HAVE: Challenge: Paph. Black Buddha x Kevin's Wine

This plant is somewhat of a rescue project. I'll try to post pictures tonight of the plant and flower. This was a really nice plant until the dog got hold of it (in bloom, so she ripped up the flower too!). What remains is 1 large rooted 'parent' fan, and 1 new lead/fan as a separate piece. The baby should be capable of growing roots, it just hasn't yet, the parent is sulking. I'm pretty sure that the parent has some roots, but I'd have to check to be sure. It came from EOoM a couple of years ago and blooms during the winter. It should be fine once the sulking is over, but I just don't have the patience to wait for that to happen. The flower is actually quite large and a burgundy red/maroon color. Nice.

So this is free for postage and a story. Hmmm, I love my dog (most of the time), so lets hear some animal stories, or wine stories since wine is part of this plant's parentage.

I love my dog too, so much that my screen name is his..Cutterpup. Cutter is fine around plants, so any paph would be safe with him. his claim to fame though is his coat. he is a lab/welsh corgi cross and has a long, corgi double coat that is the color of a yellow lab. His coat is so famous that it is the lining of choice for the local bird nests. He lies still for the carolina wrens to pluck his fur but the other day he suddenly rushed to the door to be let in. Flying away was a hugh mockingbird with a beak full of fur. After a trauma like that I had gave him hugs and milkbones while I drank a glass of wine to calm his nerves.
In all seriousness, I love paphs and would love to nurse either parent or baby back to their glory.

Whitecat, In keeping with the title of this thread, I killed my first three phals and most of an oncidium--then I received a phal as a gift, and for 3 years it refused to die, grew and bloomed despite neglect--then I decided I should learn more about orchids, and take better care of it...needless to say I nearly killed it, over fertilized I think, burned the roots right off, three pairs of leaves got all limp and wrinkled I kept it that way for about 6 months before I got the nerve to repot (from tight sphagnum moss to a bark mix) would you believe it perked right up, two months later the leaves are firm and upright, there are several new roots and two spikes that are about 6-8 inches long... Now I have 20 orchids scattered around my living room, half are phals, one phrag, three onc, 2 catts, a vanda, a paph a zygo and a tolumnia. I've rebloomed most of the phals and the phrag, most of the others I've had less than a year, so we'll have to wait and see. I'm putting together an order for some seedlings from Byrd's... nick

As I browse through this thread, I seem to notice that we are letting vendors off the hook a bit. Even though some have received virused orchids from a known vendor, they allow that vendor to refund (just the problem plants) and they continue to purchase from them??? Seems if we really want to stop the problem, we stop buying from vendors that sell virused orchids. Instead of me having to spend $5 to test every new plant, why not have the vendor do the test and then pass the $5 (I'm sure they will get tests for cheaper considering they may need to buy 1000's) cost on to me once he finds a non-virused plant to send? He may have to raise prices to compensate for testing and loss of stock, but if it wasn't a huge increase, I'd be willing to pay more from a known testing vendor. It seems if we keep putting the emphasis on the end-user, the supplier gets off the hook a bit and keeps doing it until it starts to eat into profits. Of the 1000's of orchids sold by the vendors mentioned above, just how many end users tested to see if their plant was virused, I bet less than 10%? So, the vendor has sold known virused plants to a 100Ã¢ÂÂs but only a couple of people who tested called them on it, they refund your $20 or so, but yet there are hundreds of others virused ones that now sit in collections. If I was a vendor and I only had to refund >10% of what is probably a 100% virused batch, jeez hard not to follow the almighty dollar on that one? But, if we turned around and never bought from that vendor again (until they cleaned up their act) and told our friends through societies and forums about the issue, things would probably change quickly. Sadly, depending on the extent of problems it may put some growers/sellers over the financial edge. I'd be willing to take the financial hit myself if I knew the vendor would clean-up their act accordingly, but when he only has to refund less than 10% of the problem, he's doing pretty well by continuing on the road he is travelling. Maybe there should be an accreditation about being virus free? Could be done via the AOS, but then they pretty much seem to condone or turn a blind eye to the Asian problems. viper75, I see you are doing avocados in Livermore. Those hardier Mexican varieties should easily survive your winters, as some of your other fruit trees and shrubs are not even that hardy. Mexicola tolerates at least 20f, which is like a once in a lifetime cold snap. The bigger challenge is the soil and heat. Also, if your cherries are not prolific, then that's a good sign that you microclimate isn't getting a ton of chill hours, which would bode well for the avos. When I was growing up in Walnut Creek, we had tons of cherries and stone fruit, benefiting somewhat from a dry creek bed behind our property that would funnel in cold air in the winter. After my parents moved to a property less than a mile away with some elevation, they had almost no frost anymore, and the stone fruit and cherries don't produce like they did at the other property. However, they can grow more tender things much better. Sounds like you might be in a similar spot which is probably pretty good all-around for a lot of different types of plants. Would love to see some pictures of your subtropical fruit trees.

Hiya i got a puppy, named Pandora, she is a variegated lol I mean brindled boston terrier. So far she has not got into my plants, but not for lack of trying, lol. I have a trailing ivy that is suspended by a hook on my ceiling, and I caught her yesterday making running leaps at. Then she would fall short, oh by five feet or so! So i think I will never have a problem with her reaching it! If I could get the baby, I know I could bring it back to life and beauty!

ok, i don't have a dog story, but i've got a few cat tales...
when i first started growing orchids, i had two phals and a dend. i thought they were doing great(they weren't). well i had them a wobbly little red table right in front of the window. i had a little gray kitty who always jumped up on this table to the window sill, but regardless of this, i though this was just a fabulous spot for them. one day i went out of town for a week. i came home to the biggest mess ever. to my horror, the cat had knocked the entire table over and proceeded to have a ball playing with my uprooted plants for the entire week i was gone. needless to say all the orchids and the other plants on the table died. somehow i got over my sadness and bought more orchids. which i proceeded to kill as well, before i finally got the hang of things. i also had the neighbor's cat pee on a cute little catt(lol) which died also. this all taught me one thing...orchids and cats(well, playful ones, at least) don't mix!!!

I rescued my first orchid when our Yorkie, Baby, was a year old. She had already proven herself to be a wonderful gardening buddy. Baby would pull & dig dandylions out of the area we were turning into yard and garden. The poor phal was barely alive, looked like it would croak with wrong look. Baby couldn't resist, sneaking up, sniffing, then giving each of the 2 withered leaves a little kiss when it came home. Then looking up at mommy and doing her little "I fixed it" dance. She still helps me with all my plants, keeping an eye on me, sniffing flowers, kissing sickly plants, and never ever trying to eat or injur one. :) Needless to say that was over 4 years ago, the phal survived blooms every year and produced keikeis-several of them and they all just finished blooming & one is starting another keikei!

Hmmmm...I've never heard of a Yorkie plant doctor.

Great stories! But it doesn't have to be just cats and dogs, all animal stories qualify.

I needed help to make the decision, so it went to a house vote. The cats (2) were bored (as cats will be), and abstained. The dogs (2) held a secret vote, so I don't know who voted for which story. So I enlisted DH to help make the decision.

We think that this plant needs Baby's special gift, so J'Lynn - I'll send you an email because I'll need your address.
