Ok, so my husband is going to die. I've been searching for a coffee table forever. Just haven't found one I loved, OR could afford. Even recieved gift cert to a furniture store for Christmas, and still couldn't commit to one.

So, a friend made me hit some flea markets with her today. I'll admit..haven't been to one since my mother used to drag me to antique stores, and flea markets as a kid.

We had a BLAST!!!!!

bought this table. I'm sure it doesn't work in the space, lol. But, I love it!!! Needs to be shortened, as it's about 4 inches taller then my old one (which was just horrid!!)

and the legs will have to be painted. Sent a pic to DH "hmm..paint chipping a bit?" hahaha! Paid $80

these silly baskets were only $10 for both. And I realize now that I have nowhere to put them, lol. Oh well!

and my cow purse :) I think it was $15? I decided it was WAY too big and was putting it back, when my friend told me that Oprah said carrying a big purse makes your butt look smaller,,,SOLD!!!! :)

I'm sooo jealous, especially for the roof vent turbine. I have a galvanized pole just waiting for one, but I'm not going to buy it new. I really wish my hubby would be back interested in thrifting! He lost interest in what was once a common hobby for us. I am an antiquer/thrift/side of the road/yardsale a holic! Everything in our very packed home is from a place such as this. We have very few modern items (modern dishwasher and a few small appliances) - everything else we own is old. I have a small hi-fi to play my records which I collect. The only new pieces of furniture we have are a bed, and some Ikea cabinets with glass fronts because we need narrow places (Small house) to showcase all our treasures. One of my addictions is 50's wire furniture. I love 50's iron porch furniture and my friend is holding her entire original collection for me. I have a glass table and 5 chairs to be repainted and to go outside (it's from the 60's), and my hubby wants a glider. A few weeks ago we finally found a 2nd glass front mini-hutch for the basement. I was so pleased. Small open space for a small TV, glass up top for displaying my crazy beloved things, and hidden space below I plan to use to hide canning things and some blankets for the daybeds down there. I'm also proud (and ashamed for having so much stuff) that I re-did the guest house for less than $100. Redecorated the entire thing - just bought some paint, spray paint and some curtain rods! It looks totally different and I could use horded stuff. I've been making new curtains from saved fabric, spray painted all the furniture (I tend to buy stuff for the shape, and not for the condition), did some simple reupholstery, dug out frames and pictures/posters. It is so fun in there now! EVERY single item in that house is 2nd hand! I always look for garden items. Love vintage planters, wire plant stands, old tubs and other types of galvanized stuff.

I love fleamarkets and yard sales! Earlier this spring I trash picked an old wooden chair with a broken cane seat. I put a galvanized bucket into the seat frame where the cane originally was and filled the bucket with nasturtiums (I drilled drainage holes in the bottom of the bucket). It looked really cute, and I was looking forward to the nasturtiums climbing all over the chair back. Unfortunately, I didn't consider the fact that the chair was largely veneer rather than solid wood. The whole thing fell apart during a few weeks of rainy weather. I picked this up at a yard sale last weekend along with a nice strawberry jar and a cool frog for the garden: Behind the birdbath you can see the old iron gate I picked up for my potager. Also, you can see one of the pair of huge, handmade Italian terra cotta pots I got on Craigslist for a song (something about the perspective of the photo makes it looks small, but they are really huge). I just read in Fine Gardening a tip from someone saying they collect old crystal doorknobs and insert them in the top of bamboo poles to decorate their stakes. Sounds great. Ah, Kitchensusie. That rug is really amazing, isn't it? And it looks better IRL. I don't know why the rug store woman didn't show it to me as it's exactly the colors I was looking for. (I just happened to see the border sticking out of a pile of samples and swooned.) I have been toying with getting that rug for the livingroom since the colors look so much better in the livingroom than in our entry, but I worry that the overall pattern might be too busy. Plus that would be yet another room with a different kind of rug. I don't have much info for you except that it's a Tibetan hand-knotted rug. That particular sample is wool and silk, and 100 knots at a whopping $150 per sf. ft. It's also available without silk, 100 knots ($121 sq. ft.) or 80 knots ($96 sq ft). I think my designer is "offering" a 20% discount. It is considered custom. If you order those colors exactly, it will take four months, regardless of the size--unless there's an uprising. (An exact quote from the rug store lady.) If you tweak the colors, it will be a six month wait. Duh! I just read the label. It says something about a joint venture between Nepal Carpet Enterprises and Noreen Seabrook Marketing. There are lots of numbers: PO#: SP-011906-S Rug #: 1646-J-5976 Design & Color: 0438/Windsor Blue Quality: STANA Design Name: RANI TARA Woven with: Tibetan wool & C/silk If you happen to find it elsewhere, I'd be very interested in knowing what you find, especially if the prices are lower. (I have found prices much lower than the design center so part of me hesitant.) The thing about rug hunts is that the longer you do it, the more you end up spending. Like buying a house.

You will LOVE having a big coffee table! If it's comfy when you sit at your sofa, then don't shorten it.

I have a big coffee table too, the dog chewed three corners off when she was a pup, and there is no way I'll ever replace it. It's become my "desk" in the mornings when I pay bills, drink coffee, read mail, etc!

Those baskets are neat. You can decorate the inside of them like you would a "decorative" birdcage.

I'm a big purse person also, just because I carry so much junk!

I love your new stuff, and sounds like you had fun to boot. The table would be perfect in a shabby chic room- no painting needed. Is it higher than the sofa seat? If so, could it be a tea table? They are easier on the back.

I'll take the baskets if you don't want them :) They look very Asian. Would go great with the stuff in my LR, LOL.

I'm pleased to announce that dh loved the table. Finds it very sturdy, which was what he was most concerned about. Actually, it's really quite heavy. I'm wondering if it was a farm table or something, cut down? It was at an antique store. But, I know that doesn't mean much.
And when I asked dh about painting, he said the distressed is "part of the charm", and to leave it. Of course, he's right. But, he's not often drawn to such stuff.
We are trying to move away from the matchy, matchy show room floor look :) So, guess it's a good start!!
And he also likes the height of the table as is. It's growing on me, as well.

He made no comment about the baskets, just grinned. Hated the purse, and told me my butt was fine without it, hehehe.

Geeeze....this is exactly what we've been looking for; coffee table with painted legs, stained top, and a bit rustic-looking.
I'll just take yours!

In fact, if you decide you don't care for the table and cages, I'll gladly take them off your hands.

I like the table too, even though I'm not a fan of peeling paint, I *love* the barn board top. Can we see the rest of the room?

I would have bought the baskets too - that's why I have a set of 3 (not the same as yours) sitting in the attic waiting for me to find a place LOL! Can't say I like the purse, but then again I don't carry a purse of any kind (billfold in back pocket) so my opinion doesn't count...

Would the baskets work as an end table? One stacked on the other with a wood or glass topping.

For what it's worth, my coffee table is 17" high. It's between the sofa, 16", & two chairs, 16 1/2". I think there is not a magic height for coffee tables. :)

Alright, alright..stop hatin' on the purse y'all :) :)
My mother tells me it's "quite fashionable", lol. Maybe that should be my first sign to run..not walk away from it :)

I'll put some more pics up of the whole space. I'm needing some help pulling some other things together to make this table work. I've been ready and quite willing for awhile to make a change. And this has helped set me on that path.

Kathleen, great idea about using them as an end table. I'll be needing something, once I get rid of some of the other stuff I have. I may have a spot. Although, they're not quite as big in person as they appear in the pic.

Thanks again everyone! So far, I've yet to have any buyer's remorse :)

On that table...it's gorgeous, don't paint it, it will lose it's charm! But do rub it down with a very fine grit steel wool to remove any loose paint and then wax it to give it a nice finish and protect the paint that's left. And then put it in a big box and mail it to me :oP It would be perfect for my family room!
