thermador is trying to capitalize on her image despite the fact that JC *never* endorsed any product. Pretty dirty thing to do if you ask me!

Interesting thread. I hadn't seen it in the news and I haven't been to Appliances much lately. I'm not about to jump into that thread, but here's my take on it: Yeah, it's a pretty low and disrespectful thing to do especially considering JC's view on endorsing products, but I'd be surprised if it'll really translate to much backlash - in particular much lasting backlash - against the brand beyond the likes of people who hang out on the Appliance Forum. This isn't the presidential election - the competitors won't place negative ads because of it, and it won't be headline news for long. It'll be all but forgotten. That's my prediction, anyway.

One thing that makes this somewhat unique is that it's not a fight about money. The foundation doesn't want money, they just don't want her likeness used. It'll be interesting to watch.
