Pioneer Wine Trail

After I left Sherry's house on Friday, I thought I might not have to eat for a week. I was wrong. (grin)

Saturday morning was spent at a birthday party for Elery's granddaughter, who just turned 5. I ate very lightly, in spite of the sausage/potato/cheese casserole, the chicken salad on croissants, the cream cheese swirled brownies....well, OK, not so light.

The afternoon was spent on the "wine trail". Several local vineyards and wineries participated, calling in local chefs and pairing wine with the food the chef chose to serve.

The first winery is called Aeronautique, because it's inside an old airplane hangar. they have a lovely gazebo so you can sit outside with your glass of wine, and the winery is surrounded by lovely homes, each with their own private hangar for their small planes:

their chef chose to serve seared tuna skewers with a side of spicy asian coleslaw with a ginger dressing:

their paried it with my least favorite wine of the day, a cabernet franc that made the inside of my mouth pucker! Elery said it was very astringent, and he drank both his portion and mine:

They also let us go into the storage portion, where they were aging the cabernet in wooden barrels:

From there we went to Sandhill Crane Vineyards, an environmentally certified facility who grows their own grapes:

their food choice was a slice of warm local goat cheese served on a plate of mixed greens and topped with pecans and local cherries soaked in Port, the Port was also made on the premises. The viniagrette on the salad was made with the same wine they served for the pairing, something called a "blush". On my own personal wine scale it "didn't completely suck". LOL

Our third stop was at Lone Oak Vineyard, where they served a rosemary infused prime rib skewer, along with a choice of wines. I chose a semi-dry red, Elery a 2005 Merlot. Elery drank my share again, LOL, but he likes dry red wine.

Lone Oak also had a jazz flautist, a young gentleman named Brandon Marceal, we bought his CD, it was quite nice out on the deck, listening to the music:

Our last stop was Sleeping Bear Winery, who does not grow all their own grapes, but they do source them locally. There we had a fresh summer gazpacho with a glass of something they called "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere". Another glass of dry red for Elery, LOL, but they had free wine tastings of anything else we chose, so I tasted a couple of sweeter whites, along with this:

they had some wine trail t-shirts, which I did not buy, but enjoyed the sentiment...

We were supposed to continue with the remaining 4 vineyards on Sunday, but the 3 ounces or so of wine I drank upset my stomach, I'm a "light weight", LOL. Instead we went in to Ann Arbor, picked up a couple of things at Trader Joe's, bought a whole red snapper for the grill at Whole Paycheck, and went on home.

So, I had a real whirlwind weekend, trying hard to steer clear of the million gallons of oil spilled into the Kalamazoo River via the ruptured pipeline going to Canada. (sigh) I wouldn't want to get in the way of the mostly absent federal clean up effort. Ahem.
