Ducher through the year
Comments (34)Thanks, jovi, for answering my newbie question. Sometimes the photos on the gallery do not look like the blooms of the same plant I have in my garden. I thought I had received an incorrect plant, but now with your answer, it may be that the blooms are at different stages and I'd just never noticed. Thanks for the clarification. You've saved me a lot of heart ache :)...See MoreDoes anyone grow Gloire Lyonnaise?
Comments (8)There is ALWAYS a possibility of misidentification, on just about every old rose - particularly old FOUND roses. We have three roses that have been IDd as Gloire Lyonnaise growing near one another in the cemetery, and nobody has ever suggested that they are mis-IDd, but who knows. There is also, ALWAYS, a possibility that what is sold today is not the original Gloire Lyonnaise, or that more than one cultivar is sold under that name. Identifying a rose definitely is hard to do. The old descriptions of chrome-yellow centers that I find on HMF do not apply. However, our roses are not really pink-tinted, either. The pinkish buds open to a creamy white, just like many of the photos on HMF. I have observed that many 19th century descriptions overstate just how yellow a rose it - until Pernet-Ducher produced truly yellow roses, there was a lot of exaggeration. I saw in one of the references that this rose doesn't repeat in the East. It does for us. Anita...See MoreJulia Child, Living Easy, and Lady Hillingdon
Comments (14)I got rid of Living Easy. The blooms were boring and not fragrant, plus LE died almost to the ground every winter. Winter kill should not be an issue in zone 8, but it was for this rose. I've put up with a couple of boring and not fragrant roses because they make up with it with sheer floriferousness, but LE never did just burst into bloom. Eureka on the other hand is a showstopper with nonstop blooms. Not much fragrance, not showy blooms, and 0 disease resistance so don't go in that direction unless you want to spray. Lady Hillingdon is more of an apricot. The blooms are very nice and clean smelling. Size wise, mine is only 2.5 years old, but while most of my roses are monsters already this one is maybe 6 or 7 feet but only 4 feet wide. The blooms don't last very long in the heat, but it's still worth it for the fragrance. As far as disease resistance, well, it's better than most roses but that isn't saying a lot. It did defoliate some this summer when I stopped spraying for a while, just not nearly as much as most of the other roses. I've heard great things about Julia Child and I've heard them from people who know their roses. But I don't have personal experience with her. If you don't already have it, Etoile de Lyon is a great rose with decent disease resistance. It's a creamy yellow. But it's one of those teas that get big with time and mine is already pretty wide even though it's not all that tall. It always looks good and usually has enough blooms to keep you happy. Charlotte is a yellow Austin that is a monster, but there are always some of those good smelling Austin blooms on her. If you are looking for a rose that is 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide and big and beautiful in an arching sort of way, then this one is great. Disease resistance is OK....See MoreWhich of Julia Child's books are must-haves?
Comments (15)I own or have owned and given away, just about all of Julia's books. My favorites are Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volumes I and II, for detailed, teach you technique and move you forward to a great result (in most cases.) Recipes vary in time and complexity. A seminal work in its own right. The French Chef Cookbook has very easy, approachable recipes, to get most folks going, unless you have fancy, other than just really good, expectations. The Way to Cook is very nice and a good overall book to have (though not to my mind capturing the best essence of Julia.) Perhaps I need to try more recipes in this one. Most of her later books are akin to children after the age they have been "socialized" and are delivering forth what they are supposed to in the best way they know how, and doing so in a most competent manner. I have pretty much given these away, though given more space than I have as well as several servants, which I also am deeply void of, I would have kept them all....See MoreUser
