smoked beef brisket

I have a 2 1/2 lb. beef brisket flat that I want to smoke over indirect heat on the BBQ. Can anyone give me advise on how to do it. For instance, how long? Should I bring it to room temperature before I put it on the BBQ? Anyone have a good rub they want to share? I'd really appreciate all the advice I can get.
